Meg-A-LatteIt’s not new anymore, but it is quality coffee in a comfortable atmosphere. Meg-A-Latte Coffee House located at 204 13th Street West, in Williston has quickly become the town’s favorite coffee shop.

“Meg-A-Latte coffee house is based on the belief that our customers’ needs are the utmost importance. Our barista team is committed to meeting those needs. As a result, a high percentage of our business will be from repeat customers and referrals.”

Not only does the coffee house have quality drinks and fair prices, or as I like to say “non-Starbuck” prices, they now have live music once a month, the next music event will be on June 23rd.

If you have not yet tried Meg-A-Latte you are missing out. They are located directly across the side street from Taco Johns on the Million Dollar Way.

Hi!My husband and I were in Williston on Memorial Day weekend and we picked up The Williston Trader. It looks great! I like the tone of it. It’s a good balance of articles and ads. I especially like the little just-for-fun things that are sprinkled throughout and the font is easy to read. I like the placement of the article about The Trader. It makes a good introduction but without taking up the front page. The article about Verizon was very useful to us, since we may be moving to Watford City and our cell phone didn’t work in the basin. I just thought I would throw out some comments, since you had asked for feedback.

In 1876, Native American forces led by Chiefs Crazy Horse and Sitting Bull defeat the U.S. Army troops of Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer in a bloody battle near southern Montana’s Little Bighorn River. The Battle of Little Bighorn - also called Custer’s Last Stand, marked the most decisive Native American victory and the worst U.S. Army defeat in the long Plains Indian War.

You may have spent hours making sure you are using just the right action verbs in your resume, and crafted the perfect cover letter to catch the attention of your future employer, but if you haven’t spent the time to clean up what’s on your Facebook page, all that work could be for naught. Social media sites allow you to connect and network as you search for a job, but they give you a platform to sell yourself - or shame yourself - to future employers.

Making sure you are buttoned up on your social media sites is as important as drafting a perfect resume and cover letter. It is not uncommon for a prospective employer to go to your Facebook page during the review process. Some employers are asking interviewees to pull up their Facebook pages while in an interview.

• Audit all your social media profiles to make sure there aren’t any posts or pictures you wouldn’t want a potential employer to see. Assume guilt by association - delete any offensive posts by your friends and hide them if they

have a habit of posting questionable content on your profiles.

• Demonstrate knowledge of your profession. Reposting interesting articles you come across relating to your field demonstrates knowledge and passion. Use your LinkedIn profile to share your experience and expertise, and post anything of interest that you may have authored on all your social media profiles.

• Make connections. LinkedIn is great for connecting with old teachers and other professional contacts. If you had a good relationship with a teacher or former coworker, ask him or her to write a recommendation that you can post on your profile. Connect with those that you meet at job fairs or industry events.

• Learn about your future employers. Follow companies for which you might eventually like to work so you can build your knowledge base about the company. Following the Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn feeds of companies and

p r o f e s s i o n a l organizations is also a great way to learn about job openings - and you can mention that you learned about the opening through social media to show that you’re adept at using these networks. (ARA)

“I never would have been President if it had not been for my experiences in North Dakota,” Theodore Roosevelt once remarked. Roosevelt first came to the badlands in September 1883 on a hunting trip. While here he became interested in the cattle business and invested in the Maltese Cross Ranch. He returned the next year and established the Elkhorn Ranch. Whenever he managed to spend time in the badlands, he became more and more alarmed by the damage that was being done to the land and its wildlife. He witnessed the virtual destruction of some big game species, such as bison and bighorn sheep. Overgrazing destroyed the grasslands and with them the habitats for small mammals and songbirds. Conservation increasingly became one of Roosevelt’s major concerns.

During his Presidency, Roosevelt established the US Forest Service and signed the 1906 Antiquities Act under which he proclaimed 18 national monuments. He also established 5 national parks, 51 wildlife refuges and 150 national forests.

A wide diversity of animals make their

home in Theodore Roosevelt National Park. An abundance of native grasses provide sustenance for grazing animals both large and small while the tapestry of different habitats attracts a great number of birds. The terrain of the badlands creates microclimates of warm, dry slopes, relatively cool and wet juniper woodlands, and riverbottoms.

