Assessment of: Questions to ask:

Necessity What informational needs can be addressed by programs?

What are the known values of the proposed program?

What are the goals of the proposed program?

What criteria will be used to select one program over another?

What would be the indices that prove a program has been impactful?

Scalability What professional skills and competencies are needed to create the program?

What level of staff resources will go into program design?

Who will initiate the program?

How will the program be underwritten – both short and long term?

Sustainability What level of staff resources will be expended on ongoing program management?

How can community collaborations strengthen program longevity?

What partnerships will be most suitable for program type?

Can volunteers play a relevant role in program maintenance?

Signaling change

Digital meetsphysicalAnna-Maria Soininvaara

Digitalizationconfuses both thecustomers and thedecision makers.

61

Is the library for the books…

…or is the library for the customers?

62

63

In the planning process of Oodi, digital services and signs have beencarefully considered together with the customers too.

64

The customer finds the digital services outside of the library space. Inside the library the digital services are first seen in the signs. The info screens of

Oodi are mostly used as guide signs.

65

The main services, i.e. lending and information services, have beenavailable as digital versions for a long time.

66

In lending machines, digital and physical services have for long met in a simple way.

67

At the moment, we aim to find robotics and AI solutions in fourcategories: logistics, information services, recommendations and

children’s services

In logistics, robotics can bring huge savings. On the other hand, we aretrying to find software that involves AI elements: smart technology and the

ability to learn.68

69

An information service robot or program can ease open access to government data. The location of Oodi opposite to the parliament house

underlines the importance of these services.

70

In the recommendation services digitality and the usage of big data areessential. However, these services need to be organized in a way that truly

meets the customers needs instead of just offering the same content for everyone.

71

In children’s services a robot may be cute but the purpose needs to be to tempt the child to focus on something that requires concentration, like

reading.

72

Robotics and digital devices as learning tools

73

How are e-materials visible in physical spaces?

74

The inner spaces of Oodi are planned with the help of VR application

75

The work itself is changing: the library staff helps customers to use thedigital material, but some of them still prefer the good old print!

76

Can mobile applications replace the human – new self service?

With building technology and IoT, everything can be observed and controlled

78

Booking spaces or other resources links the digital to the physical.

79

The biggest challenge is to get the decision makers to understand thedigital world and the new role of libraries…

WHAT WOULD A

WORLD WITHOUT

LIBRARIES LOOK

LIKE?

LET’S NOT JUST TELL

PEOPLE HOW

LIBRARIES HAVE

CHANGED.

LET’S SHOW THEM.

IF YOU DON’T TELL YOUR

STORY, SOMEONE ELSE

WILL.
