The town of Bourne lies on the intersec-tion of the A15 and the B1193. Originally known as Bourn, the town takes its name from the Anglo-Saxon meaning of “water” or “stream”. The earliest recorded docu-ment that references Brunna, meaning stream is from 960 and the town even ap-peared in William the Conqueror’s great survey of England record The Domesday Book albeit under the guise of Brune. The first railway in Bourne was the Earl of Ancaster estate railway which ran from Little Bytham through Grimsthorp to Edenham, and was a very important junction on the Victorian railway system. Improved communication to the town al-lowed a bottled water industry to devel-op, for the mineral water bottled locally from the exceptionally fine quality natural springs and to provide deliveries to the towns gas works of coal and other such natural resources.

Later Bourne developed a station which resided on both the Great Northern line and the Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway, these both finished service in 1959. During Roman times the Bourne-Morton canal (formely known as the Bourne old EA) joined to the sea to allow boat traf-fic to enter the town via the Wash Coast and Spalding. In 1860 the junction from the EA to the river Glen was replaced with a sluice gate operating system which stopped the flow of commercial vehicles along the waterway.

The success of the water bottling brought forth many more rural based industries, many that still contribute to the towns economy today, such as food preparation and packaging. The town itself boasts a packed high street of shops, pubs, garden centres and specialist suppliers all within easy reach of the town centre. Bourne is made up of over 6000 house-holds with a population boardering on the 15,000 mark, and the district has a whole has one of the fastest growing housing markets. Bourne also holds a staggering number of well known names as part of its rich heritage. It is heavily believed that Bourne is the birthplace of 11th century, Anglo-Saxon leader, Hereward the Wake.

Other notable names from Bourne’s past in-clude Robert Mannyng (Robert de Brunne) the man responsible for taking the speech of ordinary people during the late twelve hundreds and early thirteen hundreds and putting it into a more understandable form, his life work the Handlyng Synne is recog-nised as a unique glimpse into the thoughts and language of his contemporaries. Another is Robert Harringtown, the man from which the street takes his name, who, according to legend walked from Bourne to London in search of his fortune. Upon the time of his death he had seemed most successful in his endeavours and he left dwelling establishments in the Leytonstone area for the Bourne citizens he had left be-hind at the beginning of his journey.

More recent names to emerge from Bourne are Raymond Mays, the racing driver who opened his workshops in the town and developed the revolutionary BRM which would go on to win the 1962 world cham-pionships. Blake Fielder-Civil, after drop-ping out of Bourne Grammar when he was sixteen in 1994 would go on to notoriously be the on/off partner/husband of contro-versial pop sensation Amy Winehouse!

Help for Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome Sufferers

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) affects one in four women of childbearing age. Many sufferers are unaware they have the condition because it is often misdiagnosed as Pre-menstrual Stress (PMS). PCOS is a hormonal imbalance linked to insulin resistance and is thought to be caused by the ovaries failure to produce the correct balance of hormones. Symp-toms can include weight gain, irregular/non-existent periods, fertility problems, acne, excess hair, fatigue, depression, mood swings, breast, abdominal and joint pain, dizziness, fainting and cravings for carbohydrates. Certain medication prescribed to treat PCOS symp-toms can deplete the body of essential vitamins. Re-search by Dietcare found that weight gain is a real problem for PCOS sufferers as they have a different metabolism to none sufferers.

There is no cure for PCOS, but suferers can dra-matically reduce their symptoms by making diet and lifestyle changes. Standard diets do NOT work long term for PCOS sufferers; they need a tailored plan to suit them individually. Organic food is strongly advised but if this is not possible, washing fruit and vegetables in a solution of vinegar and water (1part vinegar to 12 parts water) then rinsing well in filtered water can help. Processed foods and ‘ready meals’ should be avoided because of the additives. Canned drinks lined with aluminium should be omitted; use glass containers for drinking, stay clear of drinks in plastic bottles and avoid microwaving food in plastic containers. Dietcare’s unique PCOS weight manage-ment course has helped thousands of sufferers lose weight, reduce unpleasant symptoms and even over-come fertility problems. Since the PCOS launch in 2002 Dietcare specially trained diet advisors have helped 297 women conceive, naturally, by offering one-to-one tailored diets, motivation and counselling. Online support is also available. Dietcare’s PCOS book “The Road to Recovery” is out soon.

For more information visit www.dietcare-peterborough.com

The Dietcare weight management programme will soon be available throughout Peterborough and South Lincolnshire. It is safe and effective for all ages and medical conditions.

When everything else is stripped away, accountancy is about numbers. Fledgling accountancy firm, Winham Hughes ded to stand out from the rest, Sally Winham and Paul Hughes had to offer something extra. ‘More than just numbers’ was a phrase they hit on very quickly as it’s about providing a full accoun-tancy and taxation service and then going several steps further.

