On July 13, 1985, at Wembley Stadium in London, Prince Charles and Princess Diana officially open Live Aid, a worldwide rock concert organized to raise money for the relief of famine-stricken Africans. Live Aid was the brainchild of Bob Geldof. Continued at JFK Stadium in Philadelphia and at other arenas around the world, the 16-hour “superconcert” was globally linked by satellite to more than a billion viewers in 110 nations. In a triumph of technology and good will, the event raised more than $125 million in famine relief for Africa.

No matter what season it is, skin isn’t the only thing that gets burned by sunlight. Eyesaare just as sensitive, and children’s eyes are especially vulnerable.

“The crystalline lens in children’s and teenagers’ eyes is more transparent than

in adults, which makes them more susceptible to cornea and retina damage from the sun,” says Corinne M c C o r m a c k , s p o k e s p e r s o n for The Vision Council and Fashion Director

at FGX International, Inc. “Having your kids wear sunglasses while outdoors is actually as important as getting them to wear hats and sunscreen.”

The Vision Council just launched a Bureau of Missing Sunglasses initiative informing adults and children that “sunglasses are absolutely critical for keeping vision safe from UV damage,” as stated in their 2012 report.

So, what can you do to protect your young tike’s eyes?

“If you’re concerned your little guy or gal won’t wear sunglasses, look for designs you know they love -- like bright patterns, fun shapes or sunglasses with their favorite cartoon or movie character,” adds McCormack. The following safety guidelines can also help:

Seek shade for mid-day sun. UV rays are most powerful from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., so avoid being in direct sunlight without

access to shade, umbrellas or protective clothing.

Set a good example. Your children will learn many habits from you, so reapply sunscreen often, and always remember to wear your sunglasses. Remind kids to pack their sunglasses and hats for vacation, and reward them for reapplying sunscreen. Don’t forget, sunglasses protect your eyes all year round.

Long-term complications, including cataracts, retinal problems, macular degeneration, cancer and abnormal growths on the eye’s surface can occur. Experts at the World Health Organization say (UV) damage is largely p r e v e n t a b l e . E n c o u r a g i n g good sun-exposure habits from childhood is a must. NewsUSA

Celebrity Best/Worst Tippers

You don’t have to be a “foodie” to be aware of restaurant trends. When a particular ingredient or style of preparation is “hot,” it will show up on the menus of everything from chain restaurants to fine-dining establishments. So what’s hot right now in restaurant trends? And how do those trends evolve?

Pop culture, demographic shifts, and growing “foodie” awareness drive growth and new developments for restaurants. Dining out is one of America’s favorite pastimes, and the restaurant industry knows this. From unique flavor combinations, to gluten-free food and beverages, to food trucks and chefs’ tables.

Top trends * Healthful alternatives: In response to Americans’ growing interest in health and nutrition, nutritious food products are everywhere this year. From all natural yogurt drinks to calorie-free “miracle” noodles, this is a trend that shows no signs of slowing down.

* Premium and artisan products: Targeting the evolving tastes of savvy restaurant customers looking for a unique dining experience, premium products are a clear trend this year.

* Gluten-free products: Gluten-free products are making their way into the mainstream market, such as gluten-free pizza dough and gluten-free focaccia to gluten-free ciders.

* Food trucks: Food trucks continue to drive interest, as six in 10 consumers say they would visit a food truck offered by their favorite restaurant.

* Ethnic cuisines and flavors: Responding to consumers’ increasingly global palates.

Dining trends evolve through a vibrant interaction of consumer demand, industry response and the creativity of chefs. As the dining public continues to focus on great food and a quality experience, the industry will react to ensure restaurant offerings please the discerning palates of their guests. ARA

Best Tipper: Charlie Sheen - When Charlie Sheen’s daughter Cassandra Jade Estevez had her Sweet Sixteen, Sheen decided to show off his generous side. Sheen slipped the event staff a little something extra, tipping out everyone who worked the event a smooth $200.Worst Tipper: David Byrne - The Talking Heads frontman is considered one of the worst tippers ever because he doesn’t leave anything, ever.

Tourism officials from across the state discussed the opportunities and challenges western North Dakota’s oil boom is having on their industry during a recent conference, with better communication being a common theme to clear up perceptions about access, safety and lodging. Williston also is considering what it could do to meet the increased tourism interest in the oil boom.

Tourists call the Dickinson CVB asking for a map to do a self-tour of some oil rigs. What most people don’t understand is that you can’t just drive up to the rigs. Although taking tourists out on a rig isn’t possible, there’s potential for educational tourism.

There’s a misconception that people can’t travel in western North Dakota and all of the hotels are booked, but that’s not exactly true.Tourists should be able to find hotel rooms in western North

Dakota this summer, but they need to plan ahead. Most hotels hold rooms for leisure travelers and had openings last summer that weren’t filled because people assumed they were full.

In the past two years, 26 new hotels opened in 13 communities in the state to help with demand. Another 31 hotels are under development and are expected to add 2,400 rooms in the next year.

Motel 6 is one of the newest hotels that is now open in Williston. The Williston CVB wants to help clear up misperceptions about the lodging situation in the oil patch.

Negative stories about the Oil Patch have made some cautious, and perception is reality for a lot of people.

Tourism officials are being asked to help explain the communities are safe to visit.

Most out-of-state tourists stopping at the Fargo visitors’ center are not aware of the oil boom. Those heading west without advance hotel reservations are disappointed to find out they may have trouble getting rooms.

Infrastructure challenges in western North Dakota could limit the number of oil and gas drilling rigs in the Bakken system’s rich Williston Basin, industry executives said at a conference.

