We live in a world filled with strife. I dont have to tell you that. Name-calling and confrontation have become more common. Even among Christians, we seem to be more tolerant of judging our neighbor than loving our neighbor as ourself (see Matt 22:39). I came across an article that I found refreshing. It is about a different, more Christ-like approach. The arti- cle is about Fred Rogers of Mr. RogersNeighborhood fame. This appeared in The Joyful Noiseletter. I want to share it with you. The title of the article is Look for the Helpers. When Fred Rogers was a boy, he was a "sickly, chubby boy" whose classmates called him "fat Freddy" and chased him home from school, according to Maxwell King's new biography of Mister Rogers, The Good Neigh- bor. His mother was well known around town for her extraordinary kindness and gener- osity, and was a model for Fred. "When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me: 'Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping,' Rogers recalled. "To this day, especially in times of disaster, I remember my mother's words, and I am always comforted by realizing that there are still so many helpers – so many caring people in this world." Rogers was deeply religious, committed to his mother's Presbyterian faith, and later became an ordained Presbyterian minister. A friend in Rogers' church said: "What would Christ be like? He would be like Fred. He would encourage you to do things that were right and would help other people." Fred Rogers influenced an entire generation to be more loving; to be a neighbor. This was based directly on the first commandment cited by Jesus, to love God and love your neighbor. This made me think of some questions: Who am I influencing, and in what way? To whom am I being a neighbor? Am I excluding anyone from the category of neighbor? Jesus didnt. How about you? How would you answer those questions? These are excellent questions for you and I to ask ourselves as we complete the journey through Lent and prepare for Easter. We live in a world filled with strife. I don’t have to tell you that. Name-calling and confrontation have become more common. Even among Christians, we seem to

be more tolerant of judging our neighbor than loving our neighbor as ourself (see Matt 22:39). I came across an article that I found refreshing. It is about a different, more Christ-like approach. The arti-cle is about Fred Rogers of Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood fame. This appeared in The Joyful Noiseletter. I want to share it with you. The title of the article is Look for the Helpers. When Fred Rogers was a boy, he was a "sickly, chubby boy" whose classmates called him "fat Freddy" and chased him home from school, according to Maxwell King's new biography of Mister Rogers, The Good Neigh-bor. His mother was well known around town for her extraordinary kindness and gener-osity, and was a model for Fred. "When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the

news, my mother would say to me: 'Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping,' Rogers recalled. "To this day, especially in times of disaster, I remember my mother's words, and I am always comforted by realizing that there are still so many helpers – so many caring people in this world."

Rogers was deeply religious, committed to his mother's Presbyterian faith, and later became an ordained Presbyterian minister. A friend in Rogers' church said: "What would Christ be like? He would be like Fred. He would

encourage you to do things that were right and would help other people."

Fred Rogers influenced an entire generation to be more loving; to be a neighbor. This was based

directly on the first commandment cited by Jesus, to love God and love your neighbor. This made me

think of some questions: Who am I influencing, and in what way? To whom am I being a neighbor? Am I excluding anyone

from the category of neighbor? Jesus didn’t. How about you? How would you answer those questions? These are excellent

questions for you and I to ask ourselves as we complete the journey through Lent and prepare for Easter.

PASTORAL APPOINTMENTS With the upcoming retirement of Pastor Adams, Bishop Robert Farr has announced appointments for Cameron UMC.

This is pending final action at the Missouri Annual Conference session on June 9. The Reverend Dan Brown is to be appoint-

ed as Lead Pastor of CUMC. Pastor Dan is currently serving the Bethel UMC in Wildwood, MO. He is married to Deb. They

have two adult children and a two-month-old grandchild.

Dan holds a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Missouri at Rolla, a Masters in chemical engineering from Iowa

State University, and a Masters of Divinity from Asbury Theological Seminary. He has been serving Bethel Church for seven

years. Prior to that, he was at Fair Grove (MO) UMC for eight years. Pastor Dan stated, “Deb and I are looking forward to

joining the folks at Cameron UMC as together we seek to become people who live and love like Jesus so that we can make a

positive, lasting difference in the lives of other people in the community and throughout the world.”

Also anticipated is the appointment of Kobey Puls as a ¾ time Associate Pastor. For

almost a year, Kobey has been serving as a hired staffperson here at CUMC. With this ap-

pointment, CUMC will be the only church Kobey is serving. He will be here for Sunday

worship, and will have full pastoral privileges, under the direction of the Lead Pastor.

