by putting on THE WHOLE ARMOUR OF GOD.

I put on the GIRDLE OF TRUTH.May I stand firm on the truth of YOUR WORD so I will not be a

victim of Satan’s lies.

I put on the BREAST PLATE OF RIGHTEOUSNESS.

May it guard my heart from evil so I will remain pure and Holy

I put on the HELMET OF SALVATION.

We all thought there were only 14 ….and now a 15th! This is a series of arresting theological meditations on the mysteries of human existence – as manifested in the depths of the experience of the God-man, who accepted, absolutely, the human condition. It is no less obscure in our own existence.

on 12 April.

Salma was just 18 years old, pregnant and fearful for her life and that of her

unborn child, when she featured in Project Compassion 2013.

In Bangladesh, maternal and infant mortality rates are tragically high. During her rst pregnancy, Salma was very sick and in distress, she sought the help of a

midwife trained by Caritas’ Safe Motherhood Program. Six years on, she’s

now a healthy mother of two strong, happy children. Salma is committed to giving her children the education they

need to provide them with the future she hoped for.

Please donate to Project Compassion 2019 and help reduce infant mortality rates in countries like Bangladesh and provide hope to pregnant women in remote communities for happy and

healthy families.

SOIBADA – OUR SISTER PARISH

Next year marks the tenth anniversary of our Parish partnership with the Parish of Soibada in Timor Leste. We plan to celebrate this relationship in a variety of ways. Over coming months I will provide a little background and some updates on the projects we have embarked upon to aid that community. In 2008 the children of Maria Regina Catholic Primary School asked to help the children in Timor Leste. Their enthusiasm and desire to live the school motto of “Making a Dierence” was the driving force behind an incredible project that has grown to embrace the entire community of the Northern Beaches. Pittwater Friends of Soibada became a registered, tax deductible charity. Not only have our other Parish schools of Sacred Heart and Mater Maria become involved but so have a number of State and Private schools, clubs, churches, businesses and community groups.Timor Leste is one of Australia’s nearest neighbours. Only one hour’s ight from Darwin, the country has been ravaged by war. Over 250,000 Timorese died in 25 years of brutal occupation before they were granted Independence. In 2009 Kathy Gee, the Principal of Maria Regina, Fr George and I visited Timor Leste and met with local the Parish Priest and village chiefs to ascertain the way in which our community could reach out to the people of the village in friendship, love and assistance. In 2010 we were accompanied by the General Manager of Pittwater Council. He and Fr George signed agreements with the local government and the Catholic Church of Timor Leste linking our community with Soibada. The aim was to provide support for sustainable development projects as directed by the people of Soibada. These people needed a hand up not a hand out. Education is the key to the future. Our goal is not to make the change, but to facilitate the change so that it comes from within the Soibada community. We must enable the people to help themselves and restore the dignity that has been stolen from them during years of oppression. They need ownership of any project and the impetus for change must be internal. This has led to many varied projects over the last 9 years. Watch this space for regular updates on each one! In the meantime have a look at Pittwater Friends of Soibada Website and Facebook page or contact me to see how you can get involved. Fifth Sunday of Lent 6th & 7th April 2019

You are Invited to The Mass of Chrism celebrated on Tuesday 16 April with the Papal Nuncio, His Excellency, Most Rev Adolfo Tito Yllana to be the Principal Celebrant, at Our Lady of the Rosary Cathedral, 23 Yardley Ave, Waitara.

It is one of the most solemn and signiicant liturgies of our church.

During the Mass, the Papal Nuncio, His Excellency, Most Rev Adolfo Tito Yllana will bless the oil of catechumens, the oil of the sick, and the oil of chrism. We use the irst for adult catechumens and infants, the second for anointing the sick, and the sacred oil of chrism for baptism, conirmation, the ordination of priests, and the consecration of altars. For more than one thousand years, bishops blessed the oils on the Holy Thursday liturgy, but in 1955, a separate Mass earlier in the day at the cathedral was for that purpose, the Mass of Chrism. Today it may be celebrated on a different day shortly before Holy Thursday to give the celebration independence and so that more people like you may attend.Since the bishop is the only minister in the diocese who may consecrate chrism, this Mass highlights his ministry and our union with him. This Mass also acknowledges the ministry of priests. It invites them to renew their commitment of service and to receive the prayers and support of the people. The Mass of Chrism gathers the faithful of the diocese at the Cathedral to prepare for the celebrations of Christ in all our churches throughout the year.

If you would like to represent Pittwater Parish at the Chrism Mass at 7.30pm, there will be transport arranged to the Cathedral, we will leave Sacred Heart Church Mona Vale for Waitara at 6pm. To secure a seat, please put your name on the list provided at the back of Church. Thank you.

