  • FROM PRESIDENT DAVE'S DESK Comrades: As another term begins to wind down, I would like to thank the executive for the fine job that has been done. The Branch is financially stable and the membership continues to increase. This year, a membership survey was completed and, as a result, we saw a large increase in participation in Branch functions, especially the Poppy campaign. With elections coming in May, we will need to fill a few vacancies on the executive. To coin an old phrase, “we need a few good people”. If you want to change or improve something at the Branch, this is your chance. Finally, this year marks the 90th anniversary of Branch 76. Although the actual date is not until December, I would like to ►

see the celebration go on for the whole year. If you have any ideas, please bring them forward.

As of February 11, 2016, Branch 76 boasts a membership roster of 356 members.

Your annual membership fees are now overdue – $50.00 per year.

If you have not already done so, please contact the office to arrange

for payment. Maintain your continuous service.

    MARK YOUR CALENDARS

The deadlines for submissions to this year's THE LISTENING POST are: the Executive meetings of May 2016, and August 2016.

THE LISTENING POST With the increase in the postage rates, THE LISTENING POST costs quite a bit to mail out. If you have the means of receiving your newsletter electronically, please make sure that you provide us with your CURRENT e-mail address. If you can deliver to shut-in members, copies are available at the Branch. The e-mail address for the newsletter is: [email protected]

They shall grow not old as we that are left grow old. Age shall not weary them nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning.

    We shall remember them.

A huge thank you to Don and Adrienne Lemieux for the excellent job that they do in keeping things going for me in the bar area. This time around, Don and Adrienne climbed atop the fridge and thoroughly cleaned the compressor. As soon as he has time, Don will take apart

the Nevada Dispensing Machine so we can send it for re-haul. Again, thanks so much.

Andrew Makepeace Ladd III and Melissa

Gardner, both born to wealth and position, are

    childhood friends whose lifelong correspondence

begins with birthday party thank-you notes and

    summer camp postcards. Romantically attached,

they continue to exchange letters through the

boarding school and college years—where Andy

goes on to excel at Yale and law school, while

Melissa flunks out of a series of "good” schools.

Congratulations to the recent winners of the Branch and Zone Public Speaking Competitions held at Branch 76

Branch 76 will host the District Public Speaking Contest on Saturday April 2, 2016 starting at 1:00pm. Registration will take place from 12:00pm to 12:45pm

  • NEWS FROM THE LADIES AUXILIARY

Thank you to all who have continued to make our Friday dinners a huge success. It is only through the efforts of the many volunteers and, of course, our patrons that we were able to present the Branch with a cheque for $10,000.00 at the February General Meeting. Friday, April 1st will be a special evening as we host the Branch's first Dinner and Theatre Presentation with the production of A.R.Gurney's “Love Letters”. This Pulitzer-nominated play is a perennial favourite on Broadway. With dinners every second Friday, the Ladies Auxiliary has instituted other fund-raising events. Up and coming are: Saturday, March 12th – Ladies Auxiliary St. Paddy's Dance – 8pm – $8.00 a ticket Sunday, April 17th – Sunday FunDay with a Hawaiian theme – details to follow Tuesday, May 10th – Annual elections

Helping Homeless Veterans Branch 76 has established a “Leave the Streets Behind” committee in an effort to assist local homeless veterans. Community agencies are now involved in our coalition which has the goal of identifying homeless veterans and assisting them through existing Legion programs and our Branch Poppy Fund. For more information or to assist in this important endeavour please contact Jim Young, committee Chair.
