Dear Fellow Members:

April is the first full month of Spring.Hopefully, the weather gods willcooperate so that sailing and boatingseason can have an early start this year.Launch season is under way so pleasecooperate with Yardmaster Miles Blissto ensure our boats “get splashed”without incident.

Thanks to the Women’s Association for sponsoring and funding thecost of our new Clubhouse sound system, and the TechnologyCommittee for the installation. It is truly a much neededenhancement to our Clubhouse atmosphere.

Committee Chairs are reminded to contact Clubhouse ManagerCynthia Rushlaw immediately to make arrangements for theircommittee’s Compass photo.

The Facilities Committee is finalizing our dredging plans for theentrance to our basin which will hopefully be performed beforeMemorial Day.

At its last meeting, the Board agreed to “partner” with the U.S.Power Squadron and the Otetiana Council of the Boy Scouts topromote the Sea Scout project, a very worthy effort.

By Dick WambachProtocol Officer

It is customary, in some areas mandatory, for yachts visiting foreign waters todisplay the ensign of the country visited. This “courtesy flag” is flown at theoutboard signal halyard of the foremoststarboard spreader or the starboardyardarm of a signal mast if so equipped.Mast-less vessels will carry the foreignflag instead of the Club burgee at the bow.An alternative for power boats is thestarboard radio antenna.

Although the practice is more informal inCanada, many countries require theinternational “Q” to be flown untilcustoms has been cleared.

When returning from foreign waters, takedown the courtesy flag and return the multiple hoisted flags to the starboardhalyard. The courtesy flag is not intended as a badge of accomplishment for havingcruised in foreign waters.

It has been the practice at RYC to use thestarboard signal halyard to fly (in order),the Club burgee, Officer flag, Cruise flag(s).In no case should any of these flags beflown on the same halyard as the courtesy

flag – i.e. the foreign courtesy flag isNEVER multiple hoisted.

We must remember that our Yacht Club isa social organization and regulations orrules as above are intended only asguidelines. While it is useful to know thatnautical protocols exist, we have nomandate to observe them.

NOTE: This Spring would be a good timeof year to add a port signal halyard, or toconsider adding and inboard starboardsignal halyard approximately one footinboard from the shroud. The size of thecourtesy flag should be the same as ourClub burgee: 1/2 inch on the fly for eachfoot of boat length. Remember, theCanadian flag has different proportionsthan the U.S. ensign. It is 1 to 2 vs. theU.S. 2 to 3 (hoist to fly) i.e. a 24 inchCanadian flag is 12 inches high, whereasthe U.S. ensign is 24” x 16”. (Beware, some marine stores may have an improperflag.) While we are on the subject, neverfly the Nautical Ensign (circle of starsaround a fouled anchor) in Canada.

There was a time when all flags exceptofficer flags were flown only from 0800until sunset. To afford greater identity,New York Yacht Club, once theacknowledged guardian of yachtingetiquette, decided in the mid-70s that onlythe U.S. ensign need be taken in at sunset(or at the end of the cruising day).

Ever have a really bad day? One where youwould think nothing else could possibly gowrong? I bet I have you beat. I have kept

this story confidential for fear of winning theIfweda trophy for a third time.

It was about a decade ago when I found myselfboatless after selling my old C&C Redwing 30. Tosolve the problem of the expanded free time andexcess cash, I purchased a nice clean Tartan 30from a broker in Mt. Clemins, MI. I planned oncruising and racing it on Lake Ontario out of ouryacht club in Rochester. How to get it home? Itcould be a nice July Fourth adventure for mywife, Gail, and I to sail down with the prevailingwinds through Lake Erie and the Welland canalto Rochester. She was anxious to try somethingdifferent from our usual 1000 Islands cruise forthe week so we agreed that I would figure outall of the logistics and we’d do it.

We loaded up the Subaru with gear including 9ft inflatable and “theft proof” 9.2 Chrysleroutboard. Our friend Brad drove the car back toRochester after dumping us off at the marina inMt. Clemins. Cebare (I still have no idea whatthat name means ) had been launched and waswaiting for us in a slip. Skip Boston (locallegendary sailmaker) had done some Dacronmastery on the old sails and fitted a furling headstay for us. A minor check out and we chuggedout of Mt. Clemins for a nice sail down Lake St.Clare the next morning. We made it to the BayView Yacht Club and entertained the raucousFriday night crowd backing into a guest slipwhen the reverse stuck in gear.

Next couple of days were spent riding thecurrent down the Detroit River and through theshallow west end of Lake Erie. Stops at Put-In-Bay for July Fourth fireworks and Mentor Ohiofor the annual Canada Goose herding event werepleasant and relatively uneventful.

We departed Mentor on a hot morning. Thesummer high had set in and the breeze averagedabout 6 knots from the southwest. The lake wasflat. The air was hot and heavy. The old Atomic 4pushed us up the Lake at 5 knots. That gave usonly a fraction of a knot of apparent breeze; notenough to rid us of the flesh eating flies thatbreed so well on the Great Lakes. It was alreadya long day when just before dinner the enginelimped and died. The batteries were dead. Thealternator was fried.

