WACOM President’s Message
March 2014
WOW this winter just
did not want to give
up!
But we survived and made it to
the WASHfest, a sign Spring is
arriving soon!
Fantastic to see all the famil-
iar faces and to find a few
treasure in somebody's junk
bin.
As I rewire my antenna switch
relay matrix, I continue to
further my use of BNC connect-
ors on the interface panel.
While I only use them at
'exciter' levels, the conven-
ience of the speed of the bayo-
net wins. I do utilize SO-239/
PL259 for the high power con-
nections. While some will sug-
gest the N connector at high
power, like a broadcaster,
my concerns remain as broad-
caster's antennas do not exhib-
it high SWR and the voltages
that accompany high SWR. So I
stick with good old "UHF" con-
nectors.
My main HF antenna doe not even
have a connector! Prior to pur-
chase 15 years ago, I ask the
antenna designer which
connector should I prepare...
he said NONE. He instructs the
user to solder directly to the
input of the balun, using some
special high voltage/high temp
tape. He said connectors were
the only way his antenna
failed, so he eliminated that
fault completely. His antenna
has no traps and is capable of
4KW input.
Spring is just around the cor-
ner and antennas are getting
ready to sprout. Which antenna
are you putting up this
spring??
Write us an email, and share
the good news!
Tonight we test following the
2014 General Class license
class.
We'll be hearing some new HF
hams and a new TECH also .
Last night one of the NEW Gen-
erals brought his Icom 718 to
the radio room, and our first
contact was Luxembourg... That
radio hooked to the dipole
works fine !

A letter to the Editor
Because of his vast efforts in building up the profile and importance of Amateur Radio in Washing-ton County, our president, Bill Steffey (NY9H),
needs to be recognized. As a result, through his generosity, creativity and enthusiasm, the WACOM group now has their own Club House, which all members can be proud of. He has also worked tirelessly on behalf of our Club by finding volunteers from our group and helping us with of our own local projects.
I have always found Bill to act in an im-partial way and to be a great source whenever I needed advice, research or in-formation to help deal with the odd is-sues that I have encountered as Board member of this Club. His input has al-ways been fair, educational and of great value.
To encourage the Amateur commu-nity to get involved in the new mode of Echo-Link System, he established linking systems.. He has quietly gone about his business keeping the system alive and running. Somehow, the system appears to be magically there for anyone to use! He has always been very pleasant to deal with, no matter how difficult the ques-tions being asked sound to him. If he de-tects complete frustration in a call for help, and he can't solve the problem over the phone, he has been known to drop by and work his magic to make things go the way they should! Despite his busy re-tirement schedule, he continues to keep
up to date with developing technology and has been instrumental in getting our Internet Gateway up and running. His continuing efforts have kept our present system on the leading edge!
He has always gone out of his way to help out new or visiting hams. He has traveled many miles to help a new ham to build a new antenna, give info or help with the odd technical difficulties that a new ham will run into from time to time.
He has even taken time out to conduct excellent class room instruction for new potential Amateur operators. He has also spent many hours working with other groups doing HAM related projects. i.e. Class room instructions, on the air ad-vice and special events, both as an opera-tor and in giving talks about Amateur Ra-dio, etc. He is very active on HF and his "countries worked" total is well over 300. He epitomizes the active HF Amateur.
He is one of a few world class operators He has always been there, by my side, whenever I needed him and is a great as-set and ambassador for our club and Am-ateur Radio.
He is, by the example he has quietly set, what Amateur Radio is all about.

