strong fellowship that people experienced while eating together, and the witness that this was to everyone who saw it or heard about it.

Well, this summer, we are going to be fol-lowing in the footsteps of the early church, by putting on a sum-mer BBQ series on the front lawn of PCLG!

This is just a time to sit out on a lawn chair or a blanket, to take a break from cooking dinner for the night, enjoy a burger and talk with friends. We are purposefully setting up out front, because eating togeth-er in this way is a strong witness to our neighbors and those driving by to the life and joy that we share together.

This is the pattern that we dis-cover in the Bible—that as God’s people, we are meant to be both “inwardly strong” and “outwardly focused”. Consider this BBQ series a chance for you to do both things at once—to grow in relationships with your church family (inward), and also to let our neighbors see what we’re all about, and even invite them to join us (outward).

I look forward to meeting you, greeting you, and eating with you in the months ahead!

Peace, Pastor Dave

Did you know that PCLG has a program that makes it easy and fun to get to know other mem-bers of our church “family”? At Tables of Eight we form groups of eight to ten adults, singles and couples, who agree to share a meal together four times over a six month period. Any adult member of the congregation can join (ages 18 to 108). It’s a great way to meet new people of all ages without committing all of your precious free time. Each group decides when they will meet and what kind of meal they will have: pot lucks,

picnics, pizza at a pizza parlor or whatever. The idea is to meet, eat, laugh, have fun and get to know one another. By meeting four times, we get beyond the “getting-to-know-you” conversations such as “where do you live?”, “how many children?”, “what do you do?”, etc. . . We really get to communicate with each other on a personal level. This is not a family event, although we would like to encourage parents of all ages to attend. This is a chance to interact with other adults. If you’ve participated before, an attempt will be made to group you with people that have not been in your group before. If you participate for a few sessions, you will be surprised how many people you really know when you attend Fellowship in the Social Hall on Sundays! Our next session will be July through December, 2012. We will be taking sign-ups at the coffee hour during the month of June or you can sign up contacting Mary Jane Hum-phrey: (408)963-6005 or [email protected].

What a lovely party it was - it couldn’t have been nicer! Pat Moore and Jo Ann Khoobyarian were assisted by representatives from church fellowship groups in organizing the event. There were 65 ladies present, including Jane’s mother and sister and Steve’s mother. Gifts (paid for by donations from our church family) included a crib and mattress, a stroller, a carseat, a changing table/dresser. There were also many individual gifts: baby blankets, clothes, books, bath accessories, a picture frame, and even a coupon for free baby-sitting! Steve got the hand puppets he had requested so he can “play with the baby”; the nine puppets were used in the table decorations for the day. As far as activities, Steve showed a slide show of his and Jane’s life and adventures together. The luncheon consisted of a variety of salad, breads, tea, coffee, and cake. Angie Smith also prepared fresh floral centerpieces for the tables. Now, as we wait for Baby Fainer to arrive (the gender will be a surprise!), we pray for all God’s blessings for Steve, Jane, and the newest member of their family.

Pastor Dave’s Mother’s Day

sermon, based on Acts 1:1-11?

“You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon

you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and

Samaria, and to the ends of the earth” (Acts 1:8).

We promise that we on the Mission Committee did not request this sermon topic, but we could not have chosen better for a new start. As Dave told us, our “Jerusalem” is Los Gatos and our “Judea” is the South Bay. How better to be witnesses for Jesus than to go out into the community to feed the hungry, house the homeless, support the widow and the orphan? We have ideas in mind and programs in place to help you fulfill your call to be a Christian witness. Contact one of these committee members for more information: Jeff Miller (mission elder), Martha Wills (mission elder), Carlo Panighetti (youth elder), Sue Coates, Martha Beattie, Eric Schroeder, Maria Bangal, Rika Harris and Tony Bayne. Or, better yet: join us on the mission committee! We meet the second Tuesday of the month at 7:00pm.

Sacred Heart Community Service “PCLG day” is always the first Monday of the month from noon to 3 pm. Join us June 4! Need a ride? Call Martha Wills at (408)354-6527.

Sunday, July 8PCLG has joined other Los Gatos faith communities in supporting the construction of four single-family homes on Cleo Avenue and Rainbow Drive, near Highway 85 in Cupertino. We have already donated $3,500 toward materials, and now it’s time to put some muscle into this project! Our first work day is scheduled for Sunday, July 8 (yes, a Sunday), from about 8:30 to about 3:30. We will need 10 construction workers (doing things like finishing framing, applying drywall, etc.) and 5 support workers (providing and serving snacks and meals). More detailed information will be available closer to July 8. Interested but can’t participate July 8? Our second confirmed build date is Saturday, October 6. To sign up email Eric Schroeder [email protected] or Steve Fainer [email protected]. For information on the Cleo Avenue build, visit this website: www.habitatsiliconvalley.org

Wednesday, July 18 Help a child in need get off to a good start this upcoming school year and enjoy dinner in the Redwood Grove in the process! Join your church family for barbeque and ice cream on Wednesday, July 18 and bring a donation of school supplies or a backpack. Donations may also be left in the red bins around the church campus.

