Rachel’s Corner Hope and Healing After Abortion

There are many post-abortive women and men in our churches who live in silent torment. They believe that if their friends knew what they had done, they would reject and condemn them. We must reach out in truth, love and mercy, and bring the good news of Christ’s forgiveness and healing to these hurting women and men.

If you or someone you know has experienced abortion,

we can help.

LENT PENANCE†PRAYER†FASTING†ABSTINENCE†ALMSGIVING

Prayer, fasting, abstinence and almsgiving, are the traditional

disciplines of Lent. The faithful and catechumens should under-

take these practices seriously in a spirit of penance and of

preparation for Baptism or of renewal of Baptism at Easter.

Penance is a spiritual discipline that controls the passions of

the body and frees our souls for prayer. Refraining from meat

and additional pleasures, mortifies our sensual desires and al-

lows us to focus on our true desire of union with Christ. Con-

sider abstaining from your favorite foods, beverages, or amuse-

ments during Lent.

Prayer raises our hearts and minds to God in thanksgiving and

praise. During Lent, we place special emphasis on prayer and

contemplation on the Passion and Death of our Lord. Consider

a retreat or a book of spiritual writings by one of the saints.

Fasting is to be observed by all 18 years of age and older, who

have not yet celebrated their 60th birthday. On a fast days

(Ash Wednesday & Good Friday) one full meal is allowed. Two other

meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according

to each one's needs, but together they should not equal a full

meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids are

allowed.

Abstinence is observed by all 14 years of age and older. On

days of abstinence (every Friday of Lent) no meat is allowed. When

health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law

does not oblige.

Almsgiving is the foundational call of Christians to charity.

During Lent, we are asked to focus more intently on donating

money or goods to the poor and performing other acts of char-

ity. The Rice Bowl is a perfect opportunity for almsgiving.

A message from Fr. Horacio — Mensaje del Padre Horacio

God Has A Plan For Us

There was a beautiful plan of eternal happiness in the

garden where God had placed the human beings. In

addition, it was very simple: the human beings would

be obedient to God and would know well his tremen-

dous dignity and beauty in being created in His image

and likeness. He would know well who God was and

would not seek to change their roles. The rest would

be all abundance and happiness. But these plans were

truncated by the refusal of the human beings to do

something as simple as maintaining a righteous rela-

tionship with God. He fell into the temptation of lies:

wanting to be god and not just his child. There was no

loneliness, hunger, or necessities; and yet he deviates

from the plan, in doing so, he remains empty in the

midst of all abundance.

Christ, the second Adam, is not placed in a beautiful

garden, but in a desert, but with the same plan, al-

though it is much more difficult. The temptation to

show off his power, of not following God’s salvation

plan, of worshipping other god appears, just as it had to

Adam, but Jesus rejects it. He knows well his identity

as the Son of God and his mission. Neither loneliness

nor necessity makes him deviate from this plan. In do-

ing so, in the middle of that desert, he fills everyone

with life.

The path is quite clear for Christians: God has a plan, a

dream for us; it includes happiness, abundance of life,

salvation. But we are always going to face tempta-

tions: having more and more and concerting things into

our gods. To have greater power than others and per-

haps prove it by stepping on them or abusing power, to

demonstrate our worth; and all that is accomplished,

because it is not a plan of God’s plan, is to remove us

from our own image, get us away from the garden and

lead us increasingly to a arid and drought-filled de-

sert. Christ entered the desert so that we could enter

the garden. Jesus followed the plan of God, even with

all his difficulties, so that we may also learn to follow

him. So that wealth and abundant life would grow in

our deserts, so that we may, like Jesus, know that we

are the beloved children of God.

For Reflection

What is God’s plan for you?? In what ways do you feel

tempted to abandon, break off relationships, to isolate

yourself within you?

Dios Tiene Un Plan Para Nosotros

Allí no

presento a Adán. Pero Jesús la rechaza. Conoce bien

Y tal plan in-

cluye felicidad, abundancia de vida, salvación. Pero

to de aridez y sequia.

sientes a veces tentado a abandonar, a romper relacio-
