The William Hogarth School
1
Letter from Chair of Governors
Dear School Leader
Thank you for your interest in the role of Headteacher at The William Hogarth School in Chiswick, West London.
I hope this pack will convey something of what makes our school special and precious to pupils, parents, staff
and governors alike. I hope, too, that it will help you decide whether you might be the person to lead us on the
next stage of our journey.
After fifteen years, our Headteacher has decided it’s time for her to retire. She will leave the school in a strong
position, having successfully led it through growth from an infant school with 55 pupils to become a full two
form entry primary school. As a believer in distributed leadership, she has established and empowered a talented
management team who will give strong and committed support to her successor.
Ours is a diverse school, socially and ethnically, and in many other ways. We prize this diversity, which we
believe enriches the learning environment for everyone in the school. As our vision statement says, we are
ambitious for all our pupils, whatever their background, ability, and particular needs, and we want them to acquire
a love of learning that will last a lifetime and enable them to fulfil their potential.
Ofsted rated us Good at our last inspection in 2014. I encourage you to read the inspection report, which we felt
was a pretty fair assessment. The inspectors said we had a Good capacity to improve further, and we’ve been
striving to put that into practice. We believe an Outstanding rating is within our grasp, and we’re looking for a
Headteacher who can embrace that aspiration and lead us to achieve it.
Our next Headteacher will be someone who shares our vision of a happy, safe and aspirational community. You’ll
need a disciplined mind, an ability to engage effectively with all kinds of people, and an eye for detail that always
keeps the big picture in sight. You’ll have broad experience in school leadership, with good knowledge of the
financial, educational and practical challenges facing schools today. But most important, you’ll love children,
and love helping them succeed.
We can offer you a committed and skilled management team, an experienced and knowledgeable governing body,
a supportive and engaged parent community, and around 350 lively and unique children. Do come and meet us,
and see if you think we can do great things together.
Yours sincerely,
Andy Rooney

About The William Hogarth School
The William Hogarth School is named after Chiswick’s most famous resident, the 18th Century artist, satirist and
social critic, whose home is just yards away from the school. We draw a variety of inspiration from this
connection, ranging from classes named after past and present artists and our dedicated art room, to our
determination to provide opportunities for all, including the most disadvantaged, to succeed.
We are a two form entry community primary school, located in the heart of Chiswick, West London. Our priority
admission area encompasses both multimillion pound properties and a large social housing estate, and we also
welcome pupils from outside the PAA. Our school community reflects the diversity that makes London such an
exciting place to live and work. We pride ourselves on our inclusivity, by which we mean our dedication to
enabling children of all backgrounds and abilities to achieve their potential. We are proactive in our approach to
SEND, with a dedicated SENCO prioritising early identification and intervention.
The current school began in 2001 as, in effect, a one form entry infant school. Over the next few years we grew
steadily, first into a full 1FE primary, and then to a 2FE school as pupil numbers in the area increased. We sent
our first two-form year 6 pupils on to secondary school in July 2015. Our current Head Teacher has led the
school throughout this evolution, and will retire this summer leaving the school in a strong and stable position.
Our buildings date from the 1950s, providing light and spacious classrooms together with extensive and well-
equipped outside play areas.
Our neighbourhood
Chiswick is a thriving and attractive area of West London, with a busy shopping centre on Chiswick High Road,
extensive green space, and the Thames on our doorstep. We have Chiswick House and Grounds and Hogarth’s
House close by, a public swimming pool and library, and lots of coffee shops and restaurants in the vicinity. As
well as making Chiswick a pleasant place to spend time, this also provides lots of opportunities for creative school
activities outside the classroom.
Communications links are excellent: there are tube, Overground and National Rail stations within easy walking
distance of the school, multiple bus routes along the High Road, and easy access to the M4, M3, and North
Circular Road.

