KEYNOTE SPEAKERJACKSON KATZ

Jackson Katz, Ph.D., is an American educator, author, filmmaker and cultural

theorist who is internationally renowned for his pioneering scholarship and

activism on issues of gender and violence. Katz is a key architect of the

popular “bystander” approach to prevention, which has been used in the

development and implementation of system-wide violence prevention efforts

of institutions such as the US Marine Corps, Air Force, Navy and Army. Katz

is the creator of award-winning and widely used educational documentaries

and books that have brought insights into issues of gender and violence to

millions of university and high school students as well as professionals in

education, human services, public health and law enforcement across North

America, Europe, Australia and Asia. Katz has appeared on TV and radio

across six continents, including The Oprah Winfrey Show, Good Morning

America, and ABC, BBC and CBC radio, and his TED talk, “Violence against

Women is a Men’s Issue,” has been viewed more than 2.7 million times.

SHE OBJECTS:CHALLENGING GENDER STEREOTYPES IN THE MEDIA THAT OBJECTIFY, SEXUALISE AND DIMINISH WOMEN

This year, TWF is proud to present She Objects - the first documentary of its kind in Hong Kong to explore how tradi-tional and new forms of media create and exacerbate often harmful gender stereotypes. At once provocative and inspir-ing, She Objects challenges viewers to think critically about the way media portrays women and the implications for girls’ eating disorders and self-esteem issues, rising incidents of violence against women, and the erosion of female ambition. Join us for the Hong Kong premiere of She Objects in Q2!

Staring this Spring, TWF will also launch media literacy workshops in local secondary schools and universities, drawing on the film and the discussion guides and study kits which we have commissioned the Chinese University of Hong Kong to develop.