The park contains 100+ miles of trails. Take a hike and experience the same wild beauty and solitude of the badlands that captivated Theodore Roosevelt more than a century ago.

Theodore Roosevelt National Park is located in the badlands of western North Dakota. For more information, please visit: www.nps.gov/thro/index.htm

Best Tipper: Russell Crowe - The biggest story about Russell Crowe and the service industry involves a flying phone, but that apparently isn’t the norm. While on vacation in South Wales, Crowe stopped by the Carew Inn in Tenby for a quick pint with friends, and ended up leaving a £600 tip. The downside, we guess, is that he also played guitar and sang songs for the crowd.

Worst Tipper: Rachel Ray - tipped $1 on a $10 tab. Probably didn’t want to go over her $40 a day allowance.

Phillips 66 plans to buy as many as 2,000 railroad tank cars to ship oil from shale fields to refineries, yet another sign that the shale boom is reshaping the U.S. energy industry.

Phillips Chairman and CEO Greg Garland discussed the plan, targeted for the next year or two at the Citi Global Energy Conference this week.

Oil companies in fast-growing U.S. shale fields such as the Bakken, Eagle Ford, Niobrara and Permian have turned to rail, trucks and barges to haul crude because pipeline development has not kept up.

Phillips 66, the newly spun-off downstream arm of ConocoPhillips, has refineries on the East, West and Gulf Coasts, and Garland said the company currently refines about 100,000 barrels per day of shale oil but could handle 500,000 bpd. The initial goal is to increase delivery of shale crudes to Phillips refineries by 100,000 to 150,000 bpd within two years using railroad unit trains, he said. It’s

a pipeline on wheels. So, that could go to the Bakken. It could go to the Niobrara. It can shift as the opportunity shifts around the country.

Techniques including hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, have given drillers access to vast new deposits of so-called unconventional oil in shale rock formations, helping to reverse a decades-old decline in U.S. crude output.

Many analysts say rail will be a bigger part of the oil delivery picture for years because shale wells - often scattered, small and of uncertain lifespan - won’t justify pipeline construction.

Garland said the typical unit train would be 100 cars carrying 32,000 gallons (750 barrels) of crude. Using those estimates, 2,000 tankcars would equal about 150,000 barrels.

EnergyFactsUsed oil can be re-refined into good-as-new lubricating oil. Oil never wears out it just gets dirty.

The North Dakota Housing Finance Agency (NDHFA) is soliciting pre-applications for funding under the federal Neighborhood Stabilization Program (NSP). The Agency is anticipating that up to $600,000 will be available.

“The funds can be used for the purchase and redevelopment of foreclosed, abandoned or vacant buildings or land into permanent residential housing,” said Jolene Kline, NDHFA planning and housing development division director.

Eligible properties must be located in Bismarck, Minot, West Fargo, Mandan, Jamestown, Dickinson, Williston, Grafton, Wahpeton, Lincoln, Devils Lake, Valley City and Casselton; within 25 miles of the identified cities; or on the state’s four Indian Reservations.

Priority in this funding round will be given to applications that involve shovel-ready activities addressing the redevelopment of vacant, foreclosed or abandoned property and that benefit households at or below 50 percent of area median income. Project applicants must be able to demonstrate that any funds awarded will be for reimbursement of costs incurred prior to March 1, 2013.

The pre-applications must be received in the NDHFA office by the close of business on July 6, 2012. Materials can be found on the Agency’s website, www.ndhfa.org, or by contacting Jolene Kline

at [email protected], (701) 328-8080 or (800) 292-8621.

“Since 2008, North Dakota Housing has awarded more than $6.7 million dollars in NSP1 funds,” said Kline. “These grant dollars are providing safe, decent and

affordable housing for a workforce with modest incomes and households on a fixed income.”

The federal Housing and Economic Recovery Act of 2008 funded the Neighborhood Stabilization Program, known as NSP1.

Margaret McGlynn splits her time working as an oil company on-site geologist north of Dickinson and as a musician working on music and video projects from her Dickinson home.

Margaret McGlynn, 27, spends the bulk of her free time creating music.

Luckily, her job in the oil industry allows her to have two to three weeks at a time to invest in her creative projects.

