The Fightercomes home
Christian Bale and Mark Wahlberg in a scene from The Fighter
ST LOUIS: His glamorous lifein Beverly Hills is the basisfor the TV series Entourage, but Mark Wahlberg left hisheart in Massachusetts.
Raised in the tough Bostonsuburb of Dorchester, wherehe was a teenage car thiefand drug dealer, the actor-turned-producer returned tohis home state to film thetrue-life boxing bio The Figh-ter. In a recent phone inter-view with the St Louis Post-Dispatch, Wahlberg said hislocal notoriety could be a dis-traction. ‘‘For about twoweeks, it’s good to be home, but then it becomes pretty
hectic,’’ he said. When Wah-lberg shot The Perfect Stormin Massachusetts in 1999,some of his old cronies visi-ted the set and he had to stopthem from stealing the cam-eras.
But like the characterbased on Wahlberg in En-tourage, he is famously loyal. The Fighter, the story of box-er Micky Ward and his trou-bled half-brother Dickie Eck-lund, was directed by DavidO Russell, with whom Wah-lberg worked on Three Kingsand I Heart Huckabees.
Wahlberg said he was at-tracted to Ward’s improbable
rags-to-riches story becauseit resembled his own.
‘‘I grew up 30 minutes fromwhere Micky was from,’’ hesaid. ‘‘I was a huge fan be-cause of how he won the titleagainst all odds, because ofhis relationship with hishometown of Lowell, becauseof his relationship with hismother and his siblings.
‘‘He’s from a family of ninekids, and I’m the youngest ofnine. The parallels are hardto miss.’’
The Fighter is scheduled for
a January 2011 release in Aust-
