In A Wrinkle in Time, by Madeleine L’engle, the characters have to use love to save each other.

Without love, none of the characters would survive. These things surround the overall theme of

the novel: Love. L’engle helps the readers know that anyone could be a hero by doing anything,

and you should be nice to everyone. In A Wrinkle in Time, Meg Murry doesn’t know that she is

loved by people because she thinks that no one likes her because of the way she acts. Meg finds

it hard to find friends. In this excerpt, Meg and her brother struggle to find their father who has

gone missing for two years. Love can save us from dangerous people and situations. The theme

of love in the novel demonstrates how good can conquer evil when Meg uses love to save her

brother, when knowing she is loved giving her the strength to do when she needs to do and

Charles’ love for his father ultimately saves him. One example of the theme of love

demonstrated in the story is when Meg saves her brother using love. “Mrs.Whatsit hates you”,

said Charles Wallace.”Charles, Charles, I love you. My baby brother who always takes care of

me. Come back to me, Charles Wallace, come away from IT, come back, and come home. I love

you, Charles.Oh, Charles Wallace, I love you” (Meg, 200).Meg demonstrates that she loves her

brother; she wants to rescue him so he remembers her. Meg tells Charles that he was the one who

always took care of her; she is trying to convince him to try and let the thing that’s inside him go.

Love is shown when Meg saves her brother; knowing that she is loved gives her the power to do

what she need to do. Another example of love is introduced when Meg knows that she is

loved, which gives her the strength to do things that she needs to do.”Charles Wallace slipped his

hand confidingly in Meg’s, and the sweet, little-boy gesture warmed her so that she felt the tense

knot inside her begin to loosen. Charles loves me at any rate; she thought (Narrator, 30).By

giving Meg this love, Charles shows her that there is someone who cares for her, and someone

she needs to fight for. This love gives Meg the courage, strength, and confidence to do the fight

she needs in order to save Charles. Love gives us the strength to do things that we need to do, as

well as helping us to save our loved ones. The final example of love depicts an even

greater love, a self-sacrificial love that Charles uses to save his father.”Try to find out who I am,

then”, said The Man with the Red Eyes.”I have been trying”, Charles Wallace said.”Look into

my eyes. Look deep within them and I will tell you”, said The Man with the Red Eyes (119).

Charles Wallace looked quickly at Meg and Calvin, then said, as thought to himself, “I have to”

(120).This shows that Charles was going to let the man hypnotize him is because Charles wants

IT to take him to his father. Charles would do anything to save his father, like sacrificing himself

in the book. L’engle seems to be referring to the verse from the gospel of John, ”Greater love

hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends”-John 15:13.The verse

explains that the best thing a person can do to a friend is sacrifice themselves. These verses

explain that the best kind of love is when someone sacrifices life to save someone else’s life like

Charles did for his father. In conclusion, the theme of love in the novel demonstrates how

good can conquer evil when Meg uses love to save her brother, when knowing that she is loved

given her the strength to do when she needs to do and Charles’ love for his father ultimately

saves him. Love is very significant in this book without it. Charles and Mr.Murry will still be

held captive by IT and The Man with the Red Eyes. Love can save people in different ways.

What do other people think about love and what does it do? I think that other people think that

love can help them if they need it and makes them feel good about themselves. What does love

do to save us? Love can save us if we need food or shelter and we don’t have the money to buy

those necessities. Love and other people can help us to survive. The characters have to use love

to save each other.
