Alex, an Eastern Screech-Owl, was brought to the Wild-life Center in 2007. She had been found alongside a road in Wythe County. Alex had a left-wing fracture and dam-age to both eyes. While the wing fracture healed, Alex cannot be released back to the wild because of her limited vision.

Alex helps drive home the message that crit-ters don’t need litter. Trash, even biodegrad-able things like an apple core, draws animals to dangerous roadways — placing wildlife in the paths of oncoming cars.

The Wildlife Center of Virginia

“Corny,” a Red Cornsnake, was taken from the wild as a newly hatched snake in Charlotte County, Virginia. She was kept for more than a year before her captors grew bored with her and brought her to the Center. Her life-experience in captivity makes her unable to survive in the wild. In her new permanent home at the Center, Cornelius reminds us that wild animals shouldn’t be kept as pets.

The Wildlife Center of Virginia cares for thousands of animals each year, including more than 20 permanent residents whose injuries or behavioral modifications mean they cannot be returned to the wild.

These animals – including hawks, owls, opossums, snakes, and turtles – are important ambassadors for the Center. Many appear with our education staff at school assemblies, in classrooms, and at other events across Virginia. Other animals greet visitors to the Center’s hospital clinic in Waynesboro.

Through Caring for Critters, generous supporters of the Wildlife Center “adopt” one of these education animals. These sponsorships provide important support and help with the ongoing feeding and care of the Center’s educa-tion animals and the patients we treat each year.

Caring for Critters makes a unique and memorable gift … for a child … a student … friends and family. A sponsorship may also be made to an entire class at your local school.

As a Caring for Critters Sponsor, you [or your gift recipi-ent] will receive a special Adoption Packet, including:

• Your sponsored animal’s biography;• A photo of the animal;• Detailed information about the animal’s species; • Occasional email updates on your sponsored ani-

mal’s activities; and • A personalized certificate of sponsorship.

A six-month Caring for Critters sponsorship is $25. A full-year sponsorship is $50.

Questions? Email [email protected]

Please help support Alex, Cornelius, and the rest of the Wildlife Center’s education ambassadors by adopting one or more of these wonderful animals.

While patients being treated at the Wildlife Center stay, on average, 10 to 12 days, some require extended care. If you sponsor a “Special Animal in Need”, we’ll select one of our patients that we expect will need extended care at the Center. You [or your gift recipient] will receive a regular Caring for Critters sponsorship packet … plus email updates on your patient’s status.

Add a Wildlife Center of Virginia t-shirt to your sponsorship gift and show your support for wildlife … and for the Center.

The Wildlife Center is pleased to offer

wildlife finger puppets crafted by

Folkmanis … the creator of innovative

and imaginative puppets since 1976.

Puppets range from four inches tall (for the owl) to seven inches long (for the opossum). These fuzzy treasures are perfectly suited for kids … and “kids at heart.” Whether starring in a child’s wild-animal play, or sitting atop a computer monitor at work, these puppets are a delight!

The Wildlife Center is pleased to offer eight different wildlife pup-pets — a representation of the patients that we treat each year. The puppets include an eagle, an owl, a robin, a bear, an opossum, a squirrel, a toad, and a turtle.

$6 each … or any four for $20.