Our community
As a community school we take seriously our calling to be an asset to the wider community. We regularly take
part in activities in the neighbourhood and beyond, such as carol singing on the High Road or gardening in the
kitchen garden of Chiswick House. Our summer fair usually takes place on one of the public green spaces near
the High Road and draws in people from all over Chiswick. We have a good relationship with our local parish
church, and also with a range of other places of worship in the area.
The six community primary schools in Chiswick enjoy a strong collaborative relationship, and we trust that our
new Head Teacher will want to maintain and enhance this collaboration.
We’ve asked pupils, parents and staff for their thoughts on what makes our school special, and what they’d like
to see in our new Head Teacher. Here’s some of what they had to say:
Quotes from staff
“I was really keen to be offered a job at the school. It feels like a ‘human’ school where all
staff care about the mixed group of children who come here”
“A head teacher needs to be a visible presence around the school and be someone
who appreciates and works with the dedicated human resources committed to
doing the best for the children”
“A headteacher who is inspirational, aspirational, compassionate and keen to nurture the wonderfully warm,
friendly and hardworking children in our care and continue the legacy of giving each child the opportunity to
shine”
“It’s quite simply the best school I have ever worked in”
“Values the children, ambitious for them and not just results. Strong sense of humour/not taking themselves too
seriously, down to earth, approachable, values the importance of individuality in both pupils and staff. The
children are amazing. The staff is a great team (the TAs are amazing and go above and beyond). There are several
coffee shops nearby for those dreaded O***** visits. The office staff will be your backbone. The Governors are
friendly! (both supportive and critical). You will not find better parents than those that make up ‘The Friends of
The William Hogarth”

Quotes from pupils
“You should come to work at our school because the children are not afraid to share their ideas
and they would do anything to make the life of the Head Teacher easier. If you think that you
have what it takes to be a generous but strict Head teacher who has a lot of patience and is
open with their ideas, then feel free to apply”
“William Hogarth School is a good school because we are all kind and we are all responsible. People should work at our school because we
all try our best no matter what. A good Head teacher must be funny, kind, smart and patient with children. Most importantly, they must tell
good jokes”
“William Hogarth is the place to be because it is fun! We try our best even if we wake up on the
wrong side of the bed. A good Head teacher should be a snazzy dresser…and have good hair”
“You should come to work here because the children are just great! Maybe you could come here to make us
the best school ever? A Head teacher must be funny, patient and kind. They should be a person who can give
children the chance to be the best that they can be. If you are clever and responsible, sign up! And you get
paid”
“At The William Hogarth School, the teachers are kind and great at teaching stuff.
A good Head teacher has to be clever enough to answer children’s questions. They should be
smart, funny and good-looking”
“At William Hogarth School we have lots of friends to play with and we always try our best, no matter what
it is. A good Head teacher is kind and funny… and smart… and they have to be very patient”
“William Hogarth is a good school. We have a big playground and nice teachers. What
more could you want? A good Head teacher is kind and always gives people a chance”
“At William Hogarth the children always try their best. A good Head teacher is always funny and kind. They
should also be responsible and healthy”
“A good Head teacher gives people the chance to be the best that they can be. A good Head teacher has to be
clever enough to answer lots of people’s questions. A good Head teacher has to be patient. A good Head teacher has to
have care and respect”

Our vision and commitments
We revised our vision statement in 2015, based on wide consultation, so it’s an up to date reflection of what we
believe our school is and should be:
We are an inspiring learning community with high expectations, where all feel safe and happy and everybody
has the opportunity to unlock and realise their potential.
This leads naturally to the commitments we make to the school community:
We will:
provide a happy, stimulating and safe environment
create an attractive, well-resourced environment where diversity is valued and respected
value every child and cater for their individual needs in a nurturing way
promote co-operation and respect for each other
equip all pupils with the skills necessary to promote independence, self-discipline and confidence
have high expectations of all our school community and so promote high standards
ensure all pupils have access to a broad and balanced curriculum
track and monitor each child’s academic progress to ensure maximum academic achievement
involve parents fully in all aspects of their children’s education
work together with the whole community to build on our achievements

START DATE: SEPTEMBER 2017
SALARY: GROUP 2, L17-22, £60,905 - £68,454
Plus an uplift of £4,300 for an exceptional candidate*
The William Hogarth School is a small and successful primary school in an affluent yet diverse area of West
London. Our long-serving Headteacher is retiring, and we are looking for a similarly inspiring leader to replace
her.
We have a multicultural intake and are proud of our caring and inclusive ethos. We were rated Good by Ofsted
in January 2014 and we believe we have made significant further progress towards an Outstanding rating, working
with our partner schools in the Challenge Partnership. We have focussed relentlessly on raising achievement at
all levels of the School. For instance, we have produced impressive results with our EAL and disadvantaged
pupils, deploying a range of teaching and other methods, such as our successful breakfast and activity clubs.
Driving the School’s continued improvement, and enabling us to increase progress and raise attainment for pupils
of all abilities are both essential requirements of the role. As a leader of an able senior management team, you
will be working with a talented and committed school staff. You will have the support and encouragement of an
experienced governing body and an engaged school community. Finally, Governors will expect you to maintain
the School’s strong commitment to inclusivity and mutual support, and we are keen for you to maintain our strong
links with other Chiswick schools.
