The death of Thomas Kelly, who died after being punched by an intoxicated man at Kings Cross last year has resonated with people across the state. He was by all accounts a smart, handsome and well-loved young man on the verge of starting his adult life. The grief of his parents is obvious, and they are determined that his death not be in vain, but lead to lasting change. The man who killed him was sentenced to six years imprisonment for manslaughter, with a minimum of four years, plus an extra 14 months in prison for assaulting four other people. This sentence caused many people to question our sentencing regime. Immediately following the handing down of the sentence, I requested the Director of Public Prosecutions consider an appeal and later that week he announced he would appeal against the sentence, and ask the Court of Criminal Appeal to issue a guideline judgment. Guideline judgments set a sentencing benchmark for judges, and guide judges in similar future cases in their sentencing. The government has also approved the drafting of new unlawful assault laws, which would cover cases of assaults causing death - even if the offender did not intend or foresee the victim's death - with a maximum penalty of 20 years. Alcohol-related assaults fell last year and the government will build on the many measures it has implemented in order to reduce these assau~s further. I hope that the new laws and the attention to this terrible case will send a message to drunken louts that this type of behaviour is unacceptable and potentially deadly. A song tribute to Bennelong
Dear Sir, I write regarding the TWT
promotion of our wonderful historical aboriginal friend whose grave has recently been discovered in Putney by Dr Peter Mitchell.
May I let readers know that the locally wntten song 'Mr Bennelong' has so far reached the top 30 finalists of the Australian Song Contest (Australia category) as judged by the Australian Songwriters Association.
Should any kind of website ever evolve as a tribute to Bennelong I would certainly consider the song's use for that website. Can't think of a more fitting recipient of recognition than our Bennelong.
The efforts made by TWT and Peter Mitchell in bringing forth Bennelong's story are to be congratulated. A true unsung hero, till now at least.

No gaol for the fire setting kids
Dear Sir, I'm writing to you to dis-
cuss the im ortance p of funding treatment models for young fire setters.
During October we experienced one of the worst bush fire emergencies I have ever seen. Even more troubling, there were at least seven young people • ranging from 8 years old to 17 years old, charged with starting fires that caused significant damage.
The public discourse has been about how to punish these young people, but I'd like to see how we can treat them and turn these youngsters into productive members of society.
They should be punished, the devastation caused by some of the fires was horrific. However, the punishment needs to include rehabilitation. The young people that set fires often have a victim mentality and when they light the fire, they are only concerned with burning down the world that has wronged them.
Throwing them in gaol, with no treatment, is only going to grow that victim mentality. Treatment is the only way to make sure they don't reoffend.
To treat them, we have to identify what sort of fire setter they are. The 'DynamicBehavioural Model' (DBM) de-
•
scribes two different types of fire setters: non-pathological and pathological fire setters. Once we have identified the type, we then need to match them with the appropriate treatment program. Treatment can be done in a locked facil-ity, similar to a gaol, but with a focus on rehabilitation.
The DBM also provides us with aspects of their lives that we must assess to commence treatment. To understand their motivations when setting fires it's important to analyse their personality and individual characteristics; family and social circumstances; and their immediate environmental conditions. These three aspects of their lives are the vari ables that interact to produce fire setting or increase the risk of fire setting.
We have to invest in treatment models that work. In order for juvenile fire setters from both socio-economically limited and wealthy families to receive services, I recommend that State Fire Marshals sponsor the development of the Fire Intervention Mentor Model (FIMM).
This model will allow for the training of key mental health personnel in various municipalities. These mental health personnel will be responsible for training other mental health personnel in more out· lying districts.
My hope is that this invest· ment will mean the next time a bush fire emergency is experi enced, less young people will be implicated in setting fires.

