The challenge

• A new media genre is no small aim. We have to:

– Build new technologies– Understand emerging markets– Conceive and demonstrate pilot

productions– Evaluate our experiments

objectively

• To do all this we have brought together a very diverse and talented team

The Market

• To invent new, potentially profitable genres of media for broadband, we need to understand the market well. There are three particular aspects we need to investigate:

– The availability of technology to support the genre

– The propensity of the production industry to embrace the creation of new genres

– The propensity of consumers to engage with interactive forms of content

• NM2 is studying this market honestly and rationally; trying to understand what constrains and defines the opportunity

Productions

• Every new genre needs its pilots. Before Pixar made it mainstream with Toy Story they released a series of “shorts” revealing what could be achieved using the new computer based animation techniques.

• NM2 is developing seven pilot productions looking at how interactivity and re-configurability can be used with news, documentary and drama.

Technology

• Just as Books needed the printing press and Cinema needed cameras so the new genre will need new tools.

• NM2 will build tools that support both the production and delivery of new production pilots.

Evaluation

• We have to be brutally honest. At every turn NM2 seeks to obtain feedback, from media professionals and from the general public.– What’s good?– What could be done better?

• We value feedback on all aspects of our work – on the tools and the experimental pilot productions themselves -recognising it is a helpful gift on our journey.

• NM2 is attempting to enable this vision using a multi-disciplinary team from across Europe

• NM2 will create experimental pilot productions that illustrate new media forms

• NM2 will develop tools that allow the new media forms to be efficiently created

• NM2 will use objective evaluation of markets and of people to refine and improve its work to better position the project to profitably address need of its target audience
