Today and every day is a day to be thank- ful for; friends, family and all the good things that bless our lives. I, for one, am blessed to have a wonderful family, in- cluding the world’s cutest and greatest grandchildren ever (no bias here!), who have been known to draw me away from my life in central Ohio. Not only was this the cause of my ab- sence at the October meeting, but I will be out of town for this month’s meeting as well. I’ll be back, but in the mean- time, Kathy Kern has offered to chair the meeting in my place. Thanks, Kathy! The November meeting is an important one, as it is the month that we elect Officers and Board Members for the com- ing year. Retirements include Debi Garrett as Secretary, Ann Gillman with the website, Bren- da Easley of membership, also I will be stepping down from the Board. We all have served for many years and, with other mat- ters vying for our attention, it’s just time. But no worries, you’ll still find us helping out, especially at Volksfest! This presents a fabulous opportunity for fresh faces and new direction on the Board. A couple of members (and you know who you are) have already expressed an interest in serv- ing. It’s not a big time commit- ment. The Board meets 3-4 times a year and/or communicates by email. Members take turns chairing a monthly meeting and writing the lead newslet- ter article. Our long-time club members are getting older and the club dynamic is changing. Change isn’t necessarily bad. I am definitely looking forward to what’s in store for the COV- VC. You won’t want to miss the November meeting. At a recent Board Meet- ing, we agreed that we final- ly need to pull the trigger on those long-awaited COVVC window stickers, so look for a newly designed window stick- er and maybe even a magnetic sticker, in time for Christmas! Save the Date business cards will also soon be available for Volksfest 2018. Stay tuned for web site updates, membership updates and more. Speaking of membership, for many of us it’s almost time to renew for 2018. You can do so at the next two meetings, by mail or via PayP- al. Don’t forget! I’d like to shout out a THANK-YOU to Bill Hunts- man for hosting another Mar- ion Tour, an event that many members look forward to every year. Fortunately the SNOW and rain stopped as everyone enjoyed the traditional lunch at El Campesino. Unfortunate- ly that same weather kept all but two vintage VW’s tucked away snugly in their garages. As usual, Bill had tables of door prizes to give away. Bill treated us to a tour of the Hu- ber Machinery Museum. Amazing how important the Marion, Ohio manufacturing industry was to our county’s development! This month’s newslet- ter promises to be packed with articles of interest, so I will sign off by saying “Thanks”. I’ve had a blast over the years at the head table and I’m excit- ed for the future. I am thank- ful for the people I’ve met and the friendships I have enjoyed in the COVVC over the past 20+ years. I am honored to have been friends with those that we have recently lost. As a few of the founding members of the COVVC, we aksed for a little space this month to pass on some thoughts. With the upcoming Jan-uary Banquet at the Hofbrau-haus House, the COVVC will wrap up our 27th year, and will start planning for year 28. Let those numbers sink in a bit, and look back over your life over the last 27 years. I bet there have been many changes during that time. As we head into year 28, we have reached a criti-cal point with our club. The following board members/of-ficers have decided to step down and take a much de-served rest: Brenda Agan-Board Member, Brenda Eas-ley-Membership, Debi Garrett, Board Member and Secretary, Ann Gillman-Webmaster and Brenda Perin-Back up Secre-tary. At the November meeting we will have nominations for

those positions. Be thinking how YOU can step up and fill one of those spots. None are difficult, and you will have the full support of the outgo-ing person to guide you along. Besides those positions, we head into 2018 with Volks-fest 28 on the horizon. Ryan Cisco has done an amazing job of recruting volunteers for the show the last few years, after taking over from Mari-lyn Allen, who had that job for MANY years! Talk about a thankless position! We had many spots left unfilled at Volksfest 27, which meant many folks pulled a double (or more?!) stint to keep the ball rolling. Be thiking how YOU can step up this year and help out your fellow club members. Many of the core group of volunteers have nev-er been able to simply walk around the show and enjoy the amazing selection of cars and talk to the always interest-

ing owners. All it takes is a 1 or 2 hour contribution at some point through out the day. Readers of the Samba will be aware that several large East Coast shows are no longer around, as the people that ran them for many years, have simply burnt out. Clos-er to home, us old timers will remember the Milan show in Michigan which is no longer with us.

