Small change... big effect
Thermostat Range
On/Off ControlOn/Off control is the method of control used by most heating systems in the UK. The
controls simply switch mains current supplied to the boiler on or off at different times.
When the controls switch on, the current opens the gas valve, strikes a spark and allows
the boiler to burn whilst there is a live supply to it. When the current is interrupted, the
boiler ceases to fire.†
TPI ControlTime Proportional + Integral control (TPI) is a method of calculating the demand from
a room thermostat, controlling the boiler so that it fires for shorter periods as the
temperature approaches the set point. This is an industry standard term, describing
a mathematical calculation of demand.
TPI allows the flow temperature from the boiler to fall as demand reduces, which, in
turn, helps the return temperature to stay below the Dew Point (55oC) so that the
boiler can operate in condensing mode more frequently. This effect is referred to as
Load Compensation and currently accrues a 3% boiler efficiency increase under the
SAP calculations.†
Modulating ControlModulating control is a method of control used by modern heating systems in the UK.
Instead of switching a boiler on and off at intervals, the modulation of the gas valve
allows the amount of heat provided by the boiler to be controlled to match the varying
demand signal.
The most common protocol used for modulating control of modulating boilers is
OpenTherm, a Honeywell invention that has been made into an open standard for
all to use.†
OpenThermMany boiler and control manufacturers now recognise the energy savings potential
of modulating control, so have adopted OpenTherm as the best method to control a
heating system efficiently.†
† Small change... big effect with thermostats working to close control, further large
savings can usually be made without any loss of comfort by reducing the set point.

Installation efficiency
WiredThe traditional approach to connecting controls, normally through
switching mains.
Cables must be laid in first fix, with the correct number of cores.
Once wired up, it is very reliable.
• Tried and tested
• Familiar
• Simple
What was originally fitted in the home, tends to dictate what
is achievable now. If a system was wired up many years ago,
then that means that the cables were fitted to suit an old
fashioned system.
Some boilers operate at lower voltage, so separate circuits are
required to switch 24 or 230V.
Fault finding is easy if a standard wiring system is used, or if all
cables are marked. If the person who installed the wiring made
up their own wiring diagram, the challenge is immense.

WirelessThe modern way of connecting controls. Numerous extra
benefits over wired approach.
• No first fix
• No cable laying
• No chasing out
• No lifting floorboards
• No making good
Wireless controls are quicker and cleaner to fit. The adaptable
nature of wireless allows for the user to control their heating
requirements, rather than being restricted by what was originally
fitted. For example, wireless zoning and wireless radiator valve
controllers make use of wireless signals and once installed can
be moved to alter how the system performs, with the minimum
of fuss.
By locating the receiver in the right place, a system can be made
exempt of Part P notification.
Fault finding is easy, as signals can be induced within the home
and made to operate the correct devices without reference to
previous work.
Robust RF protocols ensure that signals are sent, received
and acted upon reliably, with no confusion of signals, resulting
in improved control efficiency and increased confidence in
systems acceptability.
Two way wireless communication also gives better feedback
on installation and during use. Signal strength is displayed on
screen and the binding is confirmed at both the sending and
receiving devices.