CQ Names New Advertising Manager as Publisher Shifts Gears
03/06/2014
CQ Communications President Richard Ross, K2MGA, has announced the ap-pointment of David Chartock to head the company’s advertising department, effec-tive immediately. Chartock, who is not a ham, arrives “as the magazine charts new ground as a part-print, part-digital ‘hybrid’ publication covering the entire communi-cations hobby,” the CQ announcement said. As Editorial Director Rich Moseson, W2VU, explained, “The main print and digital edition of CQ continues to focus on Amateur Radio, while the online-only CQ Plus supplement to the digital edition of CQ covers the full spectrum of hobby ra-dio communications, from shortwave lis-tening and scanning to broadcast band DXing and more.”
Chartock succeeds Jon Kummer, WA2OJK, who became CQ’s advertising chief last fall. Kummer, who left in mid-February, faced a similar recalibration as the publish-er of Antique Radio Classified.
Chartock has more than 25 years’ experi-ence in publishing, both in editorial and sales positions. For 12 years he was editor of the trade magazine New York Con-struction News. Since 2002, he’s been an independent sales representative, working with start-up publications and the annual journal of New York’s Concrete Industry Board.
CQ announced recently that it’s still expe-riencing delays with its January and Febru-ary print editions, but that mail delivery of both issues was scheduled for mid-March. CQ has told its advertisers that a combined March/April issue of the magazine will follow “shortly thereafter,” before it re-sumes single-issue publication. Online edi-tions of the January and February issues of CQ are available for downloading and viewing.
In CQ’s February “Zero Bias” editorial, Moseson cited CQ readership numbers that were “not keeping pace” with growth in the number of ham radio licensees, and “the glacial pace of the overall economic recovery” among the reasons behind the CQ magazine’s delivery difficulties.
Word of the publications realignment came in December. Effective with the Feb-ruary 2014 issue of CQ, content from CQ’s three sister publications — Popular Com-munications, CQ VHF and WorldRadio Online — has been incorporated into CQ Plus. The print editions of Popular Com-munications and CQ VHF have been phased out, and WorldRadio Online no longer exists as a separate online publica-tion.
Hams’ Experimental VLF Signals Heard in UK & Europe
03/06/2014
In what’s believed to be a “first,” a very low
frequency (VLF) signal from a ham radio ex-
perimenter in New York was heard across the
Atlantic. Bob Raide, W2ZM, was transmitting
on 29.499 kHz under a Part 5 Experimental li-
cense, WH2XBA/1. His very slow-speed
(QRSS) CW signal was initially detected in the
UK just before 0000 UTC on March 3 by Paul
Nicholson, an SWL, and later by Mike Den-
nison, G3XDV, and Markus Vester, DK6NM, in
Germany. Nicholson also copied a 29.501 kHz
transmission from Dex McIntyre, W4DEX, in
North Carolina, operating as WH2XBA/4.
“In recent weeks a number of amateur tests
have been running from the USA to Europe
around 74 kHz and at 29.499 kHz using several
hundred watts to large antennas,” blogged Rog-
er Lapthorn, G3XBM. He said that signals on
74 kHz were “well copied,” but that “the sur-
prise” was detecting the 29.499 kHz signal. “As
far as I know, these 29.499 kHz VLF signals are
the first amateur VLF [transmissions] to span
the Atlantic — fantastic results by well-
equipped stations using suitable receivers and
good software.”
Warren Ziegler, K2ORS, who is on the Experi-
mental license as WH2XBA/2, told ARRL that
he and several other radio amateurs have ob-
tained Part 5 licenses to experiment on 500 kHz
and on 137 kHz. “It got so 137 kHz was becom-
ing routine, that my signal was copied hundreds
if not thousands, of times all around Europe,
North America, and South America,” he said.
Ziegler has been a participant in the ARRL-
sponsored experimental operations on 500
kHz as WD2XSH/23. He said Raide wanted to
be the first amateur signal to span the Atlantic
on VLF, which he defined as between 3 kHz
and 30 kHz, so Ziegler applied for and received
the WH2XBA Experimental grant, and included
Raide and four others on the license.
“I was ready,” Raide told ARRL. His transmit-
ter has a 3CX3000A7 tube in the final, running
grounded grid and generating 800 W. The effec-
tive isotropic radiated power (EIRP), however,
was estimated to be approximately 1 mW. To
operate on 10,000 meters, Raide has a 90 foot
vertical antenna using a reconfigured Zepp, fed
via a huge loading coil that is 4 feet tall, more
than 1 foot across and comprised of some 2000
feet of #14 wire. He employs a few thousand
feet of “chicken wire” for his radial system.
The transmission consisted of “XBA” sent at a
rate of 120 seconds (2 minutes) per dot and 360
seconds (6 minutes) per dash of CW. In the UK
Nicholson copied the signal on software using a
PC sound card with a preamplifier ahead of it.
His antenna is a pair of orthogonal loops, each
20 meters square, at ground level, transformer
coupled to the preamplifier.
“It is actually a makeshift temporary antenna
set up for a site test about 3 years ago,” Nichol-
son explained. This summer he hopes to rebuild
it with a larger area and more copper in the
loops to improve sensitivity “and steel guys to
make it sheep proof.”
Ziegler said German and UK experimenters
have been experimenting at frequencies below
9 kHz, which is unregulated. Stefan Schaefer,
DK7FC, was detected in Iceland — some 900
miles distant — while transmitting in this fre-
quency range to a kite-borne antenna.

and Joe Craig, VO1NA
