Producing a Word Document

1.Display the word processor document by either creating a new one or opening an existing document.

2.Type text or edit the document.

3.Save the document.

4.Print the document.

5.Close the document.

6.Quit Word properly.

Creating a New Word Document4.2

Microsoft Word is the word processor application in Microsoft Office.

If Word is already started, clicking the New Blank document on the toolbar creates a new document.

Word Layout Window Title Bar displays the name and type of

document. The name Document 1 Temporary until it is given a name.

The menu bar– contains the names of drop-down menus that contain commands.

The toolbar – contains buttons that represent different actions.

The rulers – are used for measuring and also contains markers used for formatting text.

The status bar – displays information about the document

The New Document task pane – allows documents to be created and opened.

Using the Keyboard with Word4.3

Home key or end key moves the insertion point to the beginning or end of the line of text.

The delete key is used to erase the character directly to the right of the insertion point.

The Esc or Escape key is used to cancel the current operation.

The Insert key is used to turn on the Overtype mode which is located on the right-hand side of your keyboard.

A document can be edited or changed as needed.

The mouse is used to place the insertion point. When the pointer is moved into a document, it changes from an arrow shape to the text pointer, or I-beam (I)

Saving a Document

When saving a document a file name can contain letters, numbers, spaces, and underscore character (_).

When saving a document a file name can not be saved if you have the following a colon(:), a asterisk (*), a question mark(?), or other special characters.

Once you have save a document it will take on the name you saved it plus a suffix of .doc. Example: assignment1.doc

Closing a Word Document4.11

When you are finished working on a document, It should be saved and then closed.

Closing a document means that its window is removed from the screen and the file is no longer in the computer’s memory.

Quitting a document means that a window is removed from the screen and the program is no longer in the computer’s memory. Word can be quit by selecting exit or clicking on the Red X in located in the right-hand corner.