Local tennis association looks back over 90 years
THE NORTH Western Suburbs Tennis Association (a volunteer non-profit community based sports organisation) was inaugurated in 1922.
Our first President was W. Setchell and joint Secretary and Competition were Lyall Campbell and Harold Childs.
Most of the credit for forming an association must be given to the Johnstone broth· ers (John, Jim and Henry) who lived on an orchard property in Buffalo Road, Ryde.
Henry Johnstone became president of the association from 1926 to 1936.
We are affiliated with Tennis NSW and the NSW Hardcourt Tennis Association.

The executive have been working short staffed for a few years now and this has put more pressure and workload on to the same volunteers over time.
We need the support of players (social and competi tion), members, parents of our juniors and any locals, to continue to provide services to the communities, the three centres operate from within.
Our annual general meeting will be held next Monday (November 25) at Meadowbank Association Courts, Constitu -

THE HONORARY positions to be vacated are: president, treasurer, vice president, secretary, various competition secretaries and executive members.
We are in need of a treasurer as our current treasurer is retiring after serving over 1 0 years.
Our executive members are also need volunteers to attend meetings held once a month (except for January) and assist wherever possible.
If you can contribute in any way by joining the executive committee that would be greatly appreciated by the existing committee members. Phone Judy Richards on 0402 487 691 or Lyn Gudmunson on 0415 823 558 for more information.

He had a full week in State Parliament introducing three new Bills which were debated well into the night.
They are the Motor Dealers and Repairers Bill and the Resident Communities Bill which covers residential retirement parks and estates and caravan retirement parks.
Third item which will affect all residents living in apartment blocks is the Strata and Community Title Law Reform Bill which will update strata buildings laws and regulations.

Ryde SES Community Engagement Officer Warren Smith said WOW Day was a great way for the community to show its support for our volunteers and an opportunity to further promote safety during floods and storms.
"Storm season began last month and continues until March so now is the time to take some proactive measures to ensure your homes are stormsafe rather than be reactive during a storm", he said.
The basic steps people can follow to prepare for storms include:
SECURE or store loose items around the yard or on the balcony
TRIM over hanging tree branches
CLEAN your gutters and downpipes every six months
ENSURE your drains are free from blockages so water can flow freely when it rains
CHECK that your roof is in good repair e very year
MAKE sure your insurance is up to date
PREPARE your tour Emergency Kit
For emergency help in storms and floods call NSW SES on 132 500 or dial 000 in life threatening emergencies.

