INTRODUCTION
Zambia is often referred to as The Real Africa. Of course all other safari areas are very real
too but Zambian safaris are rightfully distinguished by the expedition of old adventure that
they deliver under the care of exceptional guides in out of the way wilderness areas teeming
with wildlife. The atmosphere carries back to the camps as well, unlike other Southern Africa
destinations there is still a preponderance of bushcamps, small and intimate, roughly half the
size of a typical Botswana luxury camp which are considered small anywhere other than
Zambia. They retain a rustic charm yet still deliver extreme comfort and pampering service
while maintaining a wonderful on the ground connection to the wilderness areas where they
are placed.
Zambian guiding standards are rivaled only by Zimbabwe. Problems in Zimbabwe actually
led to many guides moving over to Zambia and the result has been exceptional skills being
cultivated in the local Zambian guides. South Luangwa is the birthplace of walking safaris
and it is a rare treat to walk in areas where animals are habituated to humans on foot. The
area also offers outstanding game drives, both day and night.

EXPLORE THE WILDSIDE South Luangwa is without doubt one of Africa’s most game rich parks but unlike most National
Parks there are satellite bushcamps where you can have the entire park to yourself and the
rules allow the freedom of both walking safaris and night drives.
This park is a valley formed by the South Luangwa River, which teems with hippos and
crocodiles. The park is the birthplace of walking safaris, pioneered in the 1950’s and the area
remains the ideal location for a safari on foot. Placing your feet on the ground provides a
connection to the African wilderness that is just not possible riding in a vehicle. You will be
in big game areas and expect to view from foot the large mega fauna species such as
elephant, buffalo, giraffe, and possibly lion as well as discover the small delights that are
missed on game drives.
This region is also stellar for game drives and the quality is unbeatable because you will not
typically see another vehicle having all sightings to yourself. This area is famed for its night
drives when the spotlight often finds the secretive nocturnal creatures and the area is
especially known for its leopard sightings.

You will have a diverse experience exploring from and between three bushcamps. Together
they make a great circuit. Each is a small and intimate camp (4 chalets/tents each) run by
The Bushcamp Company, known to have some of the best guides in existence and their
camps are ideally placed for a circuit in a remote area of the park where you are unlikely to
see any other people or vehicles – truly the ideal way to commune with the wild. You will
start with time at Mfuwe Lodge, a prime area for game drives and to observe wildlife right
from the lodge.

MFUWE LODGE 2 NIGHTS - SOUTH LUANGWA NATIONAL PARK, ZAMBIA
Mfuwe Lodge is an ideal home for your last night in
South Luangwa National Park, with 18 luxury en-suite
thatched chalets, each with a private decking area that
overlooks a lagoon that attracts abundant wildlife and
game from the African bush. This lodge is renowned
for its in camp wildlife viewing so great sightings can
come at any time.
This is in the central area of the park that is known for
its outstanding wildlife concentrations. You will have
an afternoon/night game drive before heading out the
next morning.
Scattered along two lagoons' shady banks lie each
chalet from where you can enjoy your own private piece
of Africa. Secluded covered verandas look out over
wallowing hippo and thirsty game in the lagoons, while
the newly refurbished African interiors are the perfect
place to wind down with their comfortable sitting rooms
and en-suite bathrooms with panoramic walk-in
showers.

The Wild Source • 801 14th Street, Golden, CO 80401 • 1-720-497-1250
Each chalet is decorated with superb attention to detail
and is equipped with everything from refrigerator to
shampoo and mosquito repellent. Sunken bath tubs
have private views of the lagoon.
The game-viewing potential at Mfuwe Lodge and the
surrounding area is second-to-none. Walking safaris
can be arranged on request, but the majority of outings
are game drives, allowing guests to explore as much of
this prolific region of the Luangwa Valley as possible.
Drives are led by our experienced team of guides,
setting out at first light, and then again in the late
afternoon when the wildlife is at its most active. After
sundowners, spotlights are used to pick out a new cast
of nocturnal creatures.
Dinner is sometimes served by lamplight on the
poolside deck overlooking the lagoon. There is a large
pool, great for relaxing and typically with views of game
while you swim.