Looking for a volunteer activity you can share with your kids? Join us in filling those donated backpacks at CityTeam Ministries in San Jose Saturday, August 4 from 9am-12pm. Community service hours will be awarded.

Deacons are known as the heart of the church—part of the glue that holds our church family together. As a family, we need to take care of and help each other. If you recognize that one of us has a need that isn’t being met, please let one of your Deacons know so we can do our best to help.

Please Note: Our Senior Lunch has been moved to Sunday, October 28th. Please stay tuned for more details!

• Conversation Corner: Look for us at the coffee hour on the fourth Sunday of each month. Do you have a name tag? We can get them for you. Our name tags are an important accessory so our incoming minister can get to know us! We also record birthdays (but not your age) and anniversaries to be recognized in the Spire.

• Drivers: We can never have too many for the “Ride with Me” program. If you feel driven to volunteer, please phone Tony Herz. For driver requests, please allow 48 hours notice whenever possible.

• Cooks: There’s no such thing as too many cooks in the kitchen with our “Caring Cuisine” program. We heartily welcome new volunteers!

• Baskets: Ellen Graff creates our lovely hospital baskets.

• Prayer Shawls: Prayer shawls are often given out in times of strife, grief or illness. If you knit or crochet and are interested in making a prayer shawl, we have yarn and patterns. Please contact Pat Jones.

• Bulletin Board: There is a bulletin board (on wheels) available in the So-cial Hall if you would like to post something. There are certain parameters for posting which are listed on the board.

• Home Communion: Home communion is available if you are unable to get to church. Remind us if we forget to ask you.

HOW TO REACH US:

Need a ride, need a meal, need to talk? The Board of Deacons can help during times of illness, grief or when the demands of daily life become too difficult. We will provide rides, meals or a friendly face to share assistance and personal comfort.

Please call Elder Ev Wilson at 408-268-2679 for immediate response. Mes-sages may be left at the church office at 408-356-6156 ext. 35.

PRAYER REQUESTS:

If you or someone you know needs prayers, please contact Lydia Terrill, Prayer Chain Coordinator at (408)559-3346. You may also call Elder Ev Wilson at (408)268-2679 or the church at (408)356-6156—ask for the Rev. Dave Watermulder.

Your deacons are here to help! Just look for our green name tags!

Presbyterian Women had a busy month of May. We had a successful Mother’s Day Baby Shower benefitting Sophia’s Layette. Many darling outfits as well as monetary gifts were given. Punch and cookies were served and much interest was shown in our mission.

By the time you read this, we will have had another wonderful English Gar-den Tea, with outstanding sandwiches, cookies, scones, sweets and an assortment of teas. Many thanks to the women who help make and serve this traditional tea. We also wish to thank violist Linnea Powell for again lending such beautiful background music as we enjoyed the food and the fellowship of one another.

wishes to invite all women in the congregation to join us in the Redwood Grove at 5:30pm on July 20 and August 17 for a potluck supper. Bring your own table service and a dish to share. Beverages will be provided. Plan on joining us for a time of sharing a meal and fellowship together.

Hello friends!

It’s June/July. A new baby will be in our midst soon (or, depending on when you are reading this, has arrived…crazy!). Jane and I have been overwhelmingly blessed with encouragement and gifts from you all and we really can’t say thank you enough. So we’ll let you hold that baby as soon as we can.

A total life change may be coming my way, but that’s not the case with our youth programs. Thanks to the support and effort of our volunteers, summer will proceed as normal, and with a great pair of L.O.G. (Love of God) co-leaders in Lauren Finkle and Connor McKeen, I know we’ll have a great student-led retreat in August.

Have a blessed summer everyone. Now, I’m going to go learn how to change diapers!

While the Chancel Choir takes their summer break, music continues to fill the air at PCLG! Please join us on Sundays in the summer where you will experience a variety of wonderful musicians and small ensembles week-to-week. Come listen, sing, and worship with us as we use God’s gift of music to us to glorify His name!

The Handbell Choirs would like to remind us to save our aluminum cans and water bottles! They will continue to collect aluminum cans and recycleable plastic water bottles to help defray costs for Conference this June. We’re excited to be taking a group down to Disneyland where this year’s Handbell Conference will be held at the Disneyland Hotel. You may either place your cans/bottles in the designated brown recycle bins located around the church campus or bag them and place them outside the furnace room located to the right of the Music Director’s office (please, no other items other than cans and bottles). Your other plastic and metal can be placed on your curb for general recycling by your town. Also as a reminder, please do not place your bulletins or empty Styrofoam cups in any of the brown bins. Thank you for helping support our trip to Conference!

Finally, Margaret Kvamme and Shirley Harned would like to say a big

THANK YOU for your generous support at the Science Sunday concert

fund. One gift was especially generous! May we keep the mighty Möller