BY OUR CIVIC ROUNDSMAN
Hunters Hill has been betrayed by Lane Cove MP Anthony Roberts according to a coalition of local residents who want to save the municipality's threatened heritage laws. The Save Hunters Hill Municipality Coalition headed by former
mayor Ross Williams and former councillor Phyl Jenkyn OAM has released a copy of its scathing letter to Mr Roberts where he is accused of betrayal because this month he voted for a proposed Bill which threatens to give property developers powers to override existing local heritage protection.
The Coalition letter notes Mr Roberts attendance at a recent public meeting in Hunters Hill Town Hall where he promised to speak on behalf of Hunters Hill residents opposed to the so-called White Paper on Planning.
"It is inconceivable given your public statements at the Public Meeting in the Hunters Hill Town Hall and in The Weekly Times that you have in the end supported such a flawed piece of legislation," the Coalition wrote to Mr Roberts.
"You have sold out our constituency to support a new Planning System that is not balanced and skewed heavily towards the developer lobby to the detriment of community, heritage and environmental considerations.
"Who will be the beneficiaries of this new system because it is certainly not our residents."
Mr Roberts told The Weekly Times the claims made in the letter were unfair, hurtful and wrong.
"I stand on my record. I have served for twenty years fighting overdevelopmen! in the Lane Cove electorate," he said.
"I'm proud to fight for my electorate and I'm sure constituents will compare and contrast what we have compared with and in contrast to other electorates.
"For example, we don't have massive overdevelopmen! at historic Gladesville Hospital because I've fought against it."
Mr Roberts has previously given his parliamentary support to NSW Planning Minister Brad Hazzard who has the unenviable task of creating more housing to ease the current rental crisis across the North Shore and to prepare for an expected growth in Sydney's population.
The Municipal Coalition has also put its case to Hunters Hill Council and last week warned cou neil-
lors that NSW Legislative Council approval for the Bill will see multi-storey residential towers "like the ones at Top Ryde" approved by the government in Hunters Hill as early as next year.
The Council had previously been warned that its Local Environment Plan (LEP) would be over-ruled by the proposed planning laws and that residents will have unprecedented powers to build and renovate in areas currently restricted by council heritage controls.
In a letter to the council, Mr Hazzard stressed that the community will still have a say but the Coalition said the Minister's comments do little to reduce the impact of what it believes to be flawed legislation, with no redress.
"After an initial period of being prepared to consult with the community you ( Mr Hazzard and Mr Roberts) have now slammed the door in our faces and will not respond to legitimate requests to discuss the matter," the letter to Mr Roberts said.
The Lane Cove MP did not attend a recent event at Kelly's Bush, Woolwich to recognise the 40th anniversary of the Battle to Save Kelly's Bush, which was addressed by the original battlers and former Builders Labourers Federation leader Jack Mundey.
The event was also attended by The Greens' leader, David Shoebridge who last week promised to oppose the White Paper.
"To stand beside Jack, Miriam, Joan and Christina at Kelly's Bush on the site they protected was not only a pleasure for the natural surrounds and company, it was a direct connection with a wonderful activist past and an inspiration for our work for the future," he told The Weekly Times.
"Unless we rekindle the spirit of Kelly's Bush we will see developers getting private certifiers, or council planning staff to approve industrial and warehouse development up to 20,000 metres square on bushland, a row of 20 semidetached houses on your street and the destruction of your two story local shopping centre and its replacement with residential and commercial tower blocks and all without you having any say."
Labor and Independent councillors in Canada Bay, Parramatta and Lane Cove have also expressed concern about the proposed planning changes in the White Paper which Ryde Labor Councillor Jerome Laxale has described as being worse than the former Kenneally government's loathed 3A Planning Law exemptions.
"This is 3A on steroids," he said.

Women's Self Defence Seminar Most women have felt vulnerable at some time
in their lives either walking home alone at night or when at home with young children, even in daylight hours.
For many women the need to feel safe in their own neighbourhood is of great importance, although we often look outside of ourselves for protection.
Lane Cove Women's Action & Information Group is encouraging women to take control of their own personal safety by inviting them to attend a Self Defence Workshop for women and for girls aged 12 years and over.
The seminar will be held this Saturday November 23 at the Living and Learning Centre, 180 Longueville Road, from 11 am to 4pm and will be led by Penny
Gulliver - a highly experienced instructor of self defence.
"All women have the right to feel safe," says workshop organiser Penelope Bowyer-Pont.
"There are many simple techniques that we can use to increase our confidence and our ability to defend ourselves should we ever need to."
Cost is $25 nonwaged, students/$50 waged and includes light lunch.

In 1907 the first Presbyterian Service was held and two years later in 1911 the first Presbyterian Church in Trelawney Street was opened.

