A Blue Carpet Affair

Homecomming. Funny how one word can bring so many reminders, memories, songs in your head and pictures to your mind.

The music was pumping and students were dancing with ex-citment still left over from the winning game before.

The school had professional pictures being taken, free food, sweet tea, and when even the chaperons have fun, you know it was definitely a blue carpet af-fair.

Fashion for the evening was semi-formal. Though dress pants and nice shirts for boys, and dark colored cocktail dresses for the ladies were popular.

Shoes for the evening were dress shoes for men, and high heels for the women, but they

were often kicked off and left in a corner as the students decided dancing was easier done bare-foot.

Many different hairstyles were seen throughout the night. The girls wore their hair down and straight, or up and curled.

The boys, well we were glad to see that they actually bushed their hair for the event and didn’t just run their hands over it. Ev-eryone looked very nice and rep-resented our school well.

There was a lot of diversity in the music for this year’s home-coming.

The DJ played it all, from rap to rock to county. Now it is time to talk about the dancing.

We had people doing the Choo choo train and people windin’ and grindin’; doing the Cotton Eyed Joe, and not to mention the Soulja Boy.

Most of the kids danced with-in their group of friends, but when a popular song comes on, the crowd goes into a line dance and moves as one, well except for those two or three kids that dance to the beat of their own drum and create a ripple on the wave of as one.

Though three different ver-sions of the same song did get old, the students enjoyed them and danced every time.

The dancing was all good, clean fun and was enjoyed by all.

Overall, homecoming was an absolute hit. The dance was exciting, the people all dressed beautifully, and we were cel-ebrating a victory.

What could be better than that?

Football Rebels beat Lakeside

On November 2, 2007, the ECHS varsitiy football team played their homecoming game and senior night game against Lakeside-Evans.

After four grueling quarters, our ECHS Rebels came out on top with a 7-0 victory.

With the homecoming/senior night game won and one step closer to the playoffs, the students of ECHS couldn’t be happier.

Thanks to a video by the Rebel Football Team Video Crew, new information about the Lakeside game was revealed.

Apparently, during the fourth quarter, Lakeside grew desperate as a Rebel victory became appar-ent and decided to cheat.

On the video, you notice one player, receiver #2 , run off of the field and stand in an empty spot beside some of his fellow team mates as, farther up the field, an-other Lakeside receiver runs out in an attempt to catch the pass and score.

Also, one Lakeside coach is seen running quickly back into the coach’s box from the far left near the goal post.

These acts of desperation went unnoticed by the referees and by most of the spectators. The coaches reviewed the tapes to see that the illegal play was there.

Effingham County High School’s band has held a par-ticular event every October now for three years straight. They put four full days of work into it and unveil it for all of us to see for a cost of four dollars.

Upon entering the Haunted House the sounds of creepy music, screaming, moans, loud banging enter your ears, among other things.

Tours of five would venture into curtains within certain time intervals so that the tours would not meet up in the middle of the exhibits. The wait was only five minutes, but while I was waiting our tour guide, Richard Morgan, continued to psyche us up, mak-ing me even more anxious.

Soon it began and we walked down a long tunnel where a man tried to sell three coffins to us before the tour began. I don’t think he got any takers. When I entered the next room, the start of the tour, I was expecting fake looking decorations, but to my surprise all of the rooms were well put together and looked very nice, very efficient.

Each room was from a dif-ferent horror movie, the first one belonging to Freddy Kru-ger. The second room was a mad scientist’s lab, with dead bodies strewn across the floor. Zom-bies from Night of The Living Dead arose to greet us when we entered the third room, but they were quickly dispatched with Richard’s shotgun.

Room four was a little girl’s room, toys and dolls scattered around with a single bed in the middle, on the bed was a terri-fied, shaking girl. Who had vis-ited the little girl in her room? None other than Chuckie from Child’s Play.

Before we walked into the fifth room a television screen flashed before us to reveal Billy the Puppet giving us a warning, afterwards we embarked into the

room to see a scene from Saw.The sixth room was said to

be the most time consuming room, or should I say rooms, for the one scene involved three different rooms. The first room contained a part of a cemetery, with a couple running through, yelling in fear about the ghost of Mary Shaw.

When you continued into the next room you’d see a huge tomb-stone engraved with the name Mary Shaw, once there our tour guide recited a poem about her, saying that that the poor woman had no children, only dolls, and if you see her do not scream, or she’ll cut your tongue off at the scene.

So we continued into the third and final room of Dead Silence, which was Mary’s puppet room. Upon entering, curtains unveiled and allowed us to see her puppets dancing until they jumped off and attacked, we quickly left to run into the ghost of Mary Shaw herself. Simply ignoring her, we walked up a flight of stairs and entered the seventh room, the torture chamber.

People were in different ma-chines designed for torture and demons jumped out to scare us. In the final room we watched a man die in the electric chair, and his soul rising up to haunt us. When we left more demons tried to spook my group until we walked down the stairs to leave. The band had another surprise left as we left, for a man with a chainsaw chased us out.

All in all, I enjoyed it. The presentation and sound effects had me spooked; but I definitely suggest that next year you go to ECHS’s Haunted House.

Rincon has always proved to be a small town, not much in it, not much going on.

That is until recently... As you drive into Rincon you’ll find construction going on, it seems that as soon as it started, all the construction is slowly coming to an end as the stores are popping up.

