The Salvation Army Sydney East &Illawarra Division A Pastoral Word Newsletter No.07 06 March 2013 LAUNCH OF SELF DENIAL APPEAL Greetings, This past Sunday the 4th March, was the launch of the Self Denial Appeal for 2013.The theme for this year’s Appeal is “Local Corps Global Mission”, based on Isaiah 61. Over the next five weeks, with the Altar Service being held on the 7th April, the DVD series will show some amazing stories from Greece, Taiwan, Malawi and Estonia. Next Sunday, week two in the series, will be of particular interest to those who have experienced the 'Footsteps of St Paul' journey. Captains Polis Pantelidis and Maria Konti-Galinou who started up the work of the Salvation Army in Greece will be featured. Meeting them in their quarters was one of the high lights for many of us on this journey. After sharing a meal with them we spent time listening to their story and the work they were undertaking in Greece. Just before we left them we experienced a very special moment as Polis and Maria stood under the Army flag and we had the opportunity to pray for them and for their work in Greece. I urge you to use the DVDs provided, to challenge your people and to give them a window into the great need that exists around our global missions. Encourage them to use the personal study booklet, teach the young people from the material and DVDs provided and do all that you possibly can to encourage sacrificial giving. As you challenge your people to give sacrificially I would challenge you to enter into this time of Self Denial yourself by setting the lead through your own personal sacrificial giving to the Appeal. 'The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, Because the Lord has anointed me He has sent me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, To proclaim freedom for the captives and Release them from darkness.' Isaiah 61:1 Thank you for all you are doing in the Name of Christ. May God bless you. Peter and Jan Laws

LAUNCH OF SELF DENIAL APPEAL

Greetings,

This past Sunday the 4th March, was the launch of the Self Denial Appeal for 2013.The theme for this year’s Appeal is “Local Corps Global Mission”, based on Isaiah 61.

'The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me,

Because the Lord has anointed me He has sent me to bring good news to the poor.

He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, To proclaim freedom for the captives and

Release them from darkness.' Isaiah 61:1

Thank you for all you are doing in the Name of Christ.

May God bless you.

Tarrawanna Youth Group Clean Up

Around The Division

Belmore Corps

On Sunday 3rd March 9 of our youth group along with 4 other members of our corps, and 6 members of the community met together at Corrimal East Beach to join in “Clean Up Australia Day.”

Although the ground was muddy and there was a slight drizzle of rain, the clean-up crew spent the morning picking up litter and other discarded items and put them where they belong - into the bin. We also took down our SAES trailer so that all the hard workers were able to finish off their efforts with a sausage sizzle and a cold drink.

One of our Corps Mission Objectives is to “go out into the community in response to God’s call” and this simple act of participating in community events not only meant that we could meet new people from our community, but we can also be active participants in our community and through action show the love of Christ as well as to demonstrate good stewardship of God’s creation.

Divisional Calendar

Five delegates from the Sydney Korean Corps attended the Territorial Youth Vision Rally 2013 hosted our delegates from Belmore Corps, was also the translator during the Youth Rally.

The Youth Rally was a blessed time for all of us, during which we could share with many officers and young people what is happening in our territory and learn about what is happening in theirs. General Linda Bond addressed the youth at various times throughout the Rally, including sharing the vision of the Salvation Army to the youth.

Celebrating Freedom at Samaritan House

Someone recently told me how much she loves being at Samaritan House. Here, she is finding freedom from violence, homelessness and alcohol abuse.

With her growing health and self awareness, she said that she loves the person she is becoming here - the person she always wanted to be. This lady often has friends ask her why she looks so good, and she proudly says that coming to The Salvation Army has changed her life. She is finding freedom and loving it!

United Nations Commission

THE Salvation Army is playing a full role at the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) which will convene in New York, USA, at the United Nations (UN) Headquarters from 4 to 15 March. Sixteen Salvation Army representatives will be attending the event, including representatives from the four USA territories and personnel from the International Social Justice Commission.

The 'priority theme' of this year’s CSW is the 'Elimination and prevention of all forms of violence against women and girls'. There is also a 'review theme': 'The equal sharing of responsibilities between women and men, including caregiving in the context of HIV/Aids'. There will be opportunity for intervention from non-governmental organisations and other groups from UN member states to voice their thoughts on wording and ideas that should be put into the final outcome document.

The Salvation Army will be hosting a parallel event on 'Violence and the Church: A Salvation Army Perspective', with officers and lay personnel speaking on how The Salvation Army responds to violence and what mechanisms are in place to help in this growing issue. This will be one of around 400 parallel events during the course of the CSW.

The Salvation Army will also host a new event – a 'girls' tribunal'. This will give girls from around the world opportunity to testify about violence they have experienced. For many of the participants, this tribunal will be an opportunity to raise awareness in a safe environment. The hope is that the process will lead to them finding justice back in their home countries. The sitting jurors are highly significant personnel in the international arena.

International Women’s Day, on 8 March, will be acknowledged during the CSW. The theme for this event the year is 'A promise is a promise: Time for action to end violence against women.'

The Salvation Army will take part in devotions during the course of the CSW and will lead one session.
