County Cultural Arts (pink) page of the planner. The item must be entered with the Personal Data Sheet completed. This is found on the white page next to the rules. The second division encourages you to show off your bargain-hunting skills. The two categories here are Casual Wear and Better Wear. It will be necessary to tell the costs, but these garments may be purchased anywhere – garage sales, thrift stores, final mark-down racks, or even free if you are lucky enough to get hand-me-downs. For this year, the contestants will model only 1 outfit. However, if they enter more than one category, they will carry the additional pieces on a hanger and show them to the audience. It will not be necessary to change outfits. As with the Cultural Arts competitions, the 1st and 2nd places in each category at the county level will compete at the Central Region level in September. And likewise, 1st and 2nd winners there move on to the State competitions. At the 2016 State Conference, Williamson County had 2 members with winning entries in the Fashion Review at the state level. CREATIVE WRITING - Are any of your members story-tellers? Do they have an artistic way to phrase things? Encourage them to put that in writing and enter the Creative Writing competition. Separate from Cultural Arts and Fashion Review is the Creative Writing competition. Information and rules for this competition are shown on the purple page of the planner. The entries for this competition must be submitted by June 1 to: Lucy Deal, VP for Programs Central Region, 119 Higdon Circle, Manchester, TN 37355. These entries are judged at the Central Region, not at the county level. Again, 1st and 2nd places in each of the 6 categories advance to the state competition. In 2016, Williamson County had 2 members who placed at the state level.

CULTURAL ARTS - Our yearbook/planner has 2 pink pages that cover the rules for the competitions that will be held at the Cultural Arts Day. The 44 areas of competition that may advance to the Central Region level are shown on the first pink page. Included on the second pink page is a list of 13 categories that are for county competition only (winners in these categories do not advance). Members may enter items they have made during the past year. Although they are allowed to enter only 1 item per category, they may enter as many categories as they wish.

A white page follows the pink pages and has the labels for the projects to be entered. It will make registration more efficient if the labels are completed prior to entering. These labels stay with the project if they move on to the regional competition. The items are judged to determine the county winners. First and second place winners may enter that same item in the Central Region competition to be held in Murfreesboro in September. First and second place winners at that competition are sent to the state competi-tion – this year to be held in Knoxville in November. The competition may sound stiff, even scary, but last year 4 Williamson County members took home ribbons. Two members claimed 1st place and 2 others took 2nd place at the state level. In addition to the Cultural Arts competitions, you are encouraged to enter the same items in the Williamson County Fair in August. FASHION REVIEW - In this competition, there are 2 divisions. The first division includes 9 categories for clothing or accessories that have been sewn during the past year by the person entering it. These categories are described on the back of the

Excitement and anticipation describe my feelings about our upcoming County Cultural Arts Day on Wednesday, June 14! The executive board of the county council volunteered to plan this event this year and something special is in the works.

Think girly. Think tea party. Soft pinks and white, china, little vases of tiny flowers… It will be every girly-girl’s tea party fantasy! Wouldn’t it be fun to “gussy up” for this festivity? …perhaps a dressy dress and a hat? In my possession is the hat my mother-in-law wore to my wedding -- this seems the perfect opportunity to resurrect it from the hatbox in my closet! Of course hats, gloves, and fancy dresses are optional, this may not be for you, but give the suggestion some consideration!

The County Cultural Arts Day is our one big “Hoopla” for Williamson County fce each year. I encourage you to participate by sub-mitting at least one entry in the cultural arts or fashion revue. I always appreciate the creativity and gorgeous entries displayed or modeled every year! We have such incredibly talented fce members in Williamson County! Invite a friend! The County Cultural Arts Day is always such an amazing, delightful day. It is the perfect opportunity to show-case Family and Community Education (fce) to our friends, neighbors, and other family members! Hope to see you there! move into our county. Our best method of recruitment is a personal invitation to visit one of our fce club meetings. So, I encourage you as you are out and about being involved in the community to reach out to these newcomers and invite them. We will all be blessed by making new friends. I’m happy to report that in March, several members of your clubs did “Walk Across Wil-liamson County”. Bettisu Lovett from the Arno club went to the celebration at the Park at Harlinsdale Farm and completed the 5K. Congratulations, Bettisu! Spring is just a wonderful time of the year! Enjoy each and every day as you are involved in your activities.

It has been good to meet with most of you during April as we discussed the vaccines that are needed as adults to make sure that we continue to be healthy. I want to encourage you to

participate in Cultural Arts in June. It is going to be slightly different this year but so much fun. I hope you will enjoy it and embrace the changes as we try to keep things fresh and exciting. I am so grateful for such active clubs that are so involved in serving our neighbors and our community. Please consider inviting friends and neighbors to be involved in your club. We are continually having more people

FROM THE PRESIDENT ELECT

Hello Everyone! WOW! Have I been busy – this winter and spring have been a whirl wind for me. My husband had his back-fusion surgery in February and is doing VERY well.

