The Flutes Flutes are some of the oldest instruments, dating
back to the very beginning of human music Over the centuries, the
flute has been modified to improve the sound and playability of the
instrument, but the basic instrument is still mostly the same

Flutes continued The flutes are the highest woodwind
instruments in the orchestra The two flute instruments in the
orchestra are the Flute and the Piccolo Special Effects: Flutes can
do a number of special effects, from multiple and flutter tonguing,
overblowing, and multiphonics that are produced by singing and
playing into the instrument
Slide 7
The Flute The Flute is one of the main Soprano instruments of
the orchestra It is generally used for high notes, because the
instrument is not very loud when compared to the other woodwinds,
and the low notes on the flute are the quietest There are typically
three flutes in an orchestra, with the third flute doubling on
piccolo Doubling: when a player switches between two similar
instruments

Slide 9
The Piccolo The piccolo is the highest woodwind instrument in
the orchestra, playing an octave above the flute It is roughly half
as big as the flute, but can play with more than double the volume
Because it plays such high, shrill notes, it can usually be heard
over the entire orchestra

Slide 11
Other members continued There are several other, larger members
of the flute family, but they only rarely appear in a typical
orchestra These other flutes usually play together in their own
separate groups called Flute Ensembles Ensemble: Any group of
instruments playing together