McGlynn - her stage name is Mousey McGlynn - works as a on-site geologist or “mudlogger” for an oil company 70 miles north of Dickinson. After living on-site for two to three weeks, she returns to her home in Dickinson for a few weeks, where she works on her music projects in a makeshift recording studio in her brother’s old bedroom.

McGlynn described her most recent CD as pop but she has also recorded blues and jazz music.

“I really don’t want to confine myself because I’m a musician and I love music,” she said. “Whatever I feel like singing or enjoy singing is what I’m going to be singing at the time.”

On Monday, McGlynn will shoot a music video to her electro-pop song “Walked to the Water,” from her pop CD “Mousey,” at the Broadview Media Center in Minneapolis. She has rented a green screen and anticipates a 10-hour shoot. She hired an animator as well as director of photography, Keith Langsdorf.

However, she would be hesitant to sign a label at this stage in her career.

McGlynn was born in Ireland and attended an all-girls Catholic boarding

school in England from ages 11 to 16. She and her family moved to Dickinson in her junior year of high school when they learned of the low cost of real estate in North Dakota.

In 2008, McGlynn earned a bachelor of science degree in psychology with a minor in music from Roehampton University in London. She returned to North Dakota in 2009. Before getting a job with the oil industry, McGlynn worked two jobs: at a big box store and a bar. AP

Black Hills Over ViewTwo weeks ago we started a 10 week showcase of events and tourism information focusing on the Black Hills of South Dakota. We chose this area because it is a short drive from the Bakken and provides an endless amount of entertainment options. So whether you are trying to meet up with your loved ones for a weekend or getting out of town with some buddies for your time off. For the next 7 weeks we will highlight four activities and business each with a different feel, to make it easy for you we have broken the activities into four categories, Accommodations, Family, Nightlife, and Outdoors. We are making a special trips to the area to get interviews and pictures. Please let us know if there is anything you would like us to take a special look at.

Night LifePrairie Berry Winery - A toast to the Prairie Berry Winery, located near Mt Rushmore and Crazy Horse, for offering an amazing escape to rejuvenate and share a memorable experience with your loved one. Cosmopolitan Magazine feels that the “best place to kiss is in the tasting room…after toasting each other with a free glass of vino.” The Vojta family has been in the wine business for 5 generations, beginning their journey in 1876. They offer 15 grape, fruit and honey wines to taste and purchase at their Hill City vineyard. Featuring dry reds, whites, semi-sweet, and sweet fruit wines for complimentary daily tastings from 10 am till 7pm. Looking for a more in depth experience? Enjoy the “Family Table Tastings”. Open to groups of 2-12 people, your private host will seat you at our “Family Table” and guide you through three wines served in varietal specific glasses and individually paired with select foods. Your host will be happy to share tasting tips, plus more information about the featured items, the history of Prairie Berry Winery and the family behind it. Family Table Tastings may be scheduled for any day of the week. Ready to go? Total Time:1 hr 15 min/Prep:15 minCook:1 hr/Yield: 24 bars/Level:EasyIngredients

For the Crust:

Vegetable oil, for greasing1 1/2 sticks unsalted butter, diced2 cups all-purpose flour1/4 cup packed light brown sugar1/2 cup confectioner’s sugar, plus more for garnish1/4 teaspoon saltFor the Filling:

4 large eggs, plus 2 egg yolks2 cups granulated sugar1/3 cup all-purpose flour, sifted1 teaspoon grated lemon zest1 cup fresh lemon juice (from 8 lemons)DirectionsMake the crust: Position a rack in the middle of the oven and preheat to 350 degrees F. Grease a 9-by-13-inch pan with vegetable oil and line with foil, leaving a 2-inch overhang on all sides; grease the foil with oil. Pulse the butter, flour, both sugars and the salt in a food processor until the dough comes together, about 1 min-ute. Press evenly into the bottom and about 1/2 inch up the sides of the prepared pan, making sure there are no cracks. Bake until the crust is golden, about 25 minutes.

Meanwhile, make the filling: Whisk the whole eggs and yolks, sugar and flour in a bowl until smooth. Whisk in the lemon zest and juice. Remove the crust from the oven and reduce the temperature to 300 degrees F. Pour the filling over the warm crust and return to the oven. Bake until the filling is just set, 30 to 35 min-utes.