The strength of our club and our show is YOU! YOU will help determine the course that the COVVC will take. With the changes ahead, all thoughts and ideas are welcome. Meet-ing format changes (meeting every other month, meeting on weekends, meetings simply a social gathering), Volksfest changes (more volunteers will be needed or Volksfest may be a wrap).

It is up to YOU!

Welcome back everyone!!

The toy I’m sharing with each of you this month is one which got away from me recently on a popular Internet auction site. I’m still kind of bummed I wasn’t able to purchase the toy; but I’m sure the lucky bidder has a special place in his or her collection for this neat little toy. Oh well-may-be someday. However, I thought it would still be neat to write about for this month’s article.

This toy is a light turquoise colored split win-dow VW bus produced by the Bandai Toy Company of Tokyo, Japan during the early 1960’s. This friction operated toy is constructed of tin and is about 7.5 inches long. The toy represents a live-stock truck and is based on an early 1960’s VW bus. Another neat feature of the bus is the rear top gate flips up to allow entry into the rear cargo area. I can just imagine being 10 years old again and pretending loading your livestock up for the drive to the market.

This VW bus is as rare as they get. I’ve never seen another example of this toy in my 30 years of col-lecting. The Big Book of Tin Toy Cars also doesn’t list the toy. Con-

sider yourself very lucky if you find the box with the toy. Most boxes never make it past day one once the child removes the toy from the box. The bus which was up for sale on the Internet auction was in near mint condition with a box. Now hold on to your pants for the selling price. Once the dust cleared from all the last minute bidding, the selling price was in excess of $750. Along with myself; seems like a few other indi-viduals would rather invest in VW toys opposed to gold and silver. At least you can play with your investment and they don’t weigh as much !!

Until next month Happy Toy Hunting !!

vW TeCH...Tips, Tricks, Tools & Repairs

This has been a frequent topic in my shop lately with my being a part of installing or spec-cing filter pumps on 3 split busses in the last month. VW chose not to use an oil fil-ter on most US des-tined air cooled engines to cut costs, probably. This allows the oil to get quite dirty and calls for a more frequent service interval in addition to increased engine wear. Later T1 Mexican en-gines had these pumps from the factory so if you have a Mexican Beetle or a Mexican replacement engine you’d have a filterpump from the factory. There are differences in opinion about their advantages and disadvantages regarding oil temps, with some guys stating they cause in-creased oil temperatures. This could (in theo-ry) be caused by the filter being located in the warm air outlet area of the engine, but I debate that. Oil temps on the highway could be 250F or higher so for this to be applicable the ambient air temp in the hot air outlet area would have to be higher than this, which I doubt is the case. Being that VW used them on millions of later engines I’m sold about the advantages, I’ve been using aftermarket filter pumps exclusively for over 35 years now so I’m no stranger to them. There are many available on the mar-ket but the one I have used for years is the

CB Performance PN 1791/1792 model. Whether you need a 1791 or 1792 de-pends on whether you have an early flat cam gear or a

late dished cam gear. Most engines I’ve torn down have the flat gear, even if they’re later and are supposed to have the dished gear (dual port T1 en-gines). I stock both so it’s not a big deal to me which one it has.

Another issue is whether your muffler/exhaust system will allow the pump to fit, stock mufflers have a heat riser tube on one side of the muffler which allows the intake manifold heat to exit the system. Most mufflers have this tube on the right side of the muffler which is good, but some have it on the left side of the muffler, which is where the filter pump mounts. If it is on the left side it interferes with the pump and will not allow it to fit. If you’re using an aftermar-ket header you’re “on your own”, so you’ll have to judge by looking whether you have room for the filterpump or not. I have used one on several header style systems without issues. Another minor issue is using the correct filter, of course. You can buy the filter from CB but this is not convenient after the initial in-stallation. All full flow oil filtration systems must have a bypass valve in the system to flow oil when the oil is cold. Some engines have it in the filter header, others have it in the filter itself, I use a Napa 1374 filter which I am sure has a bypass that will flow the full volume of the pump. The bypass is there because you can’t push cold oil through filter paper, so all en-gines do not receive filtered oil when they are cold, only when the oil warms up. I’ll warn you about a huge problem I had in 1986, I installed a filterpump on a sandrail engine I built in about 1981. Continued Pg 8....