ts time to start talking tough, people if you have an analogue tv or recording device on The 3Rd December they will
not be able to receive a tv signal or record anymore. Over the past couple of months we have seen a huge increase in demand for replacement tvs from Analogue to digital and also a massive increase in replacing recording devices. We have realized how many people record regularly (mainly to avoid the ever increasing advertisements on tv) or trying to keep up with the never ending saga of the Bold and The Beautiful or Restless Years (amazingly a lot of Restless Years" or B&B fanatics are retired men and happy to admit it!), People also record to because of their busy schedules so they can watch certain shows at a time to suit themselves. There is a lot of ways to record tv shows these days but the two main devices are either PVRs (personal video recorders) or Hard drive recorders, there is also still available a LG model that can
play VCR tapes and record digital tv to DVD this model is usually for the occasional recorder who can't let go of those VHS tapes they haven't watched for 10 years. We have had best success with hard drive recorders such as Panasonic and LG due to the simple way to set recording times. I have set both brands up in store for demonstration and once people are shown the ease of how to set recording schedules with the new digital signal even the Technophobes are confident they will be able to do it. We often have customers come back down for a refresher course after the they miss recording their favorite show usually due to user error but once they are shown again they are back on track. So make sure not only your tv is digital ready but how you record must be upgraded as well.
I would like to make a few points about the feed back we are getting from customers re the switchover there has been a lot of talk about having to change your aerial for digital we have found that if your reception is good on existing analogue stations it will be ok for picking up new digital stations. We have also been asked many times about Foxtel or Optus pay tv, people are worried if the switch off will effect them, for those of us lucky enough to be able to afford

pay tv your service will not be affected. Another query often asked is about old dvds and VHS players they are all ok to connect to the new tvs for normal playback, make sure you mention this to us as we need to check if your new tv has enough of the old type connections. Some people are also enquiring about attaching a set topbox to
Our answer has been to add an additional speaker such as a sound bar (large add on speaker) or home theater setup. We can also add on cordless headphones which I personally use to get much clearer sound and block out the kids when I occasionally have time to sit down and watch some sport. It has been a busy time for Holmans over the last couple of

an old analogue tv which will also help you switchover but we find it adds another remote into the equation, it doesn't give you the advantage of widescreen picture so there is a lot of the picture that is missing and also a new digital tvs use much less energy than an old analogue set with a set top box attached. We have also had one negative comment about the new tvs regarding the sound in cheaper and smaller screen sizes the sound seems to be of poor quality, I think this is mainly due to most new tvs speakers are much smaller and face the rear.
months with the switchover and it seems to be getting busier as the time for the switchover approaches, keep in mind we deliver and install new tvs, we remove the old one and dispose of it as per government regulations for e-waste and also connect your old equipment if it is still compatible. So to all our more experienced and mature customers our advice is to get out there and spend the kids inheritance and freak them out a bit by getting a bigger size tv and sound system than they have got!

Achieve an ideal weight within 30 days, claim
A l ane Cove based cl inic says it will guarantee clients will reach their ideal weight within 30 days of a first consultat ion.
It makes this guarantee without the use of extreme diets or exhausting exercise, it says, through a safe, relaxing and proven sevenstep program that uses hypnosis.
"A major reason is because we use advanced hypnosis.
"Our advanced hypnosis system will give you the power to direct your mind to reach your ideal weight, guaranteed."
Lane Cove Wellness also says that each program is tailored to the specific needs and circumstances of each client and that an average program session is around 60 minutes.
" In the relaxed state known as hypnosis we can communicate with your unconscious mind.
"That is why it is so quick
and easy to change the habits of a lifetime with hypnosis so you can reach your ideal weight."
With doctors stressing the dangers of both obesity as well as extreme diets which cause a sickly, ultrathin weight, Lane Cove Wellness is quick to point out that each cl ient has an 'ideal weight' which can be quickly and accurately assessed in Lane Cove.
"At the initial consultation you will discover your personal ldeai-Weight-0-Stat and Fat Furnace Flame along with getting a tailormade program to reach your ideal weight in 30 days," Lane Cove Wellness says. "At the end of that period you can see for yourself that you are at your chosen ideal weight.
"There are no fads or crazy regimes."
Lane Cove Wellness acknowledges there have been old myths and misconceptions about the past use and misuse of hypnosis, but stresses its tech-
nique is based on safe and scientifically sound methods.
"Our system is based on advanced hypnosis and the latest NLP techniques combined with a proven seven-step program.
'These are completely safe and with hypnosis and NLP you are aware and in control at all times."
In contrast to some diets and many military style weight loss regimes, the system offered by Lane Cove Wellness does not use a one size fits all philosophy.
"Because your reasons for not being at your ideal weight are different from anyone else's, the steps you need to take and the changes you need to take are unique to you," it says.
"Lest us make it easy for you to reach your ideal weight by simply calling us on 1300 722 625 to make an appointment and keep that appointment."

