Sydney Airport plan foresees 65.6 million pax a year A new master plan for Sydney Airport – the third plan in less than a decade – foresees internaonal aircraſt using the airport’s exisng domesc terminals to cope with an enormous increase in internaonal visitor arrivals. Master Plan 2039, a 20-year blueprint for Australia’s busiest airport, was released in preliminary draſt form on Monday. It replaces the previous Master Plan 2033 (released in February 2014), which in turn replaced the previous 2009 master plan. The latest version forecasts that Sydney Airport passenger numbers will rise by 51% to reach 65.6 million in 2039 – and that’s despite the ancipated opening of Western Sydney Airport at Badgerys Creek in 2026. Construcon on Badgerys Creek is starng this year. The main driver behind Sydney Airport’s passenger growth will be internaonal travellers, who are forecast to nearly double over the next 20 years to 31.5 million. To help cater for this, an “integrated operaons precinct” at the exisng T2 and T3 domesc terminals will handle internaonal flights. Despite that, the main entry and exit point for internaonal arrivals and departures will remain the T1 internaonal terminal. “Internaonal passengers, who contribute the most to the NSW and Australian economies, will be the main driver of growth and, by 2039, the mix of internaonal and domesc passengers is expected to be 48% and 52% respecvely,” the report says. “Total air passenger numbers are forecast to increase by 51%, from 43.3 million in 2017 to 65.6 million in 2039. Internaonal passenger traffic contributes the most value to the NSW and Australian economies.” The plan involves a motorway link to the WestConnex tollroad through a 13-hectare block of land north of the airport, called the “northern lands”. Qantas Drive and Airport Drive around the airport’s northern perimeter would be widened from two lanes in each direcon to four. Other points: Terminal Development Plan to 2039 includes: • Provision of new terminal infrastructure north of T1 and east of T2 and T3, to deliver addional acve stands: • 17 addional contact stands • Seven addional acve bussed aircraſt parking posions • Development of a satellite pier in the South West Sector providing a passenger product with a similar experience to that provided in the current terminal connected piers. • Enhancements to the terminal forecourts and landside areas to improve passenger and visitor experiences. • Opmising the use of terminal infrastructure by introducing swing gates that can accommodate internaonal and domesc/regional aircraſt. • Improving the door-to-door experience for all passengers with investment in next generaon technology, as well as enhanced access to mul-modal ground transport facilies. • Enhancing the retail and food and beverage offering throughout the terminals. • Improving passenger connecvity by reducing inter-precinct transfers. • A sustainable inter-precinct passenger transfer product that over me would ulise autonomous vehicles. • Soluons to enhance airline efficiency by reducing minimum connecon mes and improving aircraſt ulisaon. • Increasing the flexibility of terminal infrastructure to respond to changing airline business models. Sydney Airport plan foresees 65.6 million pax a yearA new master plan for Sydney Airport – the third plan in less than a decade – foresees international aircraft using the airport’s existing domestic terminals to cope with an enormous increase in international visitor arrivals.

Master Plan 2039, a 20-year blueprint for Australia’s busiest airport, was released in preliminary draft form on Monday. It replaces the previous Master Plan 2033 (released in February 2014), which in turn replaced the previous 2009 master plan.

The main driver behind Sydney Airport’s passenger growth will be international travellers, who are forecast to nearly double over the next 20 years to 31.5 million.

To help cater for this, an “integrated operations precinct” at the existing T2 and T3 domestic terminals will handle international flights.

Despite that, the main entry and exit point for international arrivals and departures will remain the T1 international terminal.

“International passengers, who contribute the most to the NSW and Australian economies, will be the main driver of growth and, by 2039, the mix of international and domestic passengers is expected to be 48% and 52% respectively,” the report says.

The plan involves a motorway link to the WestConnex tollroad through a 13-hectare block of land north of the airport, called the “northern lands”.

Qantas Drive and Airport Drive around the airport’s northern perimeter would be widened from two lanes in each direction to four.

Bookings soar on super long-range flightsUltra-long-range flights, the sort that Qantas operates between Perth and London, are proving popular with travellers, latest reports indicate.

Long-range variants of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner and the Airbus long-range A350-900ULR make such flights possible. Initial concerns flared about whether super-long flights – the sort that some passengers claim “numb your bum” – would take off with consumers.

Agents, however, reckon they are popular and so does AirlineRatings.com.

• Example one:Qantas chief executive Alan Joyce has discounted reports from Britain’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) that loadings on the Qantas Perth-London non-stop flights stand at just 78.1%.Joyce told AirlineRatings.com that the load factor on the service is actually an amazing 92% – rising to 94% for premium classes. That would make it the most profitable Qantas service.

• Example two:Agents in Singapore say Singapore Airlines’ new non-stop service from Singapore to New

York, which will be the longest flight in the world when it starts on 11 October 2018, is booking fast. The service will use an Airbus A350-900ULR, the first of which will be delivered to Singapore Airlines in a week or two. The flight path will head over China, Mongolia and the North Pole before touching down in Newark Airport, New Jersey, gateway to New York.

• Example three:The B787s Qantas ordered from Boeing years ago are now flowing through and Qantas will use the new planes on routes including Melbourne to San Francisco, Brisbane-LA-New York and from Australian east coast ports (Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane) to Hong Kong. The 12,645km Melbourne to San Francisco route started Saturday, 1 September 2018. Qantas will be the only airline connecting that city pair non-stop.

• Example four:Air New Zealand will launch a new non-stop service between Auckland, New Zealand and Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport from November this year. From 30 November 2018, Air New Zealand will operate the new 13,179km route three times weekly, year-round with its new configuration B787-9 Dreamliner aircraft. Flight time will be approximately 15 hours northbound and just over 16 hours southbound. The new service will provide Australian travellers with a smoother experience transiting through Auckland, where customers can remain in the same terminal and eligible customers are able to use Air New Zealand’s flagship international lounge.

• Example five:Qantas is pressing on with its Project Sunrise, which is seeking an aircraft that can fly nonstop the 16,991km route from Sydney to London and the 16,672km route from New York to Melbourne. Ultra-long-range aircraft from Boeing and Airbus are in the running. The Airbus A350-900ULR reportedly uses additional space already available in the existing fuel tanks to carry an extra fuel, pushing its range to an astounding 17,900km.

The luxury cruise line says the 144-guest Silver Explorer and 116-guest Silver Discoverer will be sailing the region next year, making stops in Japan, South Korea, India and Indonesia. The ships’ deployment plans were in the news this week as Silversea announced that the company is marking 10 years of ultra-luxury expedition cruising.