Facing redundancy following the closure of Baker Tilly’s Peterborough Offi ce, Sally & Paul realised their passion in their profession was more than just those numbers but was about building relation-ships with clients, understand-ing them and their business. A year ago, Winham Hughes

opened for business in mod-ern, purpose-built offices in Commerce Road, Lynch Wood Peterborough, which were secured for them by Barker Storey Matthews.

Starting Winham Hughes in the middle of the deepest recession for a generation was, says Paul, “a calculated risk”. “We were nervous but we had a solid background - we’re accountants, we’d done the maths!” Paul thinks busi-nesses in Peterborough have weathered the recession relatively well. “People have worked hard to reduce costs to save jobs and survive,” said Paul.

“As the economy picks up we will see fitter, leanerbusinesses in better shape for

the future.” “Local knowledge is a valuable asset our clients can call on. Peterborough is an interesting place to oper-ate covering the entire spec-trum of business from starts up’s to regional offi ces of multi- nationals.

We can add value to our cli-ent’s business by helping them identify potential pitfalls – our Management Information ser-vice forinstance gives real time fi gures which we can overlay on our local knowledge to create an accurate picture which helps forecasting and planning”.

Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps

Release Date: September 24th

Shia LaBouf has been in rather a lot of huge films in the last couple of years, and he now features in the se-quel to the very popular Wall Street alongside Michael Douglas. Shia has certainly come a long way since the days of Even Stevens…Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps follows pretty much straight on after the first one, I won’t say anymore though as it might get a bit confusing for those of you who

haven’t seen it, but what I will say is for those of you who love your financial films is that this is the one for you!

On a final note and a relief to those of you who enjoyed the first one, director Oliver Stone is again on board so I am sure you will love this one as much as you did the first!

The Other Guys

Release Date: September 1st

The other guys features the awesome combination of Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg. These two actors have both been in some of the best films ever made, from Mark’s perfor-mance in The Departed to Will Ferrell’s outstanding efforts in Anchorman. Combine these two together in a film and with no doubt you will get a spectacular outcome!New York City detectives Allen

Gamble (Ferrell) and Terry Hoitz (Wahlberg) both look up to their fellow detectives P.K. High-smith (Samuel L. Jackson) and Christopher Danson (Dwayne Johnson) as they always seem to crack the hardest cases. Sadly for Allen and Terry their career isn’t going to great as they can‘t really crack any, luckily though there is a light at the end of the tunnel, as they just so happen to find New York city’s biggest crime yet!Full of action, comedy, and a brilliant cast, this is certainly a must watch!

Resident Evil AfterlifeRelease Date : September 10th

It’s been a while since the Resident Evil franchise has been on our screens, and now it is back. Alice (Milla Jovovich), now in a world full of zombies must once again help get the remaining survivors to safety, on her quest she bumps into her old friend Claire Redfield (Ali Larter). Claire promises that if they get to Los Angeles, they will once again be safe. Things quickly turn sour when they hit Los Angeles as when they arrive they discover that the

whole town is infested with zombies.A new addition to the cast is that of Ali Larter, who plays Claire Redfield. Ali recently found fame in Heroes and now features strongly in this one, hopefully, she can bring her unique talent to the table and help give the Resident Evil movies a good name again! This latest Resident Evil instalment does have something that the previous titles did not - the power of 3D, yes it has been in most of the films released in the last year, and it really is not showing any signs of stopping.

and Lark Energy, has reduced the CO2

emissions of a bungalow in Bourne, by retrofitting it with a range of energy

saving and renewable energy technologies.

thermal hot water system, a mechanical ventilation and heat recovery system, 1kw Photovoltaic panels,

floor insulation and a water saving bathroom

suite.

over 50%.

Solar Power installation at Lark Energy’s head office

Lark Energy has just completed a 10 kilowatt photovoltaic so-lar panel system installation on its offices at Bourne. Solar electric-ity systems use photovoltaic (PV) cells to capture the sun’s energy. The cells convert the sunlight into electricity, which can be used to run household appli-ances and lighting. The newly introduced Feed in tariff scheme allows the owner to claim money from the Government for the generation of the electricity, as well as enjoying cheaper electricity for the property. The completed PV array is now providing power for the Group’s offices, helping to reduce energy costs and CO2 emissions. It also provides a reference site to demonstrate the potential of PV to Lark Energy’s partners and clients. The whole PV system was sup-plied by local company, Eco Building Products Ltd in Market Deeping. For further information visit either

Considering our economic climate, what destinations are giving travellers the best value for money right now?

The world is in recession, not just the UK and thankfully the Pound is strengthening against most major currencies and this really helps us all and we are now seeing far more competitive prices. Many of our properties are putting out superb offers and airlines are also now reacting as they need to fill air-craft. We therefore have offers available to most of our destinations so our advice is to give us a call and we will come up with some very competitive and exciting ideas! For example we currently have some great deals to places like Mauritius and The Maldives with prices for 7 nights at 5-star resorts from around £1,200 per person, which is excellent value.