I have been working on a committee, headed up by Evelyn Hilton, helping prepare for a program on “Human Trafficking Awareness”. We have come a long way but we still have a long way to go before January 2018.

I am heading up a committee for the fce Williamson County Fair Booth. We are working on ideas for the theme, “County Wide, County Pride”.

I also want to THANK Mary Alice Weber, Patsy Watkins and the Executive Committee for the guidance and help in preparing for my position next year as President.

Then my husband and I are taking a much need vacation in May to Florida. WooHoo, beach here we come.

We Need Your Pictures!! The Williamson County fce fair booth committee needs your help. Theresa Bell, Sharon Jessop, Sue Lance, Evelyn Hilton, Bettisu Lovett and Mary Alice Weber are working on ideas for this year’s Williamson County fce Fair Booth. We will be contacting you for help sitting at the fce booth and passing along information about our Williamson County fce Clubs. The fair theme this year is “County Pride, County Wide”.

This is where you can help, as you go about your errands in our communities in Williamson County please take a few minutes to stop and have your picture taken in front/beside a historical landmark, chocolate factory, coffee house or a well know restaurant…. etc. The Cultural Arts theme this year is “Picture Me Caring in fce”, so…. maybe photos of you working in your community on a project or when you are helping someone in your community.

You can send your photos to me by 7-19-2017 either to my email or text a message (with the photo attached) to my cell phone. My email is: [email protected] and my cell number is: 615-579-6455. See Y’all At The Fair! Theresa Bell, Chairman

Are you aware that slavery exists today? That it has been found to be practiced here in Williamson County? Too often we consider this to be a horrible practice elsewhere and smugly think it couldn’t happen here. Unfortunately, we are not immune to it. As part of the National Association of Family and Community Education project, Williamson County fce is

partnering with the United Methodist Women at Franklin First UMC to inform our citizens of what is actually happening where we live. On January 11, 2018, we are co-hosting a Human Trafficking Awareness Day at Franklin First United Methodist Church. You will be hearing more about this as the plans develop.

Wildfire Kid’s Book Relief Project In January, a request was made by the Sevier County Public Library for books or monetary donations to replace books lost during the disastrous wildfire in that county in November. The project’s donations replaced the personal books of children and teens whose homes and personal possessions had been destroyed. In January, Williamson County fce responded by collecting $808 and forwarding it to the Library. All funds went directly into purchasing books and giving them to these children. The County Council thanks all members who shared. Below is the note received from the Director of the Sevier County Public Library.

Fairview Night

Fairview Night Club meets the 3rd Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m.. They have chosen to meet at the Fairview Library on a regular basis. The officers are Carol McClure, president.

Members are involved in a variety of community activities. During 2016 they participated in the Fairview Nature Fest and the Fairview Blood Drive for the American Red Cross. They also collected children’s books for the Mer-cy Community Health Care and Box Tops for Ed-ucation for Fairview Elementary. They plan to continue the 2016 projects with other projects for 2017 still in the development stages. However, they have already taken action on the following 2017 projects – support of the Fairview Library and contributions for the Wildfire Books Project for Sevier County.

Friendly Neighbors

It has been a great 2017 at Friendly Neighbors. we have learned so much from Patsy and Mary Alice. In February about 15 Hillsboro Club members joined us for lunch and a program from the BBB.

Snowbird Diane Short has just returned from Florida and will be taking over programs for the summer sharing VP of programs with Pat Post.

We are busy planning finger foods for the "Tea" at Cultural Arts in June as well as working on our projects.

Karen Gohn and Barbara Comer participated in Read Across America at the Fairview Library.

Fun Friday has started again as a friendly get-together to make crafts for our Christmas Bazaar. Sarah Lauricella has been awarded the Mildred Clarke scholarship for Leadership Retreat.

Although small in number, the Grassland club continues to meet on the third Wednesday on each month. In March, they did meet with Green Valley for the Better Business Bureau presentation. See picture at Green Valley report.)

Green Valley

In February, Green Valley held a White Elephant auction (above). The purpose was to raise funds to assist with 4-H Camp expenses in the summer. The efforts produced $350. At the March meeting (below), Rene Gould, Manager of the Better Business Bureau, brought guests who spoke on business practices and scam warnings in the community. This was a joint meeting with the Arno club, the Brentwood club and the Grassland club. Not only was their presentation timely and informative, they also provided

Green Valley, continued At every meeting, a collection designated to help at My Friends House is taken. This has been a long-standing tradition and an on-going project that provides daily household items, back-to-school needs, Christmas gifts, etc.

Hillsboro

In March, the Hillsboro met with the Friendly Neighbors club in Nolensville. (See picture at Friendly Neighbors report.) Long time 50 year-member of Hillsboro FCE Jane Parham passed away, Jan 22.
