  • THEME: IN THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST SUB-THEME: The Power of Jesus Christ (3) TOPIC: Power over Demons TEXTS: Mark 1:32-34; Mark 5:1-13 AIMS: i. to expose some satanic activities through demonic angels, ii. to show further on the superiority of Jesus Christ over demons and iii. to teach that the only power demons respect and bow to, is that of and in the name of Jesus

Christ. INTRODUCTION: Demons are evil spirits that work with and serve satan and know that Jesus is the Messiah. If they had been permitted to speak, they would have proclaimed His Messiahship in the synagogue ahead of the appointed time of proclamation. (Mark 1:24). However, in the case of the Legion in the Gadarene demoniac, they begged Jesus not to torment them (Mark 5:7), Knowing that they themselves were tormentors and destroyers of their victims. They also saw in Jesus, their own destined tormentor and destroyer, anticipating and dreading what they knew and felt to be awaiting them; because they were conscious that they had only temporary powers and could not operate except by Jesus’ permission. STUDY GUIDE/questions 1. In your understanding, what are demons? Matt 25:41; Jude 1:6; Rev 12:7-9. 2. Describe some satanic activities you know. John 8:42, 44; 2 Pet 2:3, 4 and how are they

operated? Mark 5:2-5; Acts 19:13, 14. 3. In Acts 8:9-11; 18-24; who was Simon the magician, what was his work and how did he submit

to Jesus’ authority? 4. How can you prove to unbelievers today that the only power demons respect is that in the name

of Jesus Christ? Matt 16:17; Acts 16:18; Phil 2:9-11. CONCLUSION: Our Lord Jesus Christ is “the seed of the woman” that was to bruise the head of satan and destroy his works (Gen 3:15). Therefore, demons as messengers of satan regarded Jesus’ coming to them as premature and bowed to Him, asking Him not to send them to the final place of eternal torment before their time. FOOD FOR THOUGHT: Jesus Christ, who ascended on high has taken captive all captivities. MEMORY VERSE: Phil 2:9-11 “Therefore, God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus, every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father”.

  • SPIRITUAL TONIC FOR THE WEEK 2 Chronicles 7:14

“If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and

turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their

    land.”

Dear God, come and take Your rightful position in our country Nigeria. Give the leaders of this nation

the wisdom and integrity to lead our nation in the best direction. Give them discernment when making

decisions. May the decisions that they reach be godly and wise and in the best interest of your people

    of this Nation.

As the days become increasingly dark in our country, we pray that the light of Your love will shine on

this land. May peace reign in our nation and protect us from those that would seek our downfall.

Thank You Father for our country. In Jesus' name. Amen.

ON THE OTHER SIDE A first-time flyer was even more nervous when her flight was delayed

twice due to mechanical problems. The paasengers were finally allowed to board, and the plane took off.

A few minutes later, the lights began to flicker. The woman beckoned a flight attendant and asked her about the lights. “I’ll take care of it,” the flight attendant assured her. Moments later the lights went out.

The passenger seated next to the woman leaned over and said, “Whatever you do, please don’t ask about the engines!”

  • PRAYER FOR THE YEAR

Almighty God, the King of kings, You rule over all in heaven and on earth and Your reign is everlasting. Thank You for the grace to be citizens of Your Kingdom, make us understand our place in this kingdom, help us to represent Your interest very well on earth, enable us to comport ourselves as worthy ambassadors of Your Kingdom and Strengthen us to make known the peace and joy and all other benefits that come with Your rule in the world that through us the whole Creation will be delivered from its futility and hopelessness and in the end may we receive the crown of glory and shine as stars in Your eternal kingdom through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

THY KINGDOM COME, O LORD - A&MRW 816 Tune: St. Cecilia

    1. Thy kingdom come, O God, thy rule, O Christ, begin; break with thine iron rod the tyrannies of sin.

2 Where is thy reign of peace and purity and love? When shall all hatred cease, as in the realms above?

3 When comes the promised time that war shall be no more, and lust, oppression, crime

    shall flee thy face before?