ZUNGULILA BUSHCAMP 2 NIGHTS - SOUTH LUANGWA NATIONAL PARK, ZAMBIA
Zungulila is a charming camp that embodies the
essence of old Africa and a bygone era, with
breathtaking views onto the Kapamba River and an
expansive plain where natural springs attract huge
herds of game. Zungulila is eminently peaceful and
remote.
If you long to explore Africa as it used to be, Zungulila
is a great camp for you. One of Zambia’s most talented
guides, Fanuel, is typically based at Zungulila and will
lead you on foot through some of the park’s most
untouched wilderness, where large herds of buffalo
roam the grassy plains and thirsty elephants come to
drink at the springs and along the river.
Zambia Walking and Water Safari led by Darcie Carr of The Wild Source 12
The Wild Source • 801 14th Street, Golden, CO 80401 • 1-720-497-1250
With limited roads in the area, activities are focused
around walking, but to get even further afield, day and
night game drives are also on offer. When a camp has
8 guests Bushcamp Company now brings in a second
walking guide to ensure flexibility and intimate walks.
You can also relax in chairs placed in the shallow river
as you just soak it all in.
Limited to eight guests in four spacious tents Zungulila is
a very intimate camp. Built under thatch roofs, each
shaded tent has its own private bamboo veranda with
immense views over an impressive variety of wildlife
coming to the river. With stylish interiors, en-suite
bathrooms, hot-and-cold running water, outdoor showers
and sunken plunge-pool you can enjoy your creatures
and your creature comforts in this classic tented
bushcamp.

KAPAMBA BUSHCAMP 2 NIGHTS - SOUTH LUANGWA NATIONAL PARK, ZAMBIA
Kapamba is the most luxurious of the Bushcamps, yet
it is still wonderfully isolated and is known for superb
game viewing and stunning scenery. Remote and
romantic along the Kapamba River.
Set on the banks of the shallow, spring-fed Kapamba
River the camp is surrounded by some of the park’s
richest wildlife. Watching an elephant take a dip in the
river can be quite an experience when you’re lounging
in your own private plunge pool. The central bar and
dining room is positioned under a huddle of matumi and
sausage trees, with a wide deck that stretches out with
views of the Kapamba River. And if that’s still not close
enough for you, why not enjoy your G&T from the
middle of the river itself, your feet dipped in the cool,
crystal shallows.

Get out into the bush and explore the rich diversity of
the surrounding area on guided morning and afternoon
walks, or jump into a Land Rover for a driving safari
(day or night). When a camp has 8 guests Bushcamp
Company now brings in a second walking guide to
ensure flexibility and intimate walks.
The charm and romance of Kapamba is most obvious
in its four spacious en-suite chalets. Cool, simple and
utterly original, these entirely open-fronted rooms boast
wide verandas with river views, twin showers and
sunken stone plunge pools – the ultimate in bush
indulgence.
Clever wrought-iron shutters are drawn each evening
so that you can enjoy the sights and sounds of the
African night without worrying about unwanted visitors
wandering into your room whilst you sleep. Two of the
chalets have twin beds (queen-sized beds), while the
other two have king-sized doubles.

BILIMUNGWE BUSHCAMP 2 NIGHTS - SOUTH LUANGWA NATIONAL PARK, ZAMBIA
Bilimungwe Bushcamp is nestled in a riverine forest
along the picturesque banks of the Luangwa River.
This is a remote and unspoilt area and an ideal base
for walking safaris. The rustic dining area and fully
stocked bar are constructed on raised decking with
views of Bilimungwe’s permanent waterhole and
abundant game. Most importantly Bilimungwe Camp is
the base for Manda Chisanga, an award winning guide
who is as good as it gets for walking safaris.
The camp is made of 4 very comfortable reed and
thatch chalets with en-suite shower, toilet and double
vanities. Each chalet has two queen sized beds with
mosquito nets. This camp was just re-built in 2011 with
brilliant results and each chalet looks out on very active
waterholes.
When a camp has 8 guests Bushcamp Company now
brings in a second walking guide to ensure flexibility
and intimate walks.

