LEARNING OBJECTIVESAt the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

1. Determine when it is safe to perform surgery on patients beingtreated with anticoagulation without increasing the risk ofhemorrhage or thromoembolism after discontinuing treatment

2. Determine the appropriate insulin therapy for inpatients

3. Discuss the importance and advancements of CAD screening tests

4. Discuss the hormonal contraception options available today andthe healthcare risks associated with each option

5. Identify which treatments for valvular heart disease are based onevidence-based data

6. Describe recent advances in the treatment for restless legssyndrome

7. Discuss the new data about the potential harmful impact of longacting beta agonists in the treatment of asthma and whetherpatients who are currently doing well with long acting beta agonistsshould have these medications discontinued

8. Identify management strategies for a depressed patient who hasn’tresponded to an SSRI and when a patient requires referral to amental health expert

9. Discuss screening and treatment for non alcoholic steatohepatitis(NASH)

10. Describe the dermatologic manifestations of several infectiousdiseases

11. Discuss what medical interventions are important in treatingpatients with chronic renal failure and when referral to anephrologist is appropriate

12. Describe what treatment interventions are effective for commonlipid disorders

13. Determine appropriate screening and treatment strategies for apatient with osteoporosis

14. Describe an approach to the evaluation and treatment of the dizzypatient

15. Describe an approach for the identification and early assessment ofinflammatory arthritis

16. Discuss new treatment options for patients with substance abuseand addiction problems

17. Recognize and assist patients who are victims of domestic violence

18. Perform a basic evaluation of patients with common sports relatedinjuries

19. Recognize common causes of the red eye and initiate appropriatetreatment and referral

20. Describe the relevant areas of federal law in dealing with difficultpatients

21. Describe the diagnosis and treatment of patients with dementia

22. Describe recent changes in the economics of health care deliver inthe United States

23. Describe change in utilization and types of club drugs andassociation with HIV

24. Understand recent changes in allergy and immunology

25. Appreciate common and severe medical complications inhospitalized patients

TARGET AUDIENCEThis CME program is designed to meet theeducational needs of practicing physicians in internalmedicine, family practice and subspecialists who alsopractice primary care medicine.
