Ratherthansimplygivingtheyearcountfrom1904,theThelemiccalendarusesatwo-tieredsystem.The"upper"levelgivesacountoftwenty-twoyearperiodssince1904;the"lower"levelgivestheyearssincethestartofthecurrenttwenty-twoyearperiod.Botharezero-based,withnonzeronumbersbeingrepresentedasupperandlowercaseRomannumerals,respectively.So,forexample,thecivilyear1996is(afterMarch20)ThelemicyearIViv,because1904+(4*22)+4equals1996.

SomeThelemitesassignthetwenty-twoyearsofeachcycletothetwenty-twoTrumpsoftheTarot.The22-yearperiodnumbersthemselvesarealsoassignedinthisway.Hence,1996isdoublylinkedtoTrumpIVoftheTarot,theEmperor.

Withineachyear,datesandtimesareoftenexpressedbythepositionsoftheSunandMoonintheTropicalzodiac.Forexample,May12,1996EVat6pmPSTwouldbeexpressedas"IViv,Sol22Taurus,Luna29Pisces."Thisspecifiestheprecisedateandtimetowithinabouttwohours.
