Memories of the WCCC 2013 Season, Including a Thank You to All Who Helped with

the 2013 Season Since this is our winter Warbler edition, and we are looking forward to the upcoming 2014 season, I thought it might be fun to take a look down memory lane—and to say thank you to many of you. If I have missed someone, please know that it was not on purpose, and you are thanked immensely. Here are a few of the highlights• Our opening night was May 17. and what a night it was! We asked everyone to wear black and white attire; the women looked lovely and the men were handsome. We had a combination cock-tail party and food stations served buffet style. Edwina Costly, Maggie Hartley, and Diane Hove outdid themselves with the presentation and the excellent food offerings. Members greeted their friends and got reacquainted. Lots of laughter, sharing of stories, and just actual happiness to be back at their Club in the mountains were all noted.• May also included our first champagne brunch of the season, and a tasty meal it was. This set the tone for the next five months of enjoying a lovely meal with breakfast and lunch favorites. Marilyn Van Vleet spearheads this event, and those who attend are always complimentary of the food and the ambiance.• We had many wonderful Friday night events. A Texas theme, an Italian night, a Thanksgiving meal in September, and a repeat of one of our favorite themes—a Kentucky Derby. We had fun with some Club activities after Friday night meals, and these included a corn toss and a bacci ball roll contest. June Merkle was our winner at the corn toss, and she had a great “throw” with the bean bags and a great “eye.”June is our first ever corn-toss gold medal winner. Her prize was a jar of corn relish from Barber Orchard.• Our best event at the club this past year had to have been our FOUNDERS’ CELEBRATION, marking 30 years of history for the club. We honored those members who are long-time loyal folks with our Club, and we had a wonderful pictorial review of the Club on a DVD which was shown at dessert time after the lovely celebration dinner. The DVD film had poignant images of times past and was enjoyed by all who viewed it. There were a few “oohs” and “aaahs” as some of the members recognized them-selves and their friends on film from the past. It was very moving. We also had a wonderful talk given by Margaret Donahue, who articulated and informed the attendees regarding just how her husband and many other of the founding people got together, took the risk, and were successful in creating and sustaining our Club.

Mary Haslam was very helpful as she pointed out folks appearing on the DVD, and helped us with remembering past members names. The dining room was decorated by the Friday night committee, and we must thank Cherry Stone, Nancy Rhead, Sheryl Lowell, and Linda Hughes for their hard work. The room looked spectacular. Fresh flowers, candles, and the music from Bill Turner added to the enjoyment. A great time was had by all• We celebrated birthdays. We had a wonderful card party and dance for fund raising, and we celebrated Father’s Day with a free gift drawing; Jim Tillbrook was the winner. And who can forget that rainy July 4, when we had 108 people packed in the club, and they enjoyed the traditional picnic food, bingo, and wonderful dancing. We sang patriotic songs, thanks to Dr. Bill Stecher at the keyboard, and our pride in out country was evident. These were just a few of the memorable Club days and evenings at the WCCC in 2013. But let us not forget the Tuesday night bingos, the pig roast, the great card games on summer Thursdays, and the collection of food and money we gave to the Christian Ministry. We were busy and we made many memories. I wish to thank the following people for all their efforts and assistance this past year which helped to make the Club more enjoyable and something to be proud of.* All of the committee people. We are so grateful for you and your commitment to our Club.To the people who volunteered to close the pool. That is a chore that has saved us a lot of stress. Great job! This includes John Beane, Betsy Stecher, John Kearney, and John Harvey. * David VanVleet for the lovely herb garden he created so that we might enjoy fresh herbs on our food. Also thanks to David for taking wonderful pictures at the 30th anniversary celebration.* George Bliwernitz for helping with decision-making on the exterior building work, and for working along with the crew.* George Young for mobilizing a crew and working with them.* Anne Budde and her dedicated committee who spent countless hours on decisions and who facilitated the lovely exterior work and the back porch improvement. The other folks on the committee are Joyce Hauck, Betty Rutherford, and Steve Thomas. These folks are now moving on to 2014 and more Club improvements.* Neil Budde who has stepped up multiple times for pool maintenance issues and for the beautiful directory that he oversees with lots of work involved in the details.* Bill Turner and Dr. Bill Stecher for music we enjoyed in 2013. You are both the best. * Kathy Astley and Mary Haslam for keeping Thursday card players’ attendance straight and accurate. * Merry June Burwell for always staying dedicated and dependable with our Tuesday night buffet and bingo. Your attention to this chore is outstanding.* The VanVleets for also keeping our brunches well attended andorganized.

