THE VOLUNTARY TRUMPET A PUBLICATION OF THE CHARLESTON CHAPTER

OF THE AMERICAN GUILD OF ORGANISTS

FEBRUARY 2018

The mission of the American Guild of Organists is to enrich lives through organ and choral mu-

sic. We encourage excellence in the performance of organ and choral music; inspire, educate,

and offer certification for organists and choral conductors; provide networking, fellowship, and

mutual support; nurture future generations of organists; promote the organ in its historic and

evolving roles; and engage wider audiences with organ and choral music.

Every two years, AGO chapters are mandated by

headquarters to elect officers to continue the leader-

ship of the chapter. It’s that time again. The nomi-

nating committee was composed of Dr. Bill Gudger,

Nancy Lefter, and Dr. Julia Harlow. Their nomina-

tions for the executive board are as follows.

For Dean: Loretta Haskell

Loretta is currently serving as

Sub-Dean of the chapter. She

was previously Dean in the years

2010–2012, leading the chapter

in its first Pipe Organ Encounter

of Music and Organist at St.

Mark’s Episcopal Church, runs a

vibrant private studio for voice

and piano, and is the K4-Third

Grade Music Teacher at Charleston Catholic.

For Sub-Dean: Jennifer McPherson

Jennifer is a relative new-

comer to the chapter. She is

Minister of Music and Or-

ganist at First (Scots) Pres-

byterian Church. Go here for

a full biography:

For Secretary: Nancy Lefter

Nancy has served the chapter in a

number of capacities over many

years. She teaches at The Citadel

in the Fine Arts area, directing the

choir, teaching courses, and play-

ing for weddings. She is the assistant organist at the

Cathedral Church of St. Luke and St. Paul. Nancy is

a well-known jazz singer and can be heard frequent-

ly at celebratory functions around town.

For Treasurer: Edmund LeRoy

only because nobody else wants

the job. He’s the organist at Ro-

denberg Chapel at Franke at

Seaside. Ed is Professor Emeri-

tus of Music from Rollins Col-

lege in Winter Park, FL.

At Large: Katie Holland (until 2022)

Katie is a rostered Deacon in

the ELCA and Minister of Mu-

sic at Lutheran Church of the

Redeemer where she has served

musically since 2010, directing

Continuing At Large Members

until 2020

Ann Hood

Ann is Director of Tradition-

al Music Ministries at the

Church of the Holy Cross,

Sullivan’s Island. She is a

long-time member of the

Charleston Chapter.

Huey Waldon

Huey is Director of Music and

Organist at Stella Maris Roman

Catholic Church, Sullivan’s

Island. He is also active as mu-

sic director for theatrical pro-

ductions in the Charleston area.

NEW PIPES FOR SUMMERALL

In case you missed it, The Citadel has begun its restoration of the Summerall Chapel organ led by Cornel Zim-

mer Organ Builders. The new console is in place, a first step in a multi-phase project to restore and expand the

historic pipe organ. At the completion of the project, this console will control the pipe organ of over 100 ranks!

Installation of the Trompette Militaire on the rear wall is complete. This is the first real pipe stop to be added to

the instrument. The case mimics the woodworking around the altar, and houses the blower in one tower, and the

reservoir in the other. It is about 20' long, and hangs 24' above the chapel floor. The longest resonator is 8' long.

The trompette was made by AR Schopps, voiced on 13" of wind. If you have a Facebook account, you can hear

the trompette here: https://www.facebook.com/352559354879532/videos/969906159811512/ (You'll need to

scroll through the photos.)

You’ll receive an email soon asking for

write-in candidates. Start thinking

now about others you might want to

see serve on the board. And you can

propose your-self for a position.

GODSPEED TO JACK CLEGHORN

A long-time fixture in Charleston’s musical scene, Jack Cleghorn left the Low-

country in early fall to take up the post of Organist and Master of the Choristers at

St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Fayetteville, Arkansas. He leaves his position at

Stella Maris Catholic Church on Sullivan’s Island where he was responsible for all

aspects of the church’s musical life, and where he conducted an annual youth chor-

isters camp. He leaves also his post as music director of the Charleston Symphony

Youth Orchestra. Everyone in the Charleston Chapter wishes him and his wife

Grace a hearty Godspeed. St. Paul’s is lucky indeed! If you didn’t get a chance to

say farewell, you can reach Jack at [email protected].

IN MEMORIAM

The chapter lost two dear friends recently, both from cancer. Randy Lesemann died

Friday, December 22, 2017. Born in Oklahoma, he graduated from St. Andrews High

School and The Citadel, Class of 1972. Randy served as a C-141 pilot in the U. S. Air

Force during the Vietnam War. He then worked for the Federal Government and re-

tired as an air traffic controller. He was a member of the Sons of Confederate Veter-

ans, American Guild of Organists and The Huguenot Society of South Carolina. He

was an active member of St. John's Lutheran Church where he also served on the ves-

try. The chapter made a contribution to St. John's Lutheran in Randy’s name.

The Rev. Sherry L. Owensby-Sikes, of Mt. Pleasant, SC, died November 4,

2017. She is survived by husband David Sikes.

Sherry received a BME from University of Southern Mississippi, Hattiesburg, MS

in 1967; an MDiv from Southeastern Theological Seminary, Wake Forest, NC in

1981; a STM from Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary, Columbia, SC in

1998. She continued her education through educational institutions and conferences

throughout her working career.

Ordained in the United Church of Christ, Sherry was called to serve the Evangeli-

cal Lutheran Church in America as Pastor, Good Shepherd Lutheran Church,

Swansea, SC. In 2000, she was called to serve as Chaplain at Franke at Seaside in Mt. Pleasant, SC and was in-

stalled in 2001. Sherry's working life was dedicated to the education and ministry of others. She served as chap-

lain to the Charleston Chapter for a time. The chapter made a donation in her memory to Lutheran Hospice.