AMANZI CAMP LOWER ZAMBEZI, ZAMBIA – 3 NIGHTS
OPTIONAL EXTENSION
Lower Zambezi National Park offers a stunning
environment and variety of safari activities. The
Zambezi River is the draw as large quantities of
animals come to the water in the dry season. The river
can be explored by both pontoon boat and canoe.
Fishing is tremendous. The rich Zambezi has also
produced the growth of towering woodlands that are
open and ideal for walking and game driving in a
different environment than most other safari locations.
Night drives are also possible creating the opportunity
to see the full diversity of wildlife and increasing the
chances of seeing active predators on the hunt.
Dry season game viewing is top notch in this area.
Amanzi is located in a top game viewing area that is
remote with only two other camps using this special
part of the park. The area has a deserved reputation for
outstanding leopard viewing. Elephants and buffalo
abound right around camp. Night drives are also
productive with civets and genets commonly sighted.
Excellent guides deliver a fantastic safari, taking full
advantage of the wide range of activities.
Zambia Walking and Water Safari led by Darcie Carr of The Wild Source 18
The Wild Source • 801 14th Street, Golden, CO 80401 • 1-720-497-1250
Amanzi camp is situated directly on the banks of the
Zambezi's Ngwenya channel just two kilometers
downstream from its sister camp, Anabezi. The name
"Amanzi" means water and with the intimate position
on the Zambezi proves a fitting name.
The camp consists of 4 tents, each with two double
beds on a raised teak deck. The tents have an indoor
shower and bathroom, as well as a private sitting area
and balcony overlooking the Zambezi.
The camp is intimate, yet private with the tents
generously spaced and connected with a raised
walkway to the main area.
The main area offers stunning views of the mosaic of
islands that are home to a group of majestic elephant
bulls. The main area leads down to the pool deck which
sits just above the Zambezi River.

ETHICS & PHILANTHROPY
NJOZI CAMP - TANZANIA
We believe that lasting conservation can only succeed if local communities receive sufficient
benefits for protecting the land, and that responsible tourism can be a resource for local
empowerment and improvement for quality of life.
From predator-livestock conflict research to school sponsorships, The Wild Source has a
wide range of programs that focus on enriching the lives of the people and conserving wildlife
where we operate safaris. Costs of these programs come from our bottom line and are not
packaged into our proposals. The following pages highlight our efforts:
The Wild Source Tanzania operates Njozi Camp, a seasonal camp that moves with the great
migration around the Serengeti ecosystem. We exclusively hire local staff who
enthusiastically provide the warmth and hospitality that creates a unique experience at our
camp. Through empowerment of staff and competitive wages, we serve as a model for good
practice in the industry. The camp supports a staff of 13 Tanzanians, including a Camp
Manager and multiple chefs. It is also the first camp to employ a local wildlife biologist.

LOCAL WILDLIFE BIOLOGIST ON STAFF - TANZANIA
The Wild Source is the first safari operator to create a program to develop local wildlife
biologists. Wildlife research in Africa continues to be dominated by foreign researchers and
it is a challenge for young local wildlife biologists to find a first opportunity. We have made
the commitment to hire graduates from The College of African Wildlife Management in
Arusha, Tanzania. In addition to a salary The Wild Source provides a research base using
our Njozi Camp and housing/feeding the wildlife biologists. We also provide vehicle use, fuel,
and the various equipment needed by the researchers.
Our first wildlife biologists are Sosy
Maria and Fadhil Magoye (who
doubles as a guide). These young
biologists are in the second year of
researching the big cats of Ndutu
and Serengeti.
We are determining how to identify
each individual in the field by utilizing
spot and/or whisker patterns. Each
big cat sighting is marked by
recording GPS coordinates so we
can determine ranges and favorite
haunts for individuals. We are also
studying the hunting behavior of the
big cats and evaluating potential
impacts of the tourism industry.
We have partnered with Image Based Ecological Information System (IBEIS) on the
development of a cheetah recognition software program. IBEIS is a group founded by
professors from Princeton University, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and University of
Illinois - Chicago. This team has perfected Stripespotter software which can identify individual
zebra and giraffe. Next up IBEIS wanted to test their software for identification of cheetah.
The Wild Source biologists photograph each cheetah from different sides and document
unique spot patterns to definitively identify individuals. Our team provides IBEIS with baseline
profiles of the cheetah that we have identified. To test the program, we submit a collection
of random photos of cheetah contributed by our guests. The software can then be tested to
see how successfully it can match photos to our known cheetah. Once the software is proven
to be accurate it can be used to help researchers in the field instantly know the identity (or
realize it is a cheetah never previously documented). It is believed even young cubs have
definitive spot patterns on their legs so over time we may be able to trace the history and
lineage of adult cheetah to when we first saw them as small cubs. Eventually tourists will be
able to return home and scan their photo against a database to quickly identify the individual
and receive any life history that has been recorded.

