News From your CD!
Happy February, the month for love. It’s amazing the number of great people in my life that I
would not have ever met if it were not for motorcycles. Love you all.
What a year we have planned! Our Dinner Socials are still on the first Tuesday of each month and start at 6PM. March is Maintenance Month, April is our Brown Bag
Auction and May 6th will be are first group ride and camp out. June is our overnight ride to Joseph OR, July is District Rally in Cashmere WA, and August is Region I
Rally in Tillamook, OR. September will be the last campout for the year. Also Steve is going to plan some rides after the gathering. So if you want to get some riding in this year I think we’ve got you covered.
I have made up some calendars. I will have them at all social dinners and group gatherings if you need one. And our great newsletter/webmaster editor
will be keeping you updated on all events.
Also Kaye Maier is going to be the head chairman for the brown bag. If you have questions, or would like to help, give
A huge Thank You goes out to Louise and

Tips for Sharing the Road with Motorcycles
Driving with a motorcycle near you isn’t like driving with other cars. Motorcycles are often smaller and harder to see, plus they don't have the safeguards of metal framing, seatbelts, or airbags when it comes to protection from collision. That's why drivers sharing the road with motorcycles need to be extra careful so everyone arrives at their destination safely.
Here are some important ways drivers can observe motorcycle safety.
Always signal, check mirrors, and check blind spots. These behaviors are good habits to begin with, and they are doubly important when sharing the road with motorcycles. Because they are more compact, motorcycles may go unnoticed in a casual glance before a lane change, especially in low light or bad weather.
Large vehicles, watch out! If you are driving a big truck or a van, you already know that your vision can be limited. Your blind spots are larger than those of other vehicles, making it harder to see smaller cars and motorcycles around you. Be cautious when making turns or changing lanes by keeping in mind that a biker might be harder to see.
Give them the whole lane. You may think that because motorcycles are smaller and don't take up the entire lane, it's alright to pass them in the same lane. Think again. Give a bike the full lane, the same way you would any other car and driver.
Treat motorcycle turn signals with caution. If you approach a motorcycle with an activated turn signal, wait for a moment to see what they'll do. Unlike cars, most motorcycle signals often aren't self-cancelling, so the driver has to remember to manually turn the signal off. Give yourself and the motorcyclist a moment to ensure they are actually turning.
Give motorcycles extra following & passing distance. Many motorcyclists often slow down by only rolling off the throttle or downshifting (instead of outright braking), so you may not always see brake lights to alert you of a bike's stop. Allow for 3 to 4 seconds of following time for motorcycles, and always assume a bike will brake when approaching a stop at an intersection. Drivers who cut-off or unintentionally pull in front of a motorcycle without allowing enough space can force the rider to over-brake, slide and fall.
Please give this to your friends even if they do not ride motorcycles.
Thank You
Carl Maier, Motorist Awareness Coordinator
Snowmageddon, Snowpocalypse, the Polar Vortex, SnOMG!
There is no end to the terms for "really big snowstorm," and those terms came in handy, particularly during the 2014-'15 winter. Just check out snowfall totals in the Top 10 Snowiest Cities, aaccording to Accuweather.com:
But with really big snow storms – and even everyday, run-of-the-mill snowfalls – comes a risk of death by shoveling. They ranged in age from their 40s to 75. Nationwide, snow shoveling is responsible for thousands of injuries and as many as 100 deaths each year.
So, why so many deaths? Shoveling snow is just another household chore, right? Not at all, says Harvard Health Executive Editor Patrick J. Skerrett.
"Picking up a shovel and moving hundreds of pounds of snow, particularly after doing nothing physical for several months, can put a big strain on the heart," Skerrett wrote in February 2013. (http://www.health.harvard.edu/blog/shoveling-snow-can-be-hard-on-the-heart-201302085868)
Pushing a heavy snow blower also can cause injury. And, there's the cold factor. Cold weather can increase heart rate and blood pressure. It can make blood clot more easily and constrict arteries, which decreases blood supply. This is true even in healthy people. Individuals over the age of 40 or who are relatively inactive should be particularly careful.
National Safety Council recommends the following tips to shovel safely:
Do not shovel after eating or while smoking
Take it slow and stretch out before you begin
Shovel only fresh, powdery snow; it's lighter
Push the snow rather than lifting it
If you do lift it, use a small shovel or only partially fill the shovel
Lift with your legs, not your back
Do not work to the point of exhaustion
Don't pick up that shovel without a doctor's permission if you have a history of heart disease. If you feel tightness in the chest or dizziness, stop immediately. A clear driveway is not worth your life.
Snow Blower Safety
Be safe with these tips from the American Society for Surgery of the Hand and the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons:
If the blower jams, turn it off
Keep your hands away from the moving parts
Do not drink alcohol and use the snow blower
Be aware of the carbon monoxide risk of running a snow blower in an enclosed space
Refuel your snow blower when it is off, never when it is running
