    What is a Thesis ?

    A Thesis is a formal document to prove that an

    original contribution to human knowledge hasbeen done .

    Two important things:

    Identify a worthwhile problem or question which has not

    been previously answered

    Solve the problem or answer the question

    Research is simplygathering the information you need to

    answer a question and thereby help you solve a problem.

    Difference between a Master and

    Doctoral Thesis

    MBA-Level Thesis

    The contribution to

    knowledge of a Master's

    thesis can be in the

    nature of an incremental

    improvement in an area of

    knowledge, or theapplication of known

    techniques in a new area

    Doctoral Thesis

    The Ph.D. must be a

    substantial and

    innovative

    contribution to

    knowledge.

    Unlearn?Originality is the key Originality is the key in the thesis work

    Hence, students are advised to unlearn the art of faithfulreproduction of content (crudely termed as cut-copy-

    paste technique) that they are used to from their K.G.

    days in school to avoid the trap of PLAGIARISM

    Instead, one has to remember that all thoughts, ideas,expressions, sentences, models, diagrams, tables, charts,

    figures, etc. need to be necessarily ones own.

    Anybody elses work that is referred, should be

    necessarily acknowledged at the point of occurrence aswell as with appropriate reference, exhaustively detailed

    in the bibliography. This rule applies right from the stage

    of submission of thesis synopsis for topic approval, and

    holds till the completion of the thesis

    Thesis Procedure Select a Area /domain and narrow it down to a topic

    Write a topic proposal and Scope of work

    Choose an External Guide

    Talk to Guide (Internal and External ) regarding the proposed topic

    Submission of Thesis synopsis ( Max 3 pages) to Internal Guide in hard copy with

    the External guide letter

    Approval of thesis synopsis by allotment of Registration Number sent throughemail

    Submission of Response Sheets to Internal Guide

    Submission of Final Thesis (I t should be between 10000 to 30000 words)

    Appearing for the Viva Voce ( The candidate needs to handwrite at least 1200 to 1500words on the summary of thesis at the time of viva)

    Note 1

    : The Topic has to be chosen in that field where the student has been specialized

    Note 2 : There would be marks deduction or rejection of thesis for Non compliance of thesis rules

    Note 3 : Student General Identification Number is different from Thesis Registration Identification Number

    1. Details of the student specifying your Name, Batch,

    Specialization, Phone No. and Email Id

    2. Desired Area student intends to do Research in (E.g.:Advertising, Branding, Performance appraisal, Industrial relations,

    Capital/commodity market and corporate finance, Risk management,etc.)

    3. Title of the thesis

    4. Problem definition /hypothesis

    5. Literature relating to the problem (I n brief)

    Synopsis format

    11. Approval letter from External Guide

    ( Signatory note from guide stating that he/she wouldguide you )

    Note : The Approval letter should be either in the form of External guidessignature in the companys letter head or email print out from his /her official emailId or External guides signature letter with companys attestation or Externalguides signature letter attached with business card.

    Thesis Guide Internal Guide is the Thesis In charge of IIPM (Dept. of

    Projects)

    Student should have at least one External Guide

    A student can choose more than one person as his/herExternal Guide

    (Guide should be preferably from the relevant industry and domain. He/She can

    choose any outside person as his/her guide. Institute reserves the right to approve

    or reject the guide as suggested by the student)

    It is advisableto choose a Guide who is well versed as well asexperienced in the area one has chosen.

    For Ex : For Equity/ forex/commodity research A stock/research analyst )

    A Guide is expected to ONLY counsel the students with

    respect to the thesis work but not to solve the problems / dothe thesis on behalf of the student!

    Thesis Title

    It should be precise.

    It should be argumentative.

    It should be an indication of the structure of the thesis.

    It should not be an announcement.

    It should reflect the key idea (s) of your project.

    Try and use only single sentence for the Title.

    It should be specific.

    Literature Review :Relevant literature to establish a sound base for the proposed

    Late Submission FinesAll students are encouraged to complete the thesis on time and submit thesame by the due date. Only then can the academic team start the multi-

    level evaluation process. Without the successful completion of the thesis,the diploma / degree application forms shall not be accepted / forwardedfor Convocation.

    Please be informed that all ex-students up to 2006-2008 batch will attracta penalty of Rs. 5000 (five thousand only) for submitting their thesis

    late, as on 04th December, 2010. This is subject to revision.

    For students of 2007-2009 batch, the penalty amount as on 04th

    December, 2010, is Rs.1000 (one thousand only).

    Kindly note that this is just a deterrent. Students should ensure that theymake submissions on time, and thereby dont need to pay any fine.

    Viva Voce Marks & Date

    Marks Allotted for the Viva VoceThough the maximum marks allotted are 25 marks, butthe institute reserves the right to reject any thesis if thecandidate completely fails to perform in the Viva Voce.

    Viva Voce Date:

    Once the thesis has been submitted, the candidatehimself/herself should give the date (s) when he/shewould be available for the Viva Voce. The candidateshould email regarding the prospective Viva Voce dates(at least three dates), so that proper arrangement can be

    made accordingly. The Email should be sent at least oneweek before the date (s) of conduct of the Viva Voce.The candidate must bring the thesis in soft copy (CD)form on the date of conduct of the Viva Voce.

    Viva Voce Date & Thesis ResultLocation:

    Thesis Viva Voce would be held at IIPM Chennai Campus only. Ifthere is any change in the location, the candidate would beintimated about the changed location by proper mode ofcommunication.

    Duration:

    The length of the viva voce examination may vary in accordancewith different disciplinary practices and will depend on theexaminers requirements. As a guideline, it would normally be inthe range of twenty minutes and a maximum of one hour.

    Declaration of Thesis Result:-

    The candidate can expect the thesis result within a month from

    the date of completion of the Viva Voce. But the institute reservesthe right to put off the result, if any further clarification is requiredfrom the candidate or any re-evaluation is required. Generally,thesis marks would be intimated by official email Id. The Institutereserves the right to hold the thesis result for those candidateswho fail to appear for the Viva Voce.
