Dear parents and carers,
Thank you for the amazing way in which learning areas were
presented and your teamwork on the Celebration of
Learning and Exhibition Evening. Student work presented and
teacher presentations were of a high standard and
demonstrated the breadth of learning and teaching in the
school. Great conversations amongst families and visitors to
the school!
Here are some examples of student learning across the school.
The Year 6 Exhibition was a fantastic event which showcased
the process of learning in a medium that totally engaged the
students for a whole term, and the audience on the night! I felt
so proud of our Year 6 students and the short films they
showcased. They definitely demonstrated a high level of craft
with the critical elements of film making. They developed their
own scripts, deconstructed short films and understood
elements of cinematography.

Congratulations to Sam and Andrew for facilitating such
rich 21st century learning for our students. An exhibition
doesn’t just ‘happen’ without the input of all of the teachers
in the years before the Exhibition takes place. The work
that has gone into designing learning and developing the
inquiry process with the focus on skills over the years has
made the Exhibition experience a true inquiry process.
Have a wonderful tour to Vietnam which includes a visit to
our sister school next week. I look forward to being part of
this rich cultural experience that supports our students to
become internationally minded citizens.

Year One News
In Grade One we are inquiring into How We Express Ourselves,
with our central idea being natural environments can inspire
creativity. We have been focusing on how and why the natural
environment inspires us, and how these environments are
expressed in different art forms.
At the beginning of the unit, we set up different provocations
which included images from Jeannie Baker books, artwork by
Andy Goldsworthy, poetry, and videos of Ludovico Einaudi and
Cirque du Soleil. All of these provocations and artists were
inspired by nature.
We have also been exposing students to various tone poems
which focus on particular environments such as rainforests,
jungles, the ocean and streams. In small groups, students
created their own movement acts where they were inspired by
nature and expressed their ideas through movement. Students
below were inspired by rain and how water moves and flows
during various rain conditions.
We also were very fortunate to have Anne, our new PYP
Coordinator, come into the Grade One classrooms to teach our
students about soundscapes. The students were so engaged in
this lesson and loved creating a whole class soundscape,
focusing on a storm as their natural environment. Students
generated sounds which they might hear within the storm, and
put these ideas into a sequence to create their soundscape.
They also loved listening to Anne playing the guitar, and were
able to incorporate music into their own soundscapes at the end
of the lesson.
Indigenous Literacy Day
On Wednesday 6th September, Footscray Primary School
celebrated Indigenous Literacy Day. We would like to thank
all teachers, students and families for such a successful
celebration of literacy learning and some incredible costumes!
All students participated in a whole day of creative and
innovative literacy-based activities in multi-age groups. Our
teachers organised highly engaging and exciting activities
that included book making, poetry slams, musical readers
theatre of Tiddalik the Frog, digital literacies about No Way
Yirrikipayi! and craft activities connected to Aboriginal and
Torres Strait Islander stories.
I would also like to thank families for their fantastic effort in
our FPS Great Book Swap. Many families have been bringing
in books over the last few weeks and this ensured that the
Book Swap was a big success. It was exciting observing the
engagement and enthusiasm in students eagerly sifting
through our huge collection of books. It was a wonderful way
to encourage literacy through the exchange of favourite
literature.
Our overall fundraising total was $880! Thank you to teachers
and families for all of their support towards the Indigenous
Literacy Foundation. The proceeds will go towards supporting
access to literacy resources in remote communities and
closing the literacy gap between indigenous and non-
indigenous students.