ZunDfOLge 2018 First to keep everyone reading, NO I am not going anywhere (unless someone wants it!) The Zundfolge Editor is filled for another year.

As you have read in the other articles this month our club is in a bit of a transition, with many officers retiring. We are looking to get current members more involved and also attract new members to the wonderful world of the COVVC. While we never want to lose our long time mem-bers help and input, we also should honor their years of devotion with some relaxation time. For 2018 we are planning some ‘innovations’ to maybe increase our electronic presence and participa-tion. This will not only include updating and using the club facebook and website more, also more email communication and things like the sign-up genius. Using Paypal & Credit cards for an online store, renewals, and even the show are all possibilities. Another aspect your board has discussed is club merchandise, activites outside of meetings, and of course recruiting new mem-bers to keep our traditions alive and well. The club’s main source of communication thus far has been the monthly Zundfolge so it too will need a few adjustments for 2018. Some items we have considered may be a ‘member of the month’ just a

short profile, maybe your favorite VW story, a picture of your car? You don’t even have to write it, just answer a few questions! We also are looking for a volunteer to write a water cooled article This may start as occasionally, but could grow with members’ inter-est. If you’d like to volunteer for that, just con-tact me. We also have a new tech advisor coming on board, so there may be a few new tricks & tips to share in the new year. Of course we are open to other ideas too! We want to keep current members engaged; please see the survey in this month’s issue! We also would love to attract new members and value their input, although we have been ‘vintage’, we must continue to evolve as a club to remain rel-evant and to ensure the future remains bright. Please send me your ideas, stories, events & pic-tures to keep the Zundfolge and the COVVC inter-esting for another great year!

vW TeCH...COnTinueD I ran this engine and pump with a specific filter for several years before selling it to my bud-dy, who changed the oil and filter the night be-fore we went on vacation to Cape Hatteras, NC. He went to the local parts store and asked for the filter I recommended, but they did not have one and crossed the PN into a Fram filter. Unfortu-nately, the Fram did not have the proper bypass valve inside it. We towed our sandrails 700 miles to the beach and his engine spun a rod bearing immediately upon starting on the beach. Seeing the orange filter I immediately had suspicions this was the source of the problem. Right there on the beach I removed the filter, looked in the big hole, and saw the filter material had been crushed in from hydraulic pressure due to the

lack of a bypass valve. The problem wasn’t really a bad filter but a bad cross reference where a filter equipped without a bypass valve was sub-stituted for a filter with a bypass valve. To make a long story shorter, Fram paid parts and labor for a new short block in the car, but this still didn’t help the ruined vacation or my opinions. I still cringe at orange filters and have not used one in 30+ years. Anyway, I like filterpumps and I suggest you consider them. Cold weather is coming so start thinking about what winter upgrades you’re going to do to your cars. I’m still in the process of finishing the rat bus so you’ll be hearing more about that soon. Have fun!

Jennifer Sichel, May 23, 1955 - October 25, 2017

We are saddened to report that our Treasurer Todd Sichel has lost the love of his life, Jennifer, to cancer. An active club member usually behind the scenes, Jennifer also worked alongside Todd at their business, Accurate Accounting and Financial Services and was his right-hand woman in keeping the money straight at Volksfest. Jennifer also leaves behind a son, James Travis Hall. Jennifer was always in a good mood with a pleasant comment to anyone she met.

We are grateful that her battle is over, and she rests in peace, but she will be dearly missed. God Bless Todd and Travis during this difficult time.
