Uma beleza natural muito rica em biodiversidade com

espcies endmicas de flora e fauna que foi classificada

como Patrimnio da Humanidade pelas UNESCO em

1999.

A Floresta Laurissilva cobre uma rea de 15,000 hectaresdos quais 12,000 so Reserva Natural. O Governo Regio-

nal da Madeira comeou a criar em Outubro de 1982

estas reas protegidas para a conservao de vrias esp-

cies em vias de extino. Quando a Madeira foi desco-

berta em 1419 quase toda a ilha estava coberta de vegeta-

o. Os primeiros colonos pegaram fogo a grande parte

da Madeira para fazer terra de cultivo. Devido ao seu

clima ameno a grande maioria da populao escolhe hoje

a vertente sul para viver e a floresta original ainda pode

ser vista nas encostas a norte e nos vales mais profundos.

A natural beauty filled with a rich biodiversity of species

of endemic flora and fauna, classified a World Nature

Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1999. The Laurissilva

Forest covers 15,000 hectares, 12,000 of which are in a

Nature Reserve. Protected areas were created to conser-

ve various species in danger of extinction .

When Madeira was discovered in 1419 most of its land

was forested. The settlers set fire too much of the Island

to clear the land for farming. Today due to its pleasant

climate most of the population is located in the south but

the original forest is still found in the northern slopes

and deep valleys of the island.

Owing to their proximity to the sea, most restaurants specialise in

fish and shellfish dishes, of which grilled limpets, octopus and

shrimp dishes, tuna steaks and black scabbard fish fillets .Another

irresistible meal is the beef kebab, on laurel wood skewers, served

with fried corn and the typical bolo-do-caco, with garlic butter.
