The Weather in Norway

Norway is 1400 kilometers long, and that itself gives us big variations in temperature and

climate. Here are some characteristics with Norwegian weather:

The Gulf Stream gives us an unsual mild climate here in Norway. But what is the GulfStream?o The Gulf Stream is an ocean current that leads hot water from the Caribbean

trough the Atlantic and northeast until it hits Ireland. Some of the water is then

transferred to Norway, and follows the coast. The Gulf Stream originates in the

Gulf of Mexico. Without the Gulf Stream we wouldnt have had a very

different climate. For example we wouldnt have had the warm summers we

are used to, and the temperature rises with 4-5 degrees because of the Gulf

Stream. Without the Gulf Stream we also would have colder winters and large

parts of the country would have been covered with ice and snow all year.

Temperature.o In Norway the coast has warm winters and cold summers. This is because of

the waters ability to maintain heath. The water gives heath to the air, and that

gives us unusual warm winters and cold summer as I mentioned earlier.

o The inland area has a climate determined by the temperature in the ground.The ground takes up and gives away heath easily. Therefore the inland area has

warm summers and cold winters in contrast to the coast.

o We find differences in climate all troughs the country, while the southern partof the country has long and warm summers, and not so cold winters, the

northern part has long and cold winters and short summers. This is because of

the countrys large extension as I mentioned earlier. And this gives us a lot of

variations in climate.

Wind.o The Norwegian Coast is exposed to a lot of wind, and that can often lead to

nature damages. The wind dosent have a uniform velocity, but the wind speed

decreases when it hits land. However, it can still be used as a resource. In more

and more places along the coast you will now find wind mills that give us

electricity which is both effective and environmentally friendly.

o Norway is rarely exposed to hurricanes like the ones we have seen in f.eks.The USA, but we still have our amount of hard weather. A place in Finnmark,

called Furuholmen, has 50 days of storm every year!

Precipitation and fog.o The coast in west has between 190200 cloudy days every yearo Frostmist (frostryk) arise over the open sea when the air over the water is

extra cold. Steam from the water surface increases and condenses in the cold

air.

o The amount of precipitation is a lot bigger during autumn and winter. This iscaused by the difference between the wind temperatures. As I mentioned

earlier the temperature in the southern part of Norway is a lot higher than the

temperature in the north. And when wind from the south runs into wind from

the north, and this is what causes precipitation.