To me, Rincon looks like a new place. Lowes and Walgreens have been built across from the Wal-Mart, and as I’m sure most of you have noticed, many stores have been installed where the old Kroger was.

Along with Shoe Show, Farmer’s Furniture, Lovely Nails, Coin Laundry, Freds, and China Delight which have been in the 21 South Shopping Center, Maurices, Rue 21, Game Stop and Goodies have been added, bringing a new style to the strip mall, now called ‘Fort Howard Square’.

Perhaps the most excit-ing addition for the teenagers of Rincon is the shop Rue 21. This shop will add cooler, newer clothes to our town and will help us save money not only in the price but in gas as well. I went into this shop and got more than I expected; great clothes, great styles, great prices. Not only do they have shirts and bottoms, but also Ect!. Ect! is purely accesso-ries, one fourth of their store is dedicated to it.

I spoke with manager Jessica B. Thompson and she told me that they are always ready to ac-cept anybody willing to work, experienced or not.

All you need is a friendly, out-going personality and a worker’s permit and you could have a job at Rue 21 along with all the dis-counts and benefits.

The starting wage is a little over minimum wage, ranging about $6.35-6.50.

Rue 21 had different styles and sizes for girls and boys alike, so everybody should be able to get something. This is definitely a store I recommend. 10AM-9PM is their closing times on Monday through Saturday.

On Sunday they open at 12 and close at 6.The other new store is Game Stop, which is a video game store. I’ve been raised around video games, I’m mostly a Nintendo fan, but I found that this store had a good supply in games for all the systems. I’m excited about the Maurices and Goody’s coming in; both should prove to be worth a visit.

Maybe these new stores are a glimpse of what is to come in Rincon, or maybe it’s all we’ll re-ceive. Whatever the outcome is for our growing community, I’m happy that we now have a better variety of stores to shop at.

Rebel Regiment hosts haunted house

Rincon adding new stores, new shopping

By Katie [email protected]

With the season starting, four wrestlers have started us off. Oc-tober 20th Wade Hall, Kevin Ulmer, Josh Barnhill, and Zack Gilliam went to the Super 32 preseason tournament. All four were in separate weight classes; there were also 125 wrestlers in each man bracket.

Josh Barnhill, junior in the 103lb weight class, started off winning five and only losing two. He is wrestling great this year.

Being two rounds away from be-ing an All-American, he beat an undefeated All-American state champion from Arizona.

Wade Hall, freshman in the 112lb weight class, won four rounds and lost two, he is work-ing up to do his best. Wade said, “I didn’t do as well as I expected but I will practice to get where I want to be as for the. Overall season, it will be tough, but I am going to do my best.”

Sophomore, Kevin Ulmer, is in the 119lb weight class won one of the three rounds beating

a Texas state champion. Kevin said, “I want to be in the 112lb weight class but I do feel good about this and want to do bet-ter than last year.” He also says, “I have a good chance going to state for challenges.”

Last but not least is also a ju-nior Zack Gilliam. He places in the 125lb weight class. He won three of the matches only losing two matches. He works hard and does his best to get to the top.

These guys work hard, push-ing themselves as far as they can, being the best they can be.

Wrestling performs well at the beginning of season

Ford’s CornerCoach Ford

Do you think that the homecoming dance went well?

I think it did. It was a good homecoming, I think the kids enjoyed the fi ve dress down days they had. Everyone had good school spirit. The pep rally was really good.

Do you feel that anything could have gone better?

There is always room for improvement but I thought it was a really good homecoming. We always strive to make homecoming bet-ter but I think the homecoming committee di a great job. It’s a tough task.

Are you looking forward to next year’s dance?

Absolutely. It’s always fun to see the kids dressed up and coming with their dates, dancing, taking picutres and just having fun.

therebelspotlight/favsLook out ECHS there’s a new

band rising to the top.Quickly climbing the charts

in the UK, Switches is definitely not your average Indy band. Combining elements from both British and US Indy, Switches is definitely something you can dance to.

With a pulsing new wave style beat, guitars that “chug” and three part harmonies in-stead of your traditional vocals and back up vocals, Switches has something for everyone who en-

joys rock. The lyrics are catchy and

sometimes contradictory of Switches up beat style. The songs definitely pack a punch.

Switches, consisting of lead singer, Matt Bishop; Guitarist, Ollie Thomas; Drummer, Jimmy G; and bassist, Max Tite are a surprising mix.

All coming from different musical backgrounds ranging from sixties psychedelic-tinged virtuosity like Jimmy Hendrix to nineties and beyond, the boys of

Switches all add their own flair to the band’s music.

Switches got its start when singer Matt Bishop was in col-lege. All he did was send out an email and choose the people he liked best, even though they might not have liked the same music.

The band, originally called Matt Rock and the Others, were almost immediately winning Battle of the Bands style contests and playing in supporting slots for bands like The Darkness.

The guys all quit school to devote themselves to their mu-sic, changing the bands name to Switches.

Switches ended up touring for a year before being signed. In-stead of heading straight to the studio, Switches hit the road, on a mission to solidify their sound and present a connected musical front.

Over all, Switches is a band that attracts a wide fan base and should be checked out by everyone. Their debut CD is re-

lease date is set for February 12, 2008.

I recommend that you buy the CD and give it a listen. But, if you don’t feel like paying for some-thing you’ve never heard before, you can always check out www.myspace.com/weareswitches.

As vocalist Matt Bishop said, “Rock music is still alive and kicking...” So get out there and check out Switches.