Let the bars cool in the pan on a rack, then refrigerate until firm, at least 2 hours. Lift out of the pan using the foil and slice. Dust with con-fectioners’ sugar before serving. Recipe courtesy

All your protection under one roof

Unscramble the first four words in each set of s c r a m b l e s . Then use the circled letters to unscramble the final word. Some of the words may unscramble into more that one word, but only one word is related to the puzzle.

But how do I do it?

The object is to insert the numbers in the boxes to satisfy only one condition: each row, column and 3x3 box must contain the digits 1 through 9 exactly once. What could be simpler?

The major aspect between Uranus and Pluto may bring up spiritual and existential issues that could cause inner tensions. Be authentic about what you really want deep down. Don’t give in to other’s demands.

GEMINI (May 22-June 21)The New Moon in your sign enables you to make a fresh start in any area of life you choose. The stars are encouraging this is other ways too. Whatever goals you have, this is your chance to catch the tide and see success happen. Your finances are highlighted from Wednesday, so you may want to invest in a project or even a romantic relationship, but may need support to do so. A major square between Uranus and Pluto pushes you to let go of painful emotions.

CANCER (June 22-July 22)It’s Solstice week which means the Sun moves into your sign, lifting your spirits and helping you to focus on what is important to you. There is also a New Moon in your spiritual zone which you can use to make a fresh start in your spiritual life. Join a meditation class, find a teacher or start a dream diary. You may not see eye-to-eye with your partner on Wednesday, but this should pass. Don’t make a mountain out of a molehill. It’s time to aim high!

LEO (July 23-Aug 22)Lots of subtle changes take place against a backdrop of even greater change. The New Moon is perfect for ‘amping’ up your social life and making new connections. Make this a priority. At the same time you are now at that point in the year when it helps to slow down and reflect on life. What you have achieved and what do you want for the future? The square between Uranus and Pluto suggests that a change in your beliefs may change your lifestyle.

VIRGO (Aug. 23 -Sept. 23)There’s plenty to keep you occupied as far as your career and life goals are concerned. The New Moon this week is perfect for making professional connections to key people, who may be able to help you get ahead. It’s also good if you are starting a new job or contract. Your social life perks up, so allow time to relax and have fun too. But you may find that love and romance, and unexpected events connected with them, rock your world.

LIBRA (Sept. 24 -Oct. 23)The New Moon this week coincides with the perfect time to take a course or class or even to teach one. Your career comes into focus too, so it may be a chance to get your priorities in order. Which life goals are most important. It may be time to make a start on them. SCORPIO (Oct. 24 - Nov. 22)One of the more sensitive areas of your chart and life is in focus. Your sex life, joint financial affairs and hidden agendas may be becoming a talking point. Whether you need advice, counseling or a chat with a good friend, it helps to get things off your chest. Later you may be keen to explore - a travel adventure may beckon. The square between Uranus and Pluto, suggests that a lifestyle change may transform you in positive ways. Time to do what you need to do.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 23 -Dec. 21)Partnerships and relationships have been in focus for some time, and this phase continues. The New Moon in this zone is perfect for helping you to make a fresh start whether with a new business partner or new lover. You can also take the relationships you have to a new level. Your career is picking up and if you are dating your love life is a riot. You seem to having a lot of fun. Uranus square Pluto encourages you to use your creativity to transform your finances.

CAPRICORN (Dec 22.- Jan. 20)Your health, work and lifestyle zone is highlighted, encouraging you to look more deeply at your core values - the ones that guide the decisions that run your day to day schedule. A New Moon in this zone is perfect for making changes to your diet, exercise habits, job and much more. Zero in on your goals and start to achieve them. You seem to be developing a deep psychic connection with someone too. Could be special. A move may change transform your agenda.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 21 -Feb. 19)Love, romance and creativity are buzzing right now in your life. If you are dating you seem to be having a great time. Yet you are also very aware of your values when it comes to getting up close and personal. Stay flexible - it’s not the time to get too involved just yet. A trine between the Sun and Neptune is helpful for using your imagination to improve your financial and work situation. On another note inspired thoughts or writings could rock your world.

PISCES (Feb. 20-Mar. 20)Your home and family life seem to be important in a positive and upbeat way. The New Moon in this zone is perfect for transforming your property or even for putting your house on the market.