Blessing of the Easter Foods In Slavic countries the blessing of Easter foods was an important tradition. This blessing is still found in the updated Roman Ritual, and is a wonderful practice. Many parishes still participate in this custom of the blessing of the Easter food or baskets. The blessing of special Easter food takes place on Holy Saturday. A basket containing lamb (which of course signies Jesus, the Lamb of God), boiled eggs, dyed and plain, Pascha (a special Easter bread), and other foods, is taken to the church where the priest blesses it.Among the Polish people the same custom is practiced, but the main foods blessed are an egg which is broken and shared by all on Easter Sunday morning, and a lamb moulded of butter or pastry. This butter-lamb and blessed Easter egg have a place of honour on the festive Easter table. In Rome on Holy Saturday there is an old custom which is still in practice. A fresh table cloth is spread on the table in the dining room and on it are laid out the Easter meal, including the uncooked Easter Lamb which is decorated with owers, eggs, wine, fruit, and a large traditional cake called "pizza". These are sprinkled with holy water, and are given a special blessing by the priest. There will be blessing of Easter foods or baskets on 20 April at 11am, Sacred Heart Church, Mona Vale.

The Living Word First Reading Is 43:16-21A reading from the prophet IsaiahI am doing a new thing and I will give drink to my people.

Thus says the Lord, who made a way through the sea,a path in the great waters;who put chariots and horse in the fieldand a powerful army, which lay there never to rise again, snuffed out, put out like a wick:

No need to recall the past,no need to think about what was done before.See, I am doing a new deed, even now it comes to light; can you not see it?Yes, I am making a road in the wilderness, paths in the wilds. The wild beasts will honour me,jackals and ostriches, because I am putting water in the wilderness(rivers in the wild)to give my chosen people drink. The people I have formed for myselfwill sing my praises.

The word of the Lord

Responsorial Psalm Ps 125. R. v.3

(R.) The Lord has done great things for us; we are filled with joy. When the Lord delivered Zion from bondage,it seemed like a dream. Then was our mouth filled with laughter,on our lips there were songs. (R)

The heathens themselves said: ‘What marvelsthe Lord worked for them!’What marvels the Lord worked for us!Indeed we were glad. (R)

Deliver us, O Lord, from our bondageas streams in dry land. Those who are sowing in tearswill sing when they reap. (R)

They go out, they go out, full of tears, carrying seed for the sowing:they come back, they come back, full of song, carrying their sheaves. (R)

Second Reading Phil 3:8-14A reading from the letter of St Paul to the PhilippiansBecause of Christ I look upon everything else as useless in order to gain him.

I believe nothing can happen that will outweigh the supreme advantage of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For him I have accepted the loss of everything, and I look on everything as so much rubbish if only I can have Christ and be given a place in him. I am no longer trying for perfection by my own efforts, the perfection that comes from the Law, but I

want only the perfection that comes through faith in Christ, and is from God and based on faith. All I want is to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and to share his sufferings by reproducing the pattern of his death. That is the way I can hope to take my place in the resurrection of the dead. Not that I have become perfect yet: I have not yet won, but I am still running, trying to capture the prize for which Christ Jesus captured me. I can assure you my brothers, I am far from thinking that I have already won. All I can say is that I forget the past and I strain ahead for what is still to come; I am racing for the finish, for the prize to which God calls us upwards to receive in Christ Jesus.

The word of the Lord

Gospel Acclamation Jl 2:12-13

Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ, king of endless glory! With all your heart turn to me,for I am tender and compassionate.Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ, king of endless glory!

Gospel Jn 8:1-11A reading from the holy Gospel according to JohnLet the person without sin be the first to throw a stone.

Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. At daybreak he appeared in the Temple again; and as all the people came to him, he sat down and began to teach them. The scribes and Pharisees brought a woman along who had been caught committing adultery; and making her stand there in full view of everybody, they said to Jesus, ‘Master, this woman was caught in the very act of committing adultery, and Moses has ordered us in the Law to condemn women like this to death by stoning. What have you to say?’ They asked him this as a test, looking for something to use against him. But Jesus bent down and started writing on the ground with his finger. As they persisted with their question, he looked up and said, ‘If there is one of you who has not sinned, let him be the first to throw a stone at her.’ Then he bent down and wrote on the ground again. When they heard this they went away one by one, beginning with the eldest, until Jesus was left alone with the woman, who remained standing there. He looked up and said, ‘Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?’ ‘No one, sir,’ she replied. ‘Neither do I condemn you,’ said Jesus ‘go away, and don’t sin any more.’’

The Gospel of the Lord

Reflection

Lent ends on a note of wonder. In the face of all the mighty works that God has already performed for the people, God promises something even more

magnificent.Throughout this season we have reflected on the marvels that God accomplished in the lives of the people, cutting a covenant with Abraham, leading the people out of bondage, revealing God's own personal name, bring them into a land that is bursting with life. Now God says: You haven't seen anything yet.The first reading proclaims that something new is about to appear. In the gospel, this new thing unfolds before our eyes. Here we see Jesus neither rejecting the law nor changing it. Instead, he shows that the law, as good as it might be, serves something higher. He shows that the mercy and compassion of God exceed the authority of the law. Once again we see that the readings of Lent are less concerned with mortification and penance than they are with divine graciousness and our response of joy and thanksgiving.Paul is not satisfied with the blessings of the past. In fact, he considers them rubbish when compared with knowing and being united with Christ. Life with Christ transforms us from people who are caught in sin to women and men who have been forgiven. Life in Christ is the new thing that God has fashioned for us. God is the one who creates something new; we are the ones who are re-created.