As companies have flocked to tap resources there, heavy equipment has overwhelmed roads while workers have filled up available housing. The problem is more acute in North Dakota than Montana.

There are close to 220 drilling rigs in the Williston Basin. That number could easily be doubled, purely based on resources. However, estimates of growth could be capped at 300 rigs in the next few years until infrastructure can catch up.

It’s difficult to move oil field services in this part of the basin. Some roads are literally crumbling.

North Dakota has been responsive in devoting money to improve roads, with state legislators approving a massive investment last year.

Finding places to put employees whether for work or sleep also is a challenge. Some companies have had to basically buy apartment complexes to

put their people in. We’ve got campers around buildings.

There are also environmental concerns to be acknowledged in a state that relies on its mountains, streams and plains

for tourism and recreation.

I n d u s t r y officials said they are working on lowering e m i s s i o n s , recycling water, reusing existing well pads, roads, and reducing truck traffic.

They also are looking for ways to capture and profitably sell natural gas that is flared off into the air during oil operations. Especially in North Dakota, a lack of enough infrastructure to collect, move and process natural gas that’s extracted along with oil at every well can make it more economically attractive to let the gas escape into the air, said Trisha Curtis of Energy Policy Research Foundation Inc.

8 Community

Last summer, the small town of Minot, N.D., was severely damaged by a record-breaking flood. As Minot’s 40,000 residents struggled to put their lives back together, many found solace in trying to rebuild their beloved Oak Park.

Oak Park anchored the community and provided a place for friends, families and neighbors to be active and enjoy the outdoors together. Every summer, the park was the setting for concerts, a farmers market and more. The sense of loss was profound among residents, mourning memories in the park washed away by the flood.

So, last summer when Coca-Cola launched the “America Is Your Park” campaign, park lovers in Minot seized the opportunity to rally behind Oak Park. Park supporters from around the country cast more than 13 million votes for their favorite parks during the campaign. No one could have imagined that this small park would beat out thousands of others to become “America’s Favorite Park” and take home a $100,000 recreation grant. But that’s exactly what happened! The entire community got involved!

Park lovers held events in the park, mobilized online, engaged hometown celebrities and voted non-stop. Their efforts not only captured the attention of local news media and dignitaries, but an A-list Hollywood celebrity from Minot got involved.

Is your park America’s next favorite? Is it in need of repairs, big or small? Follow Oak Park’s lead, and your favorite park could win. The park with the most votes will get a $100,000 recreation grant from the Coca-Cola Live Positively initiative to help restore, rebuild or enhance activity areas in the park. Use your home computer or smartphone to vote at LivePositively.com/parks. NewsUSA

His brother is a household name across all age groups. Every one knows the lyrics of Ring of Fire and many other songs. This last weekend Tommy Cash visited North Dakota, visiting his friend in Mandan. Tommy Cash, well-known as the brother of Johnny Cash, performed Saturday evening with his band The Cash Crew. This was Cash`s third time in Mandan. He became friends with Mandan resident Louie Zachmeier eight years ago when he surprised Zachmeier on his birthday with a musical performance. On Friday night, Cash and his band practiced in a home near Mandan.

Cash was born in Dyess, Arkansas, youngest of four sons and three daughters of Ray and Carrie (Rivers) Cash, and eight years after his brother, Johnny Cash. He formed his first band in high school. After high school graduation, he enlisted into the Army. While in the army, he was a disc jockey for the American Forces Radio Network.

After the Army, Cash played with Hank Williams, Jr., and later gained a record

deal from Musicor Records in 1965. A year later, he joined United Artists Records and just missed the Country Top 40 in 1968 with “The Sounds of Goodbye.”

In late 1969, while on Epic Records, he delivered his biggest hit, a tune dedicated to John F. Kennedy, Robert F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King, entitled, “Six White Horses.” 1970 saw a pair of Top Ten singles, “One Song Away” and “Rise and Shine”, written by Carl Perkins. Cash’s final Top 20 hit, “I Recall a Gypsy Woman,” was released in 1973.

Cash continues to record albums and currently tours around the world.

It’s not easy to say goodbye, especially to the hometown that has given me so much over the years.

I’ve served as the vice president of c o m m u n i c a t i o n s at the Greater Naples Chamber of Commerce for the past five years. Next month, I am headed north – far north – to become the executive director of the Williston Area Chamber of Commerce in Williston, ND.

You may have heard of it recently in the national news. Williston sits atop the Bakken formation which covers about 200,000 square miles in Montana, North Dakota and Saskatchewan. Oil was discovered in the Bakken more than half a century ago.

Last year, production numbers rose to 152 million barrels with 80 %coming from the Bakken. Less than a week ago, North Dakota surpassed Alaska, becoming the

No. 2 state in the nation for oil production. A mere six years ago, North Dakota was No. 9.

A modern day “black gold” rush has ensued and the communities of western North Dakota are grappling with the very real challenges that have come with this time of great opportunity.

Reminds me a little of the exponential growth of a small town where I grew up on the west coast of Florida - although transplants there came not for black gold, but golden sunshine.

Local leaders are now estimating that the population has surpassed 17,000 with no end in sight. Housing is at an all-time premium, infrastructure is stretched to the limit and newcomers continue to arrive daily.

What struck me most upon my visits to Williston were the people. Certainly emotions are high as locals see their hometown forever changing and the stress that comes from growth that is just happening too fast. Yet, the locals and their leaders seem set on one very clear goal: weathering the growth and growing responsibly together.

CommunityChamber Appoints New Executive Director

Marci Seamples has been named the new Williston Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director.