4 We pray thee, Lord, arise, and come in thy great might; revive our longing eyes, which languish for thy sight. 5 Men scorn thy sacred name, and wolves devour thy fold; by many deeds of shame we learn that love grows cold.

6 O’er lands both near and far thick darkness broodeth yet: arise, O Morning Star, arise, and never set!

    Coming Events (November-December, 2020)

  • “…since you excel in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness and in the love we have kindled in you — see that you also excel in this grace of giving.” - 2 Corinthians 8:7

Freewill Offering is another means of support for the Kingdom of God. Unlike Tithe which is the payment of one tenth of one’s income or produce as commanded by God; Freewill Offering is presented out of the benevolence or religious impulse of heart of the giver, and not in fulfilment of any obligation, promise, or vow. It is given to the Lord freely, spontaneously, willingly, voluntarily, and abundantly. Basically, Freewill Offering is given for the advancement of God’s plan and purpose in the world. In Exodus 25:2, God instructed Moses thus: “Tell the Israelites to bring me an offering. You are to receive the offering for me from everyone whose heart prompts them to give.” Freewill Offering comprises of money and materials given as an expression of love for Yahweh. The contributions of Israel to the construction and furnishings of the Tabernacle in the wilderness (Exodus 35: 29, 36:3); the materials presented for the building of the First Temple (I Chron. 29: 5b-9, 14); the gifts for the support of the Temple service under King Hezekiah (II Chron. 31:14); the contributions toward the building of the Second Temple in Jerusalem, mentioned in the decree of Cyrus (Ezra 1:4); the gifts of Israel in its own land toward religious services (Ezra 3:5); and the material wealth carried back by Ezra (8:28) are all classified as Freewill Offerings to the Lord. In Paul’s word in 1Corinthians 16:2, Christians are to give Freewill Offering on a weekly basis,

he says: “ On the first day of every week, each one of you should set aside a sum of money in keeping with your income, saving it up, so that when I come no collections will have to be made. “ (1 Corinthians 16:2). Paul here teaches the Corinthians that their Freewill Offering is

an act of worship which is to be a part of their regular worship. In other words, when we put our money in the plate on Sundays, we are worshiping Almighty God in accordance with His Word. The truth remains that He does not need our resources to accomplish His plans and purposes. After all, He owns the cattle on a thousand hills (Psalm 50:10) and needs nothing from us. What He desires, however, and what He values, is the heart that overflows with gratitude and thanksgiving to the God who saved us and who gives us all things, knowing our needs before we even ask (Matthew 6:8).

Apostle Paul says: “…since you excel in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness and in the love we have kindled in you — see that you also excel in this grace of giving.” (2Corinthians 8:7). We are expected to be generous and cheerful in giving to support the work of God’s Kingdom. In 2 Corinthians 9:6-7, we read: “Now this I say, he who sows sparingly shall also reap sparingly; and he who sows bountifully shall also reap bountifully. Let each one do just as he has purposed in his heart; not grudgingly or under compulsion; for God loves a cheerful giver.” Our Freewill Offering is a clear demonstration that money does not control us but rather we control it and direct it for godly purposes. It is a declaration that God has prior claim in our lives above the claim of material wealth. No wonder, a generous giver is rarely plagued by the love of money because the love of God has first place. Jesus Christ in Luke 6:38 tells us that when we give, we can expect to receive a harvest multiplied, pressed down, shaken together and overflowing which means the measure that we use to give to God is the measure He uses to give back to us.

    SOUL FOOD 43/2020

  • I urge us today not to be wary in giving to God. We must not yield to the godless value of the present age. Let us continue to give freely to support the work of God in the Cathedral and our harvest is guaranteed. Please note that it has nothing to do with our financial muscle, it is not whether it is plentiful like Solomon’s or meagre and paltry like the Widow’s Mite, what is of essence is our expression of love to God. Remember Giver never lacks!

    Have a blessed week!
