Welcome back

It is good to see so many new families joining our school community. We hope that you find Wadalba Community School to be a happy and welcoming place and one that provides a broad range of activities to cater for all.

We are also excited welcome Miss Chloe Mason and Mr Thomas Scriven to our staff who bring a new range of ideas and experience to share with us. We will formally introduce these teachers at our first assembly on 8th Feb. We would also like to welcome back Mrs Lauren Ryder who worked with us a few years ago and is returning this year.

We would like to congratulate Miss Kendal Hindmarch on her marriage during the holidays! She will now be known as Mrs Kendal Williams.

We will be saying goodbye for now to a few of our staff who have either already started maternity leave or will be shortly: Miss Chloe Clarke, Mrs Jessica Malu and Mrs Chloe Fisher. Miss Danielle Green is continuing her maternity leave but will be returning later in the year. Also, Mrs Natalie MacDonald is continuing her leave as she is relieving in higher duties at another school.

There are currently 285 students enrolled in Wadalba Primary. Our community continues to grow, as do our enrolments. At such a time that our classes reach capacity and we are provided another teacher and class, we may need to restructure as has been successfully done previously. Rest assured, the needs of our students as well as clear communication with families will guide all of our decision-making if this takes place.

As you can see, several of our classes are multi-age classes. This occurs because schools are staffed on overall numbers not on the numbers in each grade. Students in all classes have work programmed to their individual capabilities and needs. Being in a multi-age class is not detrimental to a student’s learning and is often very beneficial. If you have any concerns or queries, please do not hesitate to contact me to discuss them.

Awards Each newsletter the Bronze and Silver Award recipients will be listed to recognise their significant achievement. Remember to give your 5 commendations to Ms Sanday in order to receive your award.

5 Commendations = 1 Bronze

3 Bronze = 1 Silver

3 Silver + a community service = A gold award presented at the end of year presentation assembly.

Updating your email address We have found that digital communication directly with parents and carers has been the most effective way of ensuring that information makes it home. There is no need to complete the slip if you have not changed your email and have been receiving our emails already in 2018. For children with two or more families please fill in the email addresses for each parent to help with communication.

Assemblies Assemblies will continue to be held every second Friday commencing in Week 2 at 1:30pm. The student leaders run the assembly each week and one class performs an item. Parents are welcome to attend.

Week 2 - 8th February - Leadership

Week 4 - 22nd February - 3/4M

Week 6 - 8th March - 5/6B

Week 8- 22nd March - 1G

Week 10 - 5th April - 3/4P

Swimming Carnival This will be held on Thursday, 14th February for all students in Years 3 – 6 and for any student in Year 2 who is turning eight this year and can competently swim 50 metres. A separate note will be sent home with more information. All 3-6 students are expected to attend as there will be no supervision for 3-6 students at school on that day.

Eating Breaks The school’s health program encourages students to aim for a healthy, balanced diet. Each day your child should come with something wholesome and nourishing for recess and lunch as well as fruit/vegetable portions for ‘Fruit Break’. Students are also encouraged to drink water rather than sweetened drinks. For health and safety reasons we ask that students do not bring glass bottles, cans, chocolate bars, lollies or chewing gum to school.

Home Reading Home reading will recommence as soon as possible. Please check your child’s bookshelves at home as there are still some books outstanding from 2018. It is important that all students read every day and record it on their home reading card from K-6 whether it’s with school readers or their own books.

Canteen If you are available to assist between 10:30am and 10:45 am or between 1.00pm and 1.45pm on any day please ring Vicki, the canteen supervisor, and give her your name. Under OH&S regulations children are not permitted in the canteen.

Class Requisites - Home Purchase 2019The following school requisites can be purchased personally to assist your child during the school year.

Message from NSW Department of Education If you have a question, issue, complaint, feedback or compliment, we’d like to know.

Special Religious Education A feature of the public education system in NSW is the opportunity to provide time in class for education in ethics, faith and morality from a religious or non-religious perspective at the choice of parents. A parent/carer may at any time notify the school in writing that they wish to change their decision. Students will continue the same arrangement as the previous year, unless a parent/carer has requested a change in writing.

At Wadalba Community School for Years K-6 the SRE we currently offer is Christian (delivered by providers from The Anglican Diocese of Newcastle, Condell Park Bible Church, The Lakes Evangelical Church). Students not attending SRE are given supervised alternative meaningful activities.

For more information about Special Religious Education (SRE) including the list of approved providers, please visit: https://education.nsw.gov.au/teaching-and-learning/curriculum/learning-across-the-curriculum/religion-and-ethics If your preferred SRE is not available please contact the approved provider at the link above.

No Students before 8:15am Please remember that there are no students to be at school before 8:15 when supervision begins. There have been times this week when students had arrived as early as 7:00am and were left unsupervised in the playground for over an hour. Being with an older sibling in the playground does not constitute supervision. If you require childcare before school there are many services that offer out of hours care in our local area.

Afternoon Pickup It is lovely to see many parents that come to school to pick up their children. Each afternoon the gates to the Primary section will be opened from 2:20pm and we ask that you remain outside of the hall area where plenty of seating is provided and do not enter or playground area. This is very distracting to teachers and students as they are wrapping up their day of learning. As soon as the bell goes, families can walk to their child’s classroom for collection. Thank you for your co-operation.

Welcome to Kindergarten KB

Welcome to Kindergarten 2019 at Wadalba Community School. We have been so busy learning new school routines and expectations. Your children may have talked to you about the 5 Ls of listening (eyes looking, ears listening, lips closed, hands in laps and crossed legs). Kindergarten have been learning how to work at their tables and how to work cooperatively in small groups. We are beginning to use these skills to work sensibly in our literacy and maths groups. Well done to all Kindergarten students for all their hard work during their first week of school. It is sure to be a wonderful and memorable year for your little ones.

In my free time I love: Reading, writing, playing soccer and playing with my Saint Bernard, Luna.

I’m looking forward to: Working collaboratively with my colleagues, getting involved in the school community, building relationships with students and their parents/guardians and teaching!

Government Rebates

$100 Voucher for Children’s Sport and Fitness FeesParents in NSW can claim $100 towards extra-curricular sport and other physical activity fees thanks to the NSW Government’s Active Kids program. This program will provide a $100 voucher for parents to put towards sporting fees and registration costs for each school-aged child in NSW.

Families can use the voucher for registration and membership costs, as well as fees for activities such as swimming and dance. The annual voucher will not be means tested because the NSW Government wants every child from every family to get active and involved in community sport and fitness.

The health of our children is a priority for the NSW Government, and it is hoped that this makes a difference in enabling you to enrol your child in the sport or physical activity of your choice.

More details about the program and how to download your voucher is available at sport.nsw.gov.au/activekids or by phoning Service NSW on 13 77 88.

$100 Voucher for Creative and Cultural ActivitiesNSW Government is helping cover the cost of school-aged kids (4.5 to 18 years old) to get involved in creative and cultural activities.

Parents, guardians and carers can claim a $100 voucher per year to put towards the cost of lessons and fees with registered providers.

It’s a great opportunity to let kids find their passion and learn new skills.

Vouchers can be used to contribute to registration, participation and tuition costs for performing arts, visual arts, coding, languages, literature, music and other creative and cultural activities with our approved list of activity providers. Visit https://www.service.nsw.gov.au/campaign/creative-kids for more information.
