WASA Meeting - 21st February 2017 by Ralph Keller
A new year of WASA meetings has begun and our first speaker for 2017 was Nadine Dudek, giving us a masterful demonstration in pure watercolour painting. I would describe Nadine's work as highly decorative. However, this is not supposed to suggest that her pictures are in any way "lightweight" but rather that she has the ability to eliminate superfluous detail and focus on emphasising the stand-out features of her animal subjects. This imparts great impact to Nadine's work, her delicately fluid style is very easy on the eye and her pictures fit nicely on any wall. This has made Nadine's watercolours much sought after by buyers of wildlife art. Her distinctive style, already well known in WASA circles, was again illustrated by the number of completed paintings of various birds she brought along - among them three gorgeous Owl studies. For her demonstration subject she chose a composition showing two Mute Swans. Here again, the intention was to clearly define the heads and the elegant necks of the birds as the focal point of the picture, whilst the rest of the bodies and wings were to be loosely indicated only and largely allowed to be lost in the background. Nadine usually spends a considerable time thinking about her compositions and has a clear idea on what she wants to achieve before she sketches the subjects with a soft pencil on heavy watercolour paper - now always 640gsm rough (cold pressed), by the French manufacturer Arches. This thickness of paper holds a lot of water, which allows more wet in wet painting and better blending of colours. Winsor & Newton, as well as a selection of Daniel Smith colours form Nadine's palette. Whatever the brand, her advice here is to stick to good artist grade paints - a quality product will always repay the artist with better results. Nadine prefers Neef brand brushes - she paints with a limited range of mainly taklon/squirrel mix, both oval and round in shape. Again, whatever brand you purchase, good quality costs money but will pay dividends. When Nadine started her demonstration, she liberally covered the swans heads and necks with water and a little yellow ochre to lift off the basic shapes from the white paper. The beaks were then painted lightly in quinacridone violet and permanent rose whilst the dark skin surrounding the eyes was also indicated, using indigo blue and either burnt umber or Van Dyke brown. The definite shapes of heads and necks she painted to clean edges while the rest of the bodies were treated increasingly loosely and allowed to blend into the white of the paper. Shadows of burnt sienna and French ultramarine - with indigo blue added for deeper tones - then gave nicely rounded shapes to heads and necks.

Nadine's equipment Early Stage The picture was finally completed by strengthening the three-dimensional shapes of the beaks, and giving highlights to the swan's eyes - together they provided the strong centre of attention to an otherwise delightfully loose painting.
Throughout the demo Nadine explained the various steps, whilst at the same time answering the increasing number of questions from the audience. She also touched on the basic philosophy she brings to all her painting - the central piece of advice of which is clearly the principal guide line for her own art:

- Don't overwork your painting. - Keep it simple. - Stop unnecessary fiddling and the end result will be the better for it. Thanks, Nadine, for giving us a very enjoyable evening, full of interest and lively discussion - you have started the year on a high note with your inspiring presentation. We wish you much continued success in your career as professional artist. Our thanks also to Kris for her interlude in demonstrating wet stretching of paper. If you are interested to learn more about Nadine's eye-catching style of watercolour painting you can take part in her next workshop. It will be held at Senior Art Supplies in Malvern on Sunday 9th April 2017 (see AGRA webpage http://www.agra.org.au or phone AGRA 039882.5859 for details).
