The turbine, which stands 95m tall, is one of nine that are currently being erected at Klip-Heuvel. “The first turbine is nearly completed, with the four tower sections and the nacelle firmly in place,” says Gerald Fran- cis, site manager of Biotherm, the company developing the wind farm. The most technical of all the lifts, which includes the three blades and the hub, was completed yesterday. Eight of the nine turbine compo- nents have been delivered, with the last set of components due for deli- very by the end of the week. Cold commissioning and primary equipment testing will begin on the Eskom sub-station next week. “At the very latest, the wind farm should be fully operational and completed by the end of January,” says Francis. When asked how much energy will be fed into the national grid, Francis said the amount being fed into the grid is all wind dependent, but based on recent wind trends, the turbines should be quite capable of producing between 15 and 27 mW. This equates to between 2 500 and 3 000 homes be- ing provided with electricity from the wind farm. Sixth generation-farmers, broth- ers Pieter and Marius Beukes, with their father Izak, said the project is going well. Marius told the Gazette on Friday that the developers are still respecting their request of not working on Sundays. “It seems as though they are falling behind a lit- tle, though, and might push us to work on Sundays.” He said they would embark upon such a project again because wind farms are advantageous to the envi- ronment and also for the community due to the community trust that will plough funds back into the communi- ty within a 50 km radius of the farm. “At this stage it’s not clear what will be done for the community, but Bio- therm wants to bring about positive change and once the wind farm is up and running, the community trust will also kick off,” he said. Three more proposals are known to be on the table for the Overberg area. Biotherm is proposing a second wind farm with six turbines, to be known as the Dassiefontein wind farm. Caledon Wind will erect 31 tur- bines across three farms. The Lang- hoogte project will see a total of 44 turbines erected in Bot River, if ap- proved. Residents have expressed concern about the possible detrimental effect on tourism, bird life and the aesthet- ic appeal of the area. Not only are they concerned about the effects of the tall turbines, but also about con- tinuous noise pollution and a “shad- ow flicker” (a continuous shadow cast by the rotating blades). In addi- tion, 132 Kv overhead power lines will need to be put up for distribution of the energy being generated. Many residents believe their property va- lues will be adversely affected. Tower section four is lowered on top of section three. The turbines are visible when coming over Houw Hoek Pass and 25 kilometres from the Cape Town side. The towers sections that make up one turbine weigh in as follows (tonnage is round- ed off): Tower 1: 90 tons Tower 2: 75 tons Tower 3: 67 tons Tower 4: 58 tons The blades weigh approxi- mately 14 tons each. The hub weighs 30 tons and the nacelle 120 tons. Approximately 55 tons of steel are used in each foundation. Approximately 468 m³ cement is used in the foundation. The turbines are visible 25 km away on the Houw Hoek pass from the Cape Town side.

Overbergers sê misdaadstatistiekevertel nié die waarheid nieERIEKA ROUXEN ORA LAUBSCHER

Suid-Afrika se jaarlikse misdaadsta-tistieke is verlede maand bekend ge-maak.

Where doesthis lead to?

Renewable energyhas arrived in theOverbergand the turbine of the first wind farmhas beenerected and is set to starting turning in Janu-ary 2014. The country is facing power capacityproblems and has to find alternatives to theexisting coal and gas-fired power stations.ResidentsofBotRiver inparticularare,how-

ever, concernedabout the impact of thesewindturbines on the environment and tourism. Inaddition, they fear that property values maydecrease in line with the decreases of between25% and 50% seen elsewhere in the worldwherewind turbines have been installed. Ano-ther question that has been raised is whetheror not farm land with turbines will still beclassedasagricultural land, with theattendantrates and services benefits, or reclassified asindustrial land? And will the Cape Country Meander feel of

the Overberg still remain when “steel giants”are dotted across the landscape?Only timewill tell if theOverberg is entering

an era of green energy or one of a decline inproperty values and tourism.