Now we are about 8 miles from the inlet to Erie,Pa harbor. It was late afternoon on a weekdaywith thunderstorm warnings, so we had the laketo ourselves. Gail asks why I don’t call for helpon the radio. No power I say. “Let’s just wait forthe wind to come up. After all this is a sailboat”.We took a dip and cooked dinner on theHomestrand alcohol bomb. We watched the sundisappear into the evening haze. Not a

breath of wind appeared. What now ?

Remember that 9 ft inflatable and Chrysler 9.2outboard that no one would ever steal? Well, Ipumped up the dingy, clamped on the outboard, siphoned gas from the Atomic 4s supply into therusty outboard tank, and yes, I remembered toadd oil. All set for the tugboat exercise. Lashedthe dingy to the starboard side of Cebare and offwe went at a 2 knot clip. We arrived at the Erieship channel entrance to the harbor aboutmidnight. We managed to navigate into theharbor and turn north about a half mile andanchor in Misery Bay so named by CommodorePerry who was probably towed there by dingy aswell. A peaceful night’s sleep ensued.

Bright the next morning the wind was up to adelightful 15 knots out of the west. We loaded abattery into the dingy and delivered it to amarina on the mainland side of the harbor. Wewere impatient watching it recharge, so after anhour I decided to retrieve Cebare and bring herback over to the pleasant little yacht club nextto the marina and have the mechanic look at thealternator directly.

Back at Misery Bay we find that the new furlingline was loose allowing a few feet of genoa tocatch some breeze and Cebare has draggedabout a mile over near the NE corner of theharbor. No problem. We get on board lashingthe dingy to the starboard side as before. Irestarted the outboard breaking the aged rewindcord mechanism. OK. Remove the top of themotor and make a pull cord like I used to use ondad’s old lawn mower. Works fine. Start theoutboard and crank it up to full throttle. I jumpback on board Cebare and run forward to haul inthe anchor rode while Gail keeps this whole rigpointed into the wind. The kelp salad on theanchor took about 5 minutes to remove, butthen we were on our way back down to the shipchannel. Once in the ship channel we had tomake a 90 degree turn to the west (right) totravel the next mile to the yacht club. With afreshening breeze blowing from right to left andthe old 9.2 screaming away on the starboard sideit became quickly apparent that a right turnwasn’t in the cards. I suppose a 270 degree leftturn would have been, but I wasn't that cool. Ireached over to the 9.2, cut the throttle andshifted to neutral, ran forward, and dropped theanchor before we powered into the docks on thesouth side of the harbor.

As luck would have it three teenagers werebuzzing around in ski boat killing time andburning off fuel. I hailed them and they agreedto give us a tow. Tow line on, anchor up andwe're off to the YC. Remember the dingy on thestarboard side with the 9.2 at idle? Well, it isbeginning to bang around in the newly formedchop, so I figure I’ll tow it astern while we’re

being towed. While unfastening the mystery knoton the lifeline the dingy got away from me andquickly left our company. I looked back to seethe little grey inflatable bouncing in our wakewith the 9.2 humming at idle. Hail the kids, drop the anchor, kids motor back to retrieve thedingy, secure the dingy, retie the tow line, haulup the anchor, and we’re back under tow. Whew!

We are nearing what appears to be the guestdock at the small YC so I have the kids cast usoff in time to neatly carry our way up to leewardside of the dock and land like the experts thatwe are. I tried to give the kids a twenty for theirtrouble, but being of honest Midwestern stock, they politely refused. The 6 pack of beer I offerednext was received with no hesitation.

Safely at the guest dock, the mechanic dropsover, removes the alternator, and announces thathe can get it rebuilt by the next morning. Notbad. So now we have time on our hands. Gailgets comfortable in the cockpit, propping herswollen, fly bitten ankle on a cushion, andpulling out a novel. I start wandering around thepleasant little YC looking for some conversation. It was a weekday and the place was deserted. Inotice that the “honey wagon” (that is a mobilepump out device or septic tank on wheels ) wasconveniently parked next to the guest dock. Witha good eye for dimensions, I figured the hosecould easily reach the pump out fitting onCebare’s deck. Yes it was plugged in and lookedoperable. Fine. I carried the hose to the fitting, clamped it on nice and tight. Made sure the gatevalve was closed, climbed back to the dock. Ifound the power switch, flipped it on, and thepump started that characteristic garrump…garrump… .garrump… sound. Great. I’m inbusiness. I leap over the deck to the gate valveat the deck fitting and opened it to start theprecious extraction process. Garrump…Garrump…sploosh… garrump… sploosh…garrump… sploosh. Wait a minute! What’s withthe sploosh? I twist around to find the source ofthe sploosh sound is the vent atop the honeywagon letting loose pulses of a chunky blue mistdirectly up wind of my loving wife reading hernovel in the cockpit. In the few seconds before Icould shut the system down the damage wasdone. Nothing a few quarts of Clorox and ashower couldn’t fix up, but it took Gail a fewhours to see the humor in the whole day.

Other than the obvious lessons learned aboutspare parts, anchoring, and messing withsomeone else’s full honey wagon, I think I needto congratulate myself on successfully creatingan interesting few hours in what would haveotherwise been just another dull day on thewater.
