Our Learning Targets Today:
Celebrate!
To develop an awareness of the instructional shifts and explore applications to our classrooms.
To understand that this transition will occur over a 3 year timeframe, and we will move through these changes together. 2012 - 2013In pursuing authentic systems change to improve school performance, individual and team learning is central to achieving real and sustained growth. Collective learning proves a foundational component to improving professional practice in schools.

The world is changing.Meet the future.Every student prepared for a world yet to be imaginedProvide excellent, distinctive educational experiences that equip students for success today and in the futureOn the map and picture shown here are of Bali, an Indonesian island.
The Balinese people have a tradition when you are walking down the road in Bali and you pass a stranger, the very first question he or she will ask you is, Where are you going? The second question is, Where are you coming from? To a Westerner, this can seem like a rather invasive inquiry from a perfect stranger, but theyer just trying to get an orientation on you, trying to insert you into the grid for the purposes of security and comfort. This Balinese tradition suggests a way of positioning our progress, orienting where we are currently and serves as a worthy starting point in gaining perspective, in considering our own position in District 11 with regard to school capacity. 4

these new standards will ensure that a childs education is not largely determined by where he or she lives, rather than his or her abilities. We must close gaps in opportunity and achievement that obstruct the success of all young people. Doing so improves their lives, helps sustain our democracy, and strengthens our nation. - Rothman, 2011 Something in Common: The Common Core Standards and the Next Chapter in American EducationLook to a day and time when a students performance outcomes will no longer be tied to ethnicity, geography, gender, and race and when those characteristics will be details not determiners of a childs chance for success . . . Focus coherence - rigor 24Wiliam (2007) concludes : Now we understand that the quality of the teacher is the single most important determinant of how much students learn, and in the classrooms of the most effective teachers, students from disadvantaged backgrounds learn as much as those from advantaged backgrounds. The impact of teacher quality is profound.
Teacher CapacityWe do the ordinary extraordinarily well . . . Michael Barber says, the quality of an education system cannot exceed the quality of its teachers 2007
The study from Harvard University showed that the impact of having an outstanding teacher in kindergarten can be detected in the annual salaries of those students thirty years later.(Chetty et al., 2010) Wiliam (2007)

PlaybookHattie concludes that, teachers using particular teaching methods, teachers with high expectations for all students, and teachers who have created positive student-teacher relationships that are most likely to have the above average effects on student achievement. Changing the Odds, p. 8Theres little mystery as to what makes one teacher more effective than another. After reviewing hundreds of meta-analyses on teaching effects, John Hattie concluded that, the current mantra, that teachers make the difference, is misleading because not all teachers have powerful effects on students. 29

Colorado Academic Standards
2012 - 2013In our careers, we will never have a better opportunity . . . We, in this country, stand at the intersection of educational history. The field of American eduation is changing in ways that are more dramatic and more far-reaching than anything any of us could have imagined. If we are going to play a role in shaping the future, then we need to see hope and opportunity. As a part of this, we need to embrace what is good about the Common Core State Standards and roll up our sleeves and work to make those standards into a force that lifts our teaching and our schools. We would be pleased indeed if students in all our classrooms could do this level of work independently. -Caulkins, 2011 Pathways to the Common Core: Accelerating Achievement59