Courtyard Marriott in North Ryde is offering a range of options ideal for a celebration or an evening out.
Set in a secluded garden just off Lane Cove Road, the restaurant (right) features a sun lit terrace and breezy indoor seating.
Operations manager Tanya Ritter prides the restaurant on being able to provide affordable options for guests and community members: "We are more than happy to accommodate a range of needs for people from the local area," says Ms Ritter.

Dalton Gardens Ryde resident Reginald Michael Wallace must be one of the lucky few who've received the Last Rites and lived to tell the tale.
During World War Two he served with the RAAF in Darwin and while the Japanese air force bombed the city, Reg was so ill from peritonitis he had to be ferried south for an operation where part of his bowel was removed.
No one then, 70 years ago, thought he'd have the strength to shrug death aside, but a few weeks ago the indomitable Reg celebrated his 1 OOth birthday with 150 friends and relatives who'd come from all over Australia and from overseas to join him at the Hunters Hill Bowling Club.
Reg Wallace was born in Narromine in Central West NSW on the September 30, 1913 to parents Richard Wallace and Francis Taylor, one of 19 children in that family. He and his siblings grew up on the family property three miles out of town and later at a homestead in town.
Reg attended school at St Augustine's, run by the Sisters of Mercy and around the age 12 joined the 1st Narromine Scouts and later would become the Scout Master and District Cub Master for the area.
In the 1930s, as a Trooper he joined the 6th Light horse which was later disbanded due to mechanisation. As the war had begun Reg turned to the RAAF and due to his great physical shape was assigned duties as a drill and physical

training instructor. He was stationed at Laverton, Richmond, Wagga, Narromine and Deniliquin, where as a sergeant he met a young private from the Women's Auxiliary Air Force fYVAAF) Teresa Kathleen Cavanagh.
Reg was transferred to 31 Beaufighter Squadron where he attained the rank of Warrant Officer Disciplinary (WOO).
He was eventually stationed in secrecy in Darwin and was under fire from the Japanese the entire time he was there. Reg's letters to Kath were censored and she had no idea where he was or what danger he may be facing.
This was about the time Reg became ill and was not expected to make a recovery. His doctor told him that if he made it through he would be no good for heavy work and told Kath, 'That old man of yours is a pretty tough old bugger. '
Reg and Kath married in 1944 and after the war settled in Bondi, where they had two children. He was employed as a child welfare officer at Yasmar in Ashfield, and during this time he found land offered by Ryde Council at Moss Street West Ryde, which he bought to build their first home.
The family moved into the home in 1948 and another two children arrived. Reg then took up a position at Plessey Telecommunications at Meadowbank as a pay clerk where he remained until retirement in 1978.
He was honoured in 1983
During World War Two Reg Wallace served with the RAAF.
by the 1st Putney Scout Group for service to scouting and his unassuming nature was compared to an advertising slogan at the time, 'BP the quite achiever'.
Reg has a sincere interest in the lives of all of his six children, 17 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and extended family members.
Throughout their lives Reg and Kath made many friends in the neighbourhoods they lived in and through local churches, especially St Charles where they celebrated Mass, and Holy Cross College where they were members of the Parents and Friends long after their children had finished school.
They unselfishly supported many worthy charities and were always helping with fetes to raise money for the schools and parish. They worked as volunteers
for many years at St Vincent's De Paul Ryde and also ran street stalls to raise money for the education of Aboriginal children.
Horrie Rudgeley has been a dear old mate of theirs for over 50 years and who, himself, turned 100 in September this year. Horrie accomplished something that no other person could, he encouraged Reg most vigorously to relax by playing bowls and socialising on a Saturday afternoon at Putney Bowling Club where he remained a member for many years.
Kath and Reg moved into Dalton Gardens in recent years and thanks go to the residents, staff and volunteers for the love and care they have shown.
Reg's faith and love of the Catholic Church has never wavered as has the enduring love and commitment to his beautifu I wife Kath who passed away in February this year aged 88.
He attributes his longevity to clean living: he has rarely drunk alcohol and hasn't smoked; he keeps to a simple diet and exercise, and is content with the honest hard working life he has lived.
During the lunch on his special day a number of presentations were made, among them congratulations from the Queen, the Governor General, the Prime Minister and the Premier of NSW. The Commissioner for Scouting Australia NSW sent congratulations and commended Reg for his services to the movement.