How long have you been involved in travel?

I started work at Thomas Cook way back when I was just 18 so have now done nearly 30 years!! The rest of the team at Inspirational Travel have also averaged over 20 years each giving us plenty of experience!

What are the current most popular destinations for long haul travellers?

We are selling places like The Maldives and Mauritius well, particularly for honeymooners or escapists, and then Kenya has had a bit of a resurgence and of course South Africa is very much in vogue following the World Cup. Two-centre itineraries also prove very popular whereby we offer the excitement of a safari and some exploration combined with relaxation and pampering at an exotic beach resort. Combinations such as South Africa combined with Mauritius and Kenya or Tanzania combined with Zanzibar work very well with romance and excitement all rolled into one superb itinerary! We have also done a few weddings recently in South Africa, including one that actually took place in the bush at a safari lodge with wildlife wandering past the proceedings as natural invited guests!!

How can long haul be child friendly?

The key thing when travelling with children is to try and avoid destinations that have a massive time difference to ours. We can then organise lots of exciting and interesting things for families includ-ing safaris with their own rangers, walking with Maasai warriors, cultural visits to local villages with involvement in activities with local children such as a game of football, and then lots of exciting activi-ties such as horse-riding, sailing, cycling, fishing and so on. We also have a lot of properties that run very professional kid’s clubs so that parents can have quality adult-time and simply relax.

What makes IT different from high street travel agents?

A travel agent is a retailer selling lots of operators products whereas we are a licensed tour opera-tor constructing our own holidays - I guess the easiest analogy is that we are like a car manufacturer making and selling our own cars as opposed to a showroom selling every make and model!. Being tailor-made specialists means we effectively start with a blank canvas with each customer and create a bespoke itinerary for them. We are specialists in the areas that we sell and therefore have a depth of knowledge in these areas that is difficult to beat.

Is your first child about to start school this year? Who is more anxious about it – you or them? The first day of school is significant in so many ways; your child is growing up and you are not personally planning their days. With a healthy sense of expectation, spend the lovely long summer holidays working towards a smooth transition.

Practice and expectation - Your child will probably have been to the school a few times to visit and even their experiences at preschool, nursery or away from you with friends or family, will have helped to get them used to time away from you. Further group activities over the summer, such as story time at the library will help, with having someone else instructing the children.

Lunchtime and PE at school can be wholly time consuming. PE itself may only last 10 minutes as the rest of the time is spent getting changed! Have a practice at home. Try out packed lunch ideas too, even if it is a case of lunching at home from the lunch bag. You can try out tastes, variety and those all those messy yoghurt pots too.

Positivity - Put your own fears and any negative views on the school experience aside. Chat to parents with children already at school; your concerns may be commonplace and you can seek reassurance.

Engage your child in buying supplies for school such as uniform, water bottle, lunchbag…and after that make sure you sew their names in and show them! They’ll be proud, even if your sewing skills aren’t up to much.

Rest - Move into a realistic bedtime routine with a couple of weeks to go, although on their first day expect a very bright and early start!

Music Scene The world runs away with Josh Ritter American singer/songwriter Josh Ritter has come a long way since he took to the stage solo in Ireland performing at Open Mic nights and selling copies of his self-released first CD. This year has seen the release of his sixth studio album, ‘So Runs the World Away’, which was typically released in Ireland first before its worldwide release. “It happened for me first in Ireland.

He was born in the city of Moscow, Idaho in 1976 and admits to not experiencing much music until he was 17. After hearing a song on one of his parents’ records, Bob Dylan’s duet with Johnny Cash on ‘Girl from the North Country’ from the ‘Nashville Skyline’ album, he decided that writing and performing music was for him. He bought himself a guitar and began writing his own material.

In addition to working hard creating material for his albums and live shows, Josh has also been writing his first novel, ‘Bright’s Passage’, which will be published in the summer of 2011.

As anyone who has listened to Josh Ritter’s albums will tell you, his song writing and performing skills con-tinue to grow and impress and the opportunity to experience this live should not be missed. The six dates in September include Nottingham Albert Hall on Sunday 19th and London’s Barbican on Thursday 23rd.

Closer to home, Shakedown have dropped their usual ‘Blues’ suffix for a concert with a difference when Claude Bourbon appears at St Kyneburgha Church, Castor, Peterborough on Thursday, September 16. Claude is a classically trained French guitar virtuoso who performs an eclectic mix of jazz, blues, Spanish and Medieval music. Tickets cost £15 in advance, £16.00 PayPal and £17.00 on the door. For further details of this and the blues artists appearing at Castor later in the year visit the website: www.shakedownblues.co.uk
