Itisoftenconvenienttoidentifyargumentsof(Fregean)predicatesintermsofthefollowingthematicroles,whichareillustratedbelow.

Agentsareargumentsthatbringaboutastateofaffairs.Thelinebetweenagents,ontheonehand,andinstrumentsorcauses,ontheother,canbefuzzy,butagentsare(orareperceivedtobe)consciousorsentient,inawaythatinstrumentsorcausesaren't.Someexamplesaregivenin(1)(3).