Maximise the advantage of owning real estate • Have reasonable expectations. Aim for positive cash flow, but be realistic and
don't ask for too much rent or you may risk pushing out good tenants.
• Working on your rental property can be tedious. Sometimes it could involve many legal matters with a troublesome tenant. Consider engaging a professional property manager to take back your precious time.
• Federal and state laws determine your responsibilities and liabilities. You can't claim ignorance when something bad happens.
• Have your potential investment property professionally checked before you buy and avoid unexpected expenses down the road.
• Make sure your leases are legal. Confused wording might make it difficult to argue if a tenant violates the terms of the agreement.
• Make friends with your agent, lawyer, tax professional and a banker. They will be essential if you increase your holdings.

Ryde host Asia Pacific Tennis League round
Tennis NSW has confirmed its line-up for this year's Asia-Pacific Tennis League (ATL) conference in Sydney.
Representing NSW, rising tennis pros Matt Barton (Collaroy, NSW), Monique Adamczak (Strathfield, NSW) and Matt Reid (Dural, NSW) join forces with tennis champion and Olympian Casey Dellacqua (Coogee, NSW) and tennis legend Wally Masur (Balgowlah, NSW).
In its second year, the ATL conference is proving to be a highly successful, community competition with thousands of people turning-out last year to support their state.
This year's NSW/ACT
conference is expected to draw record crowds as pros, semi-pros and ex-champions from each team compete for a slice of the $11 0,000 prize.
The winning men's and women's team from each conference will also pocket $6000 each, with money being awarded for second and third spots.
Third round women's and men's matches were staged at Next Generation Ryde last week.
Tennis NSW's CEO Alistair MacDonald said:
academy head tennis coach, lV commentator and former worldttop 20 player, said: "The ATL is a team competition- there's great camaraderie in the NSWcamp.
"It's also about rallying the community, schools, local businesses, tennis clubs and centres, mums and dads - to get involved and support their team," he said.

Gold rush for DSA paddlers PADDLERS from the Dragon Sports
Association Dragon Boat Club based in Rhodes produced outstanding performances at the recent Manly Dam Regatta.
The c lub continues to forge its way to the Australian Dragon Boat Championships in Queensland and ultimately to defend its title of World Champion in Masters Mixed 1 O's 500m in the 9th World Club Crew Championships in Ravena Italy, in September 201 4.

DSA Dragon Boat C lub always welcomes new members to come and try out this fun, competitive and social water sport.
W ith t he competitive Dragon Boat season now in full swing, steady rain failed to dampen the spirits of dedicated local dragon boat paddlers in the season's second official event.
There was an impressive level of competition, with many of the top teams fielding mult iple strong crews across all divisions that resulted in fierce racing despite the inclement weather.
Dragon Sports Association fielded seven teams of paddlers over two age d ivisions - all eager to rise to the challenge.
The DSA crews dominated in the 500m races, winning a total of three gold medals and one bronze while the Masters Mixed team b litzed the field to clinch their final by over 2 seconds - solidifying their previous v ictory.
Both the Premier Mixed and Premier Open teams won their finals w ith less than a second in it, and the lone bronze was won by the Premier Women team with little more than one second between them and fi rst place .
With possibly the most successful regatta in the Club's history, DSA President and Head Coach George Louie, had this to say.
"The team performed way beyond my expectations and the results demonstrate we have worked very hard over the last s ix weeks
to step up and compete," he said.