PREDATOR/LIVESTOCK CONFLICT RESEARCH
Human/wildlife conflict over livestock is the biggest factor in declining African predator
populations. The Wild Source’s Bill Given is a leading researcher tackling this huge issue.
Bill is a Research Associate of the Denver Zoo and member of the Botswana based Kalahari
Research & Conservation program. Bill has been conducting research on African lions and
their conflict over cattle. In phase one of our research we have been placing satellite collars
on lions that are captured on cattle lands and re-located into protective game
reserves/national parks. We then monitor their movements and have documented the poor
results of simply moving cattle predating lions.
In our second phase, we are testing a method known as conditioned taste aversion (CTA).
The CTA research focuses on treating lions with a carefully constructed beef bait that
contains a veterinary medication that makes the predator feel as if it has been food poisoned.
The technique is tapping into a sub-conscious evolutionary defense mechanism that exists in
all species, and serves to protect against the consumption of a deadly food. After surviving
such an event a consumer will avoid the food just based on smell. Bill has worked with
captive lions, cougars and Mexican wolves, and in all cases been able to use the CTA method
to have them cease to eat a food based on smell. There is no doubt that this evolutionary
defense mechanism exits. The research question is can we mimic nature well enough to use
the CTA process as a viable management tool to mitigate predator conflict with livestock?
If you wish to make a contribution, tax deductible donations can be made through the Denver
Zoological Foundation, which is a non-profit 501-c (3) organization. The Zoo takes no
overhead, so 100% of your donation goes directly to our lion research. Contact us for details
so we can ensure your donation is properly ear-marked for our research.

ZAMBIA SCHOOL STUDENT SPONSORSHIP
The Wild Source currently sponsors three Zambian students for their secondary education.
Esnart is at Mfuwe Day Secondary School, while Jere and Matthews are fully supported at
top Zambian boarding schools. We maintain these sponsorships through the non-profit,
Charity Begins at Home, in conjunction with The Bushcamp Company. Much focus is on
supporting Mfuwe Day, the only secondary school near South Luangwa National Park.
Mfuwe Day has benefitted from construction doubling class rooms, providing dormitories and
meal programs. Every guest who visits the Bushcamp Company contributes to the Luangwa
Conservation and Community Fund—a daily fee of $10 per person—which funds anti-
poaching efforts inside of the national park and also finances community initiatives. While a
visit to the Bushcamps results in a direct contribution, there are many ways to get involved
including a visit to the school. The program has increased from 100 sponsored students to
350, and has just begun a sponsorship program for college and vocational schooling. Esnart,
featured below, supports her disabled father, as well as attends school full time. Through our
sponsorship, she no longer walks the 6 miles to school every day after receiving her bicycle.
She also receives a lunch meal through the 700 Day Scholars feeding program. She aspires
to become a math teacher.

TANZANIA GUIDE INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
As a highly-respected leader in the guiding industry, The Wild Source Tanzania Managing
Director Deo Magoye, wanted to serve as a mentor to promising young guides. His intern
program selects recent graduates to provide them with field training and the opportunity to
shadow guides of The Wild Source. Nothing beats real world experience, and to be mentored
by The Wild Source guide team is an incredible opportunity. While cultivating local talent,
Deo also ensures that the message of conservation continues beyond our lifetime as the next
generation of guides develop an ethic of appreciation for their natural heritage.
In 2015 we have three interns participating in our program - Henry, Livingstone and Robert.
