THE REFINERY

PAMP’s independent, government-sworn assayers of precious metals work in accordance with the Swiss Precious Metals Control Law (LCMP) and strictly follow the legislation and directives issued by the Central Office for Precious Metals Control in Bern (BCMP). And so, as per Swiss law, sworn assayers operate autonomously, without any corporate or external influences, assuring impartial and accurate assaying results.

Gold, silver or Platinum Group Metals (PGM) – each requires unique assaying procedures. Truly state-of-the-art, the PAMP Assay Laboratory provides its clientele with a comprehensive range of services that includes fire, spectrometric, ICP, X-ray, and chemical assays. All material arriving at the refinery, whether doré or recycled, is melted and sampled and retested as often as necessary throughout refining and fabrication processes.

PAMP’s Assay Laboratory is certified as conforming to the general competency requirements to carry out tests and/or calibrations, including sampling, of the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO / IEC ‘17025 : 2005’ Accredited).

In synergy with the Assay Laboratory, PAMP’s refinery operations are the very core of the company’s activities, servicing not only a global bullion clientele but also many industrial sectors whose products and services rely upon the distinctive properties of precious metals. The science behind the refinement process is as unique as the metal treated. Uncommonly efficient, the factory’s refining capacity exceeds 450-metric tons for gold, 600-metric tons for silver and 50-metric tons for PGM per year.

PAMP refines gold-based materials from diverse industries, primarily the mining and the jewelry and watch sectors. With fine metal content determined, the material is converted into anodes that are then positioned within electrolytic cells where the gold is separated from other elements. That treatment results in the deposit of gold sponge in purities ranging between 99,99% and 99,999%. Once purity has been accurately established, the sponge is washed, dried and then transformed into a variety of products, including grains, bars, strips, rods, wire or other products clients may request.

The refining division also treats silver-based materials received largely from mines, the silverware industry and other industrial sectors, as well as from silver recovered during refining of gold-based materials. Like gold, once the fine metal content has been determined, the material is converted into anodes held within electrolytic cells for separation from other elements. Resultant silver crystal deposits range in purity from 99,99% to 99,999%, which may then form an array of products that meet our clients’ specific needs.

The refining of Platinum Group Metals (PGM) involves highly complex chemical processes specific to composition. The application of the appropriate substances, and the subsequent chemical reactions, facilitates the separation of PGM from other elements. PAMP also produces various alloys of platinum and palladium for the jewelry and watch industries, as well as other alloys requested for advanced industrial applications. Our specialized laboratory is dedicated to the production of PGM-based compounds, sponge and grains while pursuing research and development activities essential to the field.