“This is good news for CUMC,” according to Pastor Adams. “I believe that with Dan

and Kobey here, this church will have the committed Christian leadership to expand and

“You are a hiding place for me; you preserve me from trouble; you surround me with glad cries of de-

liverance.” — Psalm 32:7, NRSV

Imagine seeing your home swept away by floodwaters or a hurricane or escaping wildfires and wondering when—or if —you could return home. This was a reality for many people in 2017 as a record hurricane season devastated communities in Florida, Louisiana, Texas and Puerto Rico and wildfires tore through California neighborhoods. Flooding is a current reality to our neighbors in Nebraska, Iowa, and Northwest Missouri. Our partners in mission in Mozambique are suffering the devastation of a ty-phoon that brought 125+ MPH winds. Not only were homes, businesses, and church buildings destroyed, but numerous lives were lost. A different kind of disaster arose for those who once called Mosul, Iraq, home. Families faced life-or-death choices as they returned to find land mines and ex-plosives in their homes. When a disaster overwhelms a community, the United Methodist Committee on Relief is one of the first agencies in and the last out. As the humanitarian and re-lief arm of The United Methodist Church, UMCOR puts the beliefs of the church into action and makes a real difference in the world. In 2017, UMCOR touched 425,046 lives in more than 30 countries through dis-aster response, humanitarian relief, sustainable development and migration pro-grams. This would not be possible without the generosity of those who give on UMCOR Sunday and throughout the year. UMCOR also depends on strong part-nerships with United Methodist annual conferences, central conferences and other Methodist bodies internationally, along with aid organizations, internal relief agencies, communities and local nongovernmental organizations worldwide. Since 1940, UMCOR has rebuilt lives, homes and hope. Thank you for being a part of this legacy.

The Servant Leadership Team The Servant Leadership Team meets the third Tuesday of each month at 5:30 pm in the Education building. Anyone who wants to attend these meetings is welcomed and encouraged to join us. There is a stipulation that only committee members may vote on items. The team goes over reports from finance, trustees, staff parish relations, youth, and missions. We try to make sure that each of the committees are aware of church happenings and work to ensure your congregation needs are being met. You may see a list of who is on these committees on the bulletin board near the sound booth and there is also a copy of these committees in your new 2019 Directory. If you have any questions please ask Lynette Harri-son or any committee member. If we don’t know the answer we will do our best to find the answer.

l GENERAL CONFERENCE 2019

NOW WHAT?

There have been wide-ranging reactions to the recent special session of General Confer-ence that dealt with issues related to human sexuality. That includes indifference, anger, hurt, confusion, and many questions. The purpose of the conference was to lay out a way forward for the United Methodist Church. Did it accomplish that?

This is a complex issue with no easy answers. If you would like a forum to discuss what happened and what it might or might not mean, please join Pastor Rick for a time of conversa-tion. He will meet with those who would like to look at this on April 2 at 6:00 PM in the church sanctuary. All church members are welcome. We will do our best to respect your time and hold the conversation to one hour.

WANTED Someone to teach and play with our little ones (ages 0-4) during church.

We are in need of additional nursery volunteers. We would like enough vol-

unteers so that the commitment would be one service every other month.

All volunteers MUST be safe sanctuary certified. The church will reimburse

you for the cost of the certification if you wish. If you would like to volunteer,

please indicate this on the blue attendance insert when you attend service this

Sunday. Questions? Contact Linda Morris at 816-724-4619 or

[email protected]. Thank You for supporting the youngest members of our church family!

We will be collecting Peanut Butter and Jelly for the Cameron Food Pantry during April and May. These are much-needed items through the summer month. Let’s help them stock up!

Congratulations LeRoy & Norma Beck Twin Great Grand-daughters, Oakley & Remington, born 3/16/19. Weight: 5 pounds 7 ounces each. Grandparents are Grey & Lisa Beck. Parents are Sydney & Sam Freeman. A big brother welcomes them.

Food Pantry Cameron UMC is responsible for providing help at the Cameron Food Pantry & Clothes Closet on April 15, 17 & 18. Please mark the blue attendance sheet when you attend service this Sunday. Thank you so much for your participation and continued support of this program!

CUMC Directory

We have scheduled an update session with Life-touch for July 8th, 2 pm - 9 pm. This is a perfect op-portunity to be included in the new directory if you are new to the congregation or have a change in your family. Our last update was November of 2017, so the kids have grown since then. It is also a great oppor-tunity to update the family photographs on your wall. Be watching for more information in the next few weeks.
