The Prince George Citizen - Friday, November 16,1990 - 35 The wrong clothes can break a man ACCIDEHTS HURT n If'R f' EVERYBODY. Supported by the Prince George Citizen TORONTO (CP) Clothes don’t make the man, but the wrong garment can break him, says media adviser Gabor Apor. Politicians are all too aware of this which is why many of them have turned, over the years, to Apor for sartorial and other advice. Apor’s clients have included multinational corporations and a string of prominent Liberals, in cluding former prime ministers Pierre Trudeau, John Turner and former Ontario premier David Pe terson. “ There are a whole bunch of things that say a lot about you before you open your mouth and try to defend yourself, and they’re all visual,” Apor said. Wearing a self-designed, cus tom-made brown tweed jacket and jeans, Apor confesses he is a “ shopoholic,” with a weakness for the suitings of Giorgio Armani and Hugo Boss. “ The Italians have a sense of the classic and an Armani suit will look as elegant today as 10 years down the road. “ My greatest fantasy is to wake up in Milan and find that I speak Italian,” said Apor, who estimates he has more than 150 pairs of shoes in his closet and who gave away 200 shirts last year when he moved. But Apor stresses he isn’t a fashion consultant in the business of selling ties or suits. With eight Cleo awards for advertising in addition to numer ous other awards for his “ other” job as an independent television producer, Apor says his primary focus is to “ interpret strategies and policies of individuals or cor porations into communication ve hicles.” And if a few tailor-made suits help get those points across, so be it “ If a suit could get you elected, every politician would have a tailor in the next office,” said Apor. “ Everything is really in sup port of content and his suit should be silently supportive.” To Apor, clothing is just one element — but an important one — in the total media image. “ You should never wear questionable clothing. The moment you wear something that someone says ‘I wonder why he put that on,’ it’s the worst thing you can do. “ Politicians should always look like they’re working. The politi cian who wears Fishermen’s clothes to talk to a fisherman is an idiot. It just looks condescending.” As for “ fashion” colors such as brown, the current rage in men’s suits, Apor says up and coming junior executives would be best to stick with charcoal grey and navy. “ Fashion colors are a marketing tool for women to buy new things for men’s wardrobes. Darker suits will take you anywhere you want to go.” R e - e le c t R A D F O R D , A d r i e n n e School Paid for by five committee to Re-clect Adrienne Radford. TORONTO (CP) — Clothes don’t make the man, but the wrong garment can break him, says media adviser Gabor Apor.

Politicians are all too aware o f this which is why many of them have turned, over the years, to Apor for sartorial and other advice.

Apor’s clients have included multinational corporations and a string o f prominent Liberals, including former prime ministers Pierre Trudeau, John Turner and former Ontario premier David Peterson.

“ There are a whole bunch o f things that say a lot about you before you open your mouth and try to defend yourself, and they’re all visual,” Apor said.

Wearing a self-designed, custom-made brown tweed jacket and jeans, Apor confesses he is a “ shopoholic,” with a weakness for the suitings of Giorgio Armani and Hugo Boss.

“ The Italians have a sense o f the classic and an Armani suit will look as elegant today as 1 0 years down the road.

“ My greatest fantasy is to wake up in Milan and find that I speak Italian,” said Apor, who estimates he has more than 150 pairs o f shoes in his closet and who gave away 2 0 0 shirts last year when he moved.

But Apor stresses he isn’t a fashion consultant in the business o f selling ties or suits.

With eight C leo awards for advertising in addition to numerous other awards for his “ other” job as an independent television producer, Apor says his primary focus is to “ interpret strategies and policies o f individuals or corporations into communication veh icles.”

And if a few tailor-made suits help get those points across, so be i t

“ If a suit could get you elected, every politician would have a tailor in the next office,” said Apor. “ Everything is really in support o f content and his suit should be silently supportive.”

To Apor, clothing is just one elem ent — but an important one — in the total media image.

“ You should never wear questionable clothing. The moment

you wear something that someone says ‘I wonder why he put that on,’ it’s the worst thing you can do.

“ Politicians should always look like they’re working. The politician who wears Fishermen’s clothes to talk to a fisherman is an idiot. It just looks condescending.”

As for “ fashion” colors such as brown, the current rage in m en’s suits, Apor says up and coming junior executives would be best to stick with charcoal grey and navy.

“ Fashion colors are a marketing tool for women to buy new things for men’s wardrobes. Darker suits will take you anywhere you want to go.”
