In an effort to help keep our children safe and still have fun, Trunk or Treat is back. On October 29th 6:00-8:00 pm come out and join the fun. After the kiddos visit all of the trunks they are encouraged to come in and walk the halls in costume where a few residents on each floor will also have treats to hand out. So, dress the kids up in costumes and come have a good time. Hot dogs, chips, apple cider and cookies will be available. If you are interested in being part of the fun but don’t have children we have a place for you too. Dress your car up and become one of the trunkers! Citizens will provide the candy for each car. Sign up outside the Activities office.

The month of October has always in the past caused us to have visions of crisp, cool

weather and changing leaf colors. However, the end of last month was pretty hot for late fall.

Who knows what kind of weather this month will present?

There are a few significant dates in October. Some of them will be

discussed in this issue.

On the 7th the war in Afghanistan began in 2001. Seems to me that we’ve been at war

since I was in high school. Come to think of it, that was Vietnam, and when have we been

without war since then? What a waste.

Boss’s Day is on the 16th. This occasion was started by Patricia Bays Naroski,

an employee at State Farm Insurance Company in Deerfield, Illinois, who registered the

holiday with the United States Chamber of Commerce in 1958.

She picked this date because it was her father’s birthday. She wanted to

show appreciation for her boss and other bosses. She also hoped to improve

relationships among other employees with their bosses. The popularity of this

holiday was so well received that it was then celebrated not only in the United States but also

in Canada, Lithuania, and Romania.

The next historical event we will note occurred on the 25th in 1983. On this date and the

following 4 days, the United States invaded Grenada, a country 100 miles North of

Venezuela. The mission was code named Operation Urgent Fury and resulted in an American

victory within days. President Reagan claimed that one reason the invasion took place was to

rescue American students in Grand Anse. This invasion was somewhat controversial for

Americans; they were not certain that this invasion was justified. President Reagan held his

own in this regard.

Finally, the last holiday of the month is Halloween on the 31th. Now, do you have your

costume ready? Hope that your September was pleasant and not too hot. We’ll see you next

month.

Telephone Assurance Program

Do you live alone? Are you recuperating from a hospital stay or rehab? Do you want to feel secure that someone is checking on you

each day? If you answered Yes to any of these questions, then the Telephone Assurance Program can be of service to you. T.A.P. is a free service provided by Citizens Care and Rehabilitation Center and a group of Auxiliary Volunteers. T.A.P. is a daily person-to-person telephone call for individuals who have medical problems but wish to maintain their independence by remaining in their home. The participant who registers with the program provides a medical history and emergency contact or someone willing to consent to the “Good Neighbor Program.” The duties are to check on the well-being of the participant when the volunteer is unable to contact you by tele-phone. A return call to the T.A.P. volunteer is required by the good neighbor. State, county, and local police agencies partici-pate in the program as an emergency back up in the event the participant and the good neighbor cannot be reached. If this occurs, an officer will make a check on the residence and call the volunteer with information. All information received by T.A.P. is kept confidential. The participant will also receive a birthday card from the T.A.P. volunteers. If interested, please contact Janet McDonald at 410-942-2112