* Bob and Barbara Merkle who do so many things that they can not all be listed, please know I appreciate you.* Friday night callers Virginia Hullen, Cherry Stone, and Marilyn Radney. The job is not easy, and you all are dependable and work well with your lists of people for attendance.* The yard “guys” and their helpers. Thanks so much to Gerald Ben-ton and John Harvey for keeping the grounds so beautiful. Helpers included George Young, George Scanlon, Bob Merkle, Bill Lackey and “Johnny.”* To those folks who help collect money at the door for our events, Carol Reissig, Bill Lackey, Malena and Cecil Nichols, Clark and Cherry Stone, Linda Hughes, Merry June and Bob Burwell, Marilyn and David VanVleet, and Mary Haslam (July 4).* To Carol Reissig, Steve Thomas, Roger Thomas, Malena Nichols, and Marie Seibel for working on membership so diligently.* To all the helpers from the July 4 party. David H., Bud, Bill L.and George S.—the “grill boys.”* To all the bingo callers. What a team of people!* To all the wonderful Board members and your great attention and great attendance this past year. We never had an issue with establish-ing a quorum. You wrestled with lots of issues and concerns, and were a great team to work with.* To George Farling, our liquor locker man. Good job, as always.* Gladys Bickmeyer for all her help with DVD presentation, and for “loaning” us her talented daughter (Beth) who helped immensely. The photos you supplied were most helpful.* Dr. Bill Stecher and the Warbler. You do such a wonderful job, and we enjoy it so much. Thank you for all your dedication and the jokes are great also.* To all club members who have helped in any way. You are the best, and keeping up your membership and your support has meant a lot to the sustaining of the Club and the preparation for a new year. Let’s make 2014 another memorable year. With a group such as ours, we cannot miss! Maxene

Our Ladies’ Room Improvement Drive

Dear Club members: Please be generous with your donations for the 2014 remodeling of the ladies’ room. It is a very worthy and needed project. The theme is “Our Ladies Deserve the Best Seat in the House,” and that is really true. This improvement is badly needed. Please call or email Joyce Hauck or Steve Thomas if you have any questions re your donations or fund raising. Joyce can be reached at be reached at 954-806-8151, and Steve can be reached at 757-412-7052. Their e mail addresses are listed in the Club Directory. Anne Budde, along with her committee, is leading the choosing of the materials for the project with the help of George Bliwernitz. Anne and George will facilitate the work design and implementation. Our goal is to have this project funded and completed by opening time in the Club season for 2014. Our Club members are always willing to help, and we really do need your support. I personally have never dealt with such a caring and generous group of people as the folks we have in our Club. It really is like a large family. Help us to keep on improving YOUR CLUB. We want to make you proud! Thanks. Maxene

Winchester Creek Country Club members have historically been known to be GENEROUS: “willing to give or share.” Whether in time, talent or resources, our members have always stood up. The Board of Directors appointed Joyce Hauck and Steve Thomas to head up FUNDRAISING for our Ladies’ Room Renovation: “Our Ladies Deserve the Best Seat in the House.” So far we have collected in excess of $3,000 toward a goal of $9,000. Time is of essence to raise the remainder of the estimated total needed. The completion date of prior to May 15 has been moved up to prior to April 20 as an opportunity to rent the facility prevails. Anne Budde, et al, are ready to proceed April 1 and has arranged for contractors to complete the renovations on schedule. We need to FUND the project during March 2014. A solicitation mailing will be forthcoming. Please accept our appreciation in advance of your generous support.

...and from Roger Thomas, for the Committee for “Our Ladies Deserve the Best Seat in the House”

. Six Mistakes of Man I. The delusion that individual advancement is made by crushing others. II. The tendency to worry about things that cannot be changed or corrected . III. Insisting that a thing is impossible because we can’t accomplish it. IV. Neglecting the development and refining of the mind, and not acquiring the habit of reading and study. V. Refusing to set aside trivial preferences. VI. Attempting to compel other persons to believe and live as we do. ...Cicero

Vol. XI #1 Winter 2014

I just received a thank you note from Marjorie’s family for the flowers sent to the funeral home from the club. One of the sweet things her daughter wrote was “Marjorie was like a child getting ready for camp each year when she prepared for North Carolina and the club. She chose her outfits carefully, making sure her shoes and clothes matched. She was so happy when she was anticipating returning to her beloved WCCC.”

IN MEMORIAM

Maxene

THANK YOU!

The VanVleets and the Lackeys treated Marjorie O’Neal to lunch just two weeks before the day she was buried. I thanked her for her generosity with the donation she sent for the ladies bathroom repair. She smiled, and her eyes twinkled as she told me she could not enjoy the bathroom remodeling herself, but to think of her and how much she enjoyed the Club. Marjorie was laid to final rest on February 5, and the memorial service was very inspiring with lots of tears and some laughter as the “Marjorie” stories were told. Our club flowers graced the altar, and we were well represented with many WCCC members present. At Marjorie’s request, one of the songs played at the funeral was “When the Saints Go Marching In.” What a wonderful lady—to me, she sparkled and was very endearing; I am sure you will agree! We will have a memorial at the club this year to remember this vibrant and special lady. Some of our Club members have suggested donating some money for a memorial of some kind to be placed at the Club in her memory. I am sure we will always keep her in our hearts. I think we all agree that Marjorie was an inspiration to all, and that we are all the better for having known her. Since we are not a 501c3 corporation, any donations given for a memorial at the Club in honor of Marjorie O’Neal will not be tax-deductible. Checks may be sent to Bob Burwell and he will be happy to collect them in a special fund. Also, I will be happy to take any memorial suggestions from any Club member and share them with the Board.

Thanks to Gordon and Pat Kiester and Bill Lackey for their generous contributions for the flowers sent to the funeral home in remembrance of Marjorie O’Neal. The white wicker basket of flowers (all white) graced the viewing area, and then also (on the day of the Remembrance of Life celebration) graced the church altar. The card attached to the flowers read “Beloved friend from all the members of WCCC.” We have received a lovely thank-you note from the family, which will be posted at the club. May our beloved Marjorie rest in peace!