More batting heroics for skipper Sparke
SYDNEY first grade cricket team are on the Twenty20 Cup finals prowl and in contention for a second trophy in three seasons.
Th e second ranked Tigers host seventh ranked Manly in a quarter final this Sund ay at Drummoyne Oval f rom 2.30pm and are br imming w ith confidence following victories over FairfieldLiverpool, Newcastle and Mosman in the preliminary rounds.
In other quarter final fixtures, top ranked Sutherland host RandwickPetersham at Glenn McGrath Oval; third ranked Campbell town- Camden square off with sixth-ranked Gordon at Raby Oval No 1 and fifth ranked St George line up against Parramatta at Hurstville Oval.
The Tigers' spirits are high following last weekend's rousing victory over neighbours Northern District in first grade action at Drummoyne Oval -thanks to a superb ton by skipper Tim Sparke.
In a thrilling tussle, the experienced Sparke hit an unbeaten 153 off 193 balls to guide Sydney to a two wicket victory over the Rangers, who declared at 9-317 on the opening day.
Sydney were tottering at 4-72 and 5-11 1 before Sparke produced key partnerships with Dan Smith, Daniel Jacob and paceman Jake Turner to help the Tigers claim six valuable points.
The Tigers started their innings on a disastrous note with the Joss of young openers Tristen McDonald (0) and Ash Squire (2) before nightwatchman
'
Charlie Sayers (24) and keeper Andrew Lowe (37) added 50 runs for the third wicket.
Sparke combined with Smith (28 runs off 49 balls) for a sixth wicket union of 52 and also with Jacob (27 runs) in a valuable seventh wicket stand of 61.
The Rangers were poised for victory when paceman Scott Borthwick (4- 1 01 off 25 overs) dismissed English all rounder Brett Hutton for
a duck to have the Tigers 8-225.
But Sparke and Turner (27 not out) proved the heroes with an unbroken ninth wicket partnership of 93 to snatch an exhilarating victory in the 96th over.
Sparke's epic knock featured nine boundaries and four sixes and followed up his unbeaten 108 in a record-breaking fourth wicket stand of 231 with Smith against University of NSW at the Village Green.

Tennis dynamo retires at 88 SHE'S served hundreds of aces and reeled off a multitude of backhand winners - now evergreen
Beryl Eagar of Ermington is ready to hang up her tennis racquet at the ripe age of 88.
Tennis has proved a way of life for the active senior, who is retiring this week after 66 successive years of competitive ladies midweek tennis.
Beryl is pictured with her daughter and doubles partner June Lovett at the Ryde Tennis Centre courts w here they've racked up many a competition triumph in the North-Western Suburbs Tennis Association.
" I've loved every minute of it but its time to give my legs some much needed rest" says Beryl, who turns 89 next February.
For six decades she stood by her motto:
"The more you do - the more you can do."
Constant practice and playing has kept this local tennis dynamo in tip-top shape for much of her career.
Beryl and daughter June,68, have proved a formidable team during the past 31 years in Division 1 and Division 2 events.
"She mightn't have the speed she once possessed but my mother makes up for it with her courtcraft and ball placement," said June.
" It won 't be the same without her."
Introduced to the sport back in 1949 as a crafty 23 year old, Beryl quickly carved her niche in the Pa rr am a t ta - Gran v i II e Association.
With her fierce backhand, high fitness level and court mobility, Beryl proved a handful for opponents in the various grades.
" I remember using a two and six penny Coles racquet and playing five days a week - in charity events, ladies competitions or practice matches with the Inter-District kids," reflected Beryl.
"Most of the ladies in the Association had a backyard tennis court so there were ample opportunit ies to hone your racquet skills."
"All the neighbours would play scrabble and tennis - a far cry from the sporting options that are available today."