Funny is what others do; what I do is naturalBeen snooping around a bit in “my” fishingvillage, collectinganecdotestoilluminatetheplace and salvage something from its recent, embarrassing failure to take stock of itselfin print. In the process I was again reminded that

true eccentrics do not regard themselves assuch; the locals just clamupwhen I ask themfor stories, simply because they do not seetheir exploits as noteworthy. I believe the lo-cals’ inability to measure their lives againstthose of inkommers is just due to their geo-graphical and cultural isolation, whetherelective or enforced.I recently kuiered with a few skippers,

trawlermen and the like, angling for a taleor two from these rugged, resourceful menwho wrest a dwindling, often dangerous liv-ing fromthesea.Theywere talkingaboutget-ting their various craft, ranging frommodesttrawlers to really big ocean-going ships, intoand out of harbours and off and onto moor-ings. Their boats all havemodern aids toma-noeuvrability:powerful, responsiveengines,

rudders that swing through 360 degrees andvarious thrusters thatcanmoveavessel side-ways, but mooring is never quite as simpleas it seems. Listening to their exploitspromptedme to sharewith them somemoor-ing anecdotes I had heard, thinking they Icould elicit some comment. The late yachtsman and journalist Brian

Lello once told me about the lone sailorArthur Holgate (father of the ubiquitousKingsley, I think), who had built a 20 metresteel schoonerandwassailing it single-hand-edandenginelessaroundtheworldinthelatesixties.Brian lived on an enchanted piece of

Langebaan Lagoon called Oesterwal, justsouth of Langebaan village.Holgate was on his way around the Cape

andBrian had invited him in for tea. Holgatesailedintothelagoononthetide, upachannelscarcely wider than his boat-length and an-chored off Oesterwal. After tea he upped an-chor, swung the boat around in the channeland touching nothing but water, sailed out

on the falling tide, jugglingwheel, sheets, anchor and hal-yards like a trapeze artist. The local salts remained indif-

ferent; I think sailing an engineless schoonerwasnomore inter-esting to them than a mild caseof insanity. A bit nonplussed, Ithen told them about a friendsailing his (likewise engineless)catamaran into theDurbanRoy-al Yacht Club’s busy marina af-ter nine months at sea. An east-erly wind was blowing straightinto the berth, so he came in ona broad reach and turned intothewindtoputtheberthdirectlyastern. He dropped sail and an-chor as the boat stopped and backed it neatlyinto the narrow berth by paying out the an-chor warp.“The members watching from the club-

house balcony applauded him,” I added. Myaudience remained unmoved. I suppose my

tales were so utterly unrelated to anythingthey knew, they simply could not comment. And that’s finally who they are: comforta-

ble and competent in their corner of the Uni-verse and largely indifferent to most things“different” out there. [email protected]

Cancer.Vive crew visit CaledonThe 60-strong Cancer.Vivecrew arrived on their Tri-umph motorcycles at TheCaledon Casino, Hotel, Spaand Entertainment on 12September for some muchneeded “R&R” and sharesome home truths about can-cer with the resort’s employ-ees in a lively show the fol-lowing day.

Caledon was one of the manystops that the crew, made up ofsurvivors, supporters, enter-tainersandmedia,madeduringtheir 2 300 km trek across thecountry to raise awareness ofthe so-called “shy cancers”which often go undetected dueto lack of knowledge, stigmaand cultural taboos.

The Cancer.Vive Annual Mo-torcycle Ride, one of the high-lights on the organisation’s calen-dar, aims to educate South Afri-cans about the most commoncancers affecting both men andwomen, and also to identify can-

cer patients and survivors to bepart of the PLWC Cancer BuddySupport System.

According to Paul Campbell, di-rector of operations and complexgeneral manager of Caledon Casi-no, the Cancer.Vive crew – and

their message – had an impact onthe resort’s staff and the schoolpupils who attended the roadshow. “Many people have lowawareness of the different typesof cancer that affect women andmen in this country, even the

mostcommontypes.Wewantedto inculcate a greater aware-ness of these cancers amongstour staff and the local commu-nity and encourage those whohave concerns to take action.Early detection is key to a goodprognosis and the Cancer. Viveteam helped impress the impor-tance of seeking medical helprather than waiting.

