The air temperature is maintained constant at 25 o C during this process as a result of heat transfer to the surrounding medium at 10 o C. Determine the rate of entropy change of the air. State the assumption made in solving this problem. 5. During the isothermal heat addition process of a Carnot cycle, 900 kJ of heat is added to the working fluid from a source at 400 o C. Determine: a) The entropy change of the working fluid b) The entropy change of the source c) The total entropy change for the process. 6. Refrigerant-134a enters the coils of the evaporator of a refrigeration system as a saturated liquid-vapor mixture at a pressure of 200 kPa. The refrigerant absorbs 120 kJ of heat from the cooled space, which is maintained at -5 o C, and leaves as saturated vapor at the same pressure. Determine: a) The entropy change of the refrigerant b) The entropy change of the cooled space c) The total entropy change for this process. 7. The radiator of a steam heating system has a volume of 20 L and is filled with superheated water vapor at 200 kPa and 200 o C. At this moment both the inlet and the exit valves to the radiator are closed. After a while the temperature of the steam drops to 80 o C as a result of heat transfer to the room air. 9. An insulated piston-cylinder device contains 5 L of saturated liquid water at a constantpressure of 150 kPa. An electric resistance heater inside the cylinder is now turned on,and 2200 kJ of energy is transferred to the steam. Determine the entropy change of thewater during this process in kJ/K.

10. Air is compressed in a piston-cylinder device from 90 kPa and 20oC to 400 kPa in areversible isothermal process. Determine:

a) The entropy change of airb) The work done.

11. Air is compressed in a piston-cylinder device from 100 kPa and 17oC to 800 kPa in areversible, adiabatic process. Determine the final temperature and the work done duringthis process, assuming:

a) Constant specific heatsb) Variable specific heats for air.

12. A quantity of gas has an initial pressure, volume and temperature of 140 kPa, 0.14 m3, and25oC respectively. It is compressed to a pressure of 1.4 kPa according to the lawPV1.25 = constant, determine the change of entropy.