“For many people already af-fected by cancer, whether di-rectly or indirectly, the crew’smessage was reassuring; thatthere are people out there whohave been through it, survived, and are ready and willing tosupport others going throughsomething similar. We werethrilled that the crew includedus on their tour route.”After the show at The Caledon

the crew hosted a show at thePrestige Factory in Caledon andwent on to a community event atBredasdorp High School beforeheading off to their next stop inStruisbaai.

Allfour races will finish at the 6 000m²BKBLivestockCentre atMega Park, where a fun filled family day will bethe order of the day.This36-year-oldhistoricmarathon

got out of the blocks with 125 entriesin 1978 and at its height, in 2008, 3 786athletes participated. The averageannual number of participants isaround1757, although the2012-eventattracted only 1 429 entries. The rea-sonfor thedecline isprimarily finan-cial considerations, such as hightransport costs.Over the years, the marathon be-

came a national and internationalevent. A majority of the traditionalparticipants in the Foot of AfricaMarathon are people from previous-ly disadvantaged communities. Thisyear newmanagement and event or-ganisers plan an exciting familyevent.Located in the centre of the Over-

berg and only 40 km fromCapeAgul-has, thereisnomarathonmoresouthin Africa than the Foot of Africa.Fromtheperspectiveofaparticipantwho had been on amission to get herfirst fullmarathonunder the belt the“Voet” as the race is commonlycalled was a very tough unequalledscenic race.“I learned how tough but fantastic

this route is. Once you see the route

profile you will fall in love with it.Looking around during the race Isawwhat a spectacular areawewererunning through.

The first 15-odd kilometres wentthrough farmlands on gravel roadscomplete with cow pastures andtheir delightful smells . . . It alsomeant having to do a bit of sidestep-ping tomiss piles of dung in the road. All part of the fun I guess!“To one’s left you could see rolling

hillsheadinginthedirectionofAgul-has, with low clouds filling the val-leys and to the right was amountainrange. At some point we had to goover this – talk about being stuck be-tween a rock and ocean?“At 4:00 alarmclocks started going

off in various tents and the campsitewas a buzzing beehive. Just like this

year bus shuttles were available be-tween 4:00 and 5:00 to transport us tothe start and at 6:00 the traditionalfisheagle calledand the famous shot-gun went off when everyone startedrunning, very slowly.“With 28 of the 42.2 km to go we

turned right off the gravel road andonto a sandy path heading towardsthe dreaded mountain climb. It alsotook us away from the farmed areainto forest and fynbos vegetation. For the next few kilometres it wasfine white sand on unused paths andthenold jeep tracks, forcingus to runin two lines of single file up a hill. This for me is trail running and Iloved it! The great outdoors, beauti-ful scenery and the smell of Fynbos.“Good thing Idecided towearacap

– the sunwasbakingdownon the tar.At least theyhadwaterpointsalmostevery1 kmalongtheroad, whichwasa blessing. I’d been feeling reallystrong on the downhill into Napierbut had lost some of that confidenceas I hit the road. Suddenly I was onthe outskirts of Bredasdorp and Ipicked up pace a bit – 3 km togo . . .feeling great . . .2km and I hadto walk up the last hill. Those last2 km were the killer . . . Knowinghow close I was, wanting to get thelast stretch over with as quickly aspossible.Suddenly I was on the grasswith the finish line in sight andwhata sight to behold!“Will I be back this year? Oh most

definitely. And I am going to makea weekend of it and stay in Arnistonfor a few days to nurse the aches andpains. Will I do another marathon? For sure!Where: Bredasdorp, 2 hourdrive from Cape Town. Cost: R80 forthe 42.2km, R50 for the 21.1km, andR30 for the 10 km race.Visit www.topevents.co.za to en-
