Shannah Tova, Leviticus 19: 1: And GOD spoke to Moses, saying, 2. “Speak to all the congregation of the people of Israel and say to them, you shall be holy, for I G-D - your G-d am holy.” Wow! To be holy like G-D. Where do I sign in? Who do I need to know? How much money will it cost me? The answer is NOTHING! You do not need to KNOW people or to pay money to be holy like G-D. You just need to be good. G-D even tells Moses how to be good in this chapter. Two of the ways that will make us like G-D can be found in verses 9 and 10: 9. “When you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not reap your field right up to its edge, neither shall you gather the gleanings after your harvest.” 10. And you shall not strip your vineyard bare, neither shall you gather the fallen grapes of your vineyard. You shall leave them for the poor and for the sojourner: I am the Lord your God. As I read those verses I am reminded of one of the last times I was in Israel. You see, in Israel there is , שנת שמיטהOr Jubilee Year. Every 7 years farmers from all around the country give their fields one year to rest, just as GOD rested on the 7th day after he created the world. When I was driving to my parent’s house in the Galilee, I saw fields with the crops still on them and big signs on the side of the road. After I slowed down a little bit and read the sign my heart was overflowing with joy! The signs read; “Please, if you have a need, come and take anything you want from the field!” So simple and yet so powerful. Those people were following the holi-ness code and their hearts and I will always consider them holy. So my wish to you this High Holiday season is - Be holy. Be helpful for your fellow human being. Big or small – It doesn’t matter as long as “We love our neighbors as ourselves.” חג שמח ושנה טובהChag Sameach V’Shannah Tova Happy and good new year, Rabbi Peled

THE VOICE
Temple B’nai Jacob of Wellington is a Conservative, egalitarian synagogue serving the Western communities of Palm Beach County. Temple B’nai Jacob seeks to inspire each member to become more deeply connected to his or her Jewish identity by providing relevant worship experiences, life-long educational experiences, opportunities for social action, and a connection to Jewish culture. We are a diverse and multi-generational congregation committed to serving as a center for contemporary Jewish life.
Shalom from TBJ Women's League
Ma nishtana ha shana ha zeh? Of course, we all know why this year is different. We've learned new
vocabulary - coronavirus, Covid-19, self-quarantine, social distancing, essential workers, Instacart,
Zoom. We've suffered the loss of 168,000+ lives in the United States. Many of us have been isolated in our
homes since February. And yet, and yet... Here I am, talking about Women's League for 2020-2021. Some
things will be different - our membership brochure will be abridged; our programs will come to you via
Zoom, and will be announced via email as we discover what will work on Zoom. Some things will remain the
same - our dues remain the same at $40; our Book Club will meet, as always, three times during the pro-
gram year; the Judaica Shop remains open, BUT you need to call Liz to make an appointment. Torah Fund's
theme for this year is B'yachad (Together).
We ask you to consider becoming a Benefactor for this Women's League commitment to supporting
the Jewish Theological Seminary and all its schools. Torah Fund all-occasion greeting cards are available for
purchase at the Temple. Please read the weekly announcements from the Temple, from Women's League,
and from the FABULOUS FLORIDA REGION of Women's League.
TBJ WL looks forward to your membership (renewal) and to your participation. We wish you a Shana Tova, good health above all, as all that is good follows from that.

THE VOICE
This year has been unusually tough. We have certainly felt some highs of our TBJ family, but also the lows of a global pandemic. Isolation and loneliness have been close to us. Emotions that we have touched daily, and witnessed in our loved ones. Despite it all, the thread that has held us together is... each other. Despite it all, we are finding ways to meaningfully connect. Despite it all, we have experienced the full range of Jewish practice together — Shabbat Service, Torah study, Shivas, B’nai mitzvah teachings, and more. I have seen you laugh, cry, mourn, give comfort, sing, teach, and come together remarkably through this time. What I’ve learned through this pandemic is that where there is a will, there is a way. And together we are finding our way. And so, as these Holy Days approach, I commit to you, and call upon you. I
commit to believing in you. I commit to your potential. I commit to your journeys. I commit to helping you grow and flourish amidst it all. And I call upon you to believe in the power of these days to help us heal, to help us mourn, to help us express joy, to help us forge an old and new path forward, together. My role as Co-President, along with Rebecca Blitman is to adapt TBJ during this unusual time and to find space for connecting with G-d, Torah, and one another. Lo Neivosh L’Olam Va’Ed “May we not feel shame or despair about our sorrows, our losses, or our loneliness, and may we never lose hope for the light that is to come.” So, join us. Pray with us. Sing with us. Love with us. Be with us, during this memorable 5781 High Holiday season. The many leaders we have at TBJ have made the commitment through many committee meetings. I want to thank the following committees in working together to not only make this Yontif one to remember, but a meaningful one for all our TBJ family; Re-opening Committee, High Holiday Task Force, Ritual Committee, and of course our Board of Directors. Through our entire history, the Jewish people have marked the profound power of Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, and the Festival Days that follow with worship and joy and often times in circumstances even more unfathomable than the challenges of today. From the very bottom of our hearts, we pledge to you a powerful and spirited High Holy Day experience with your TBJ family. Whether observed in person as safety permits, or through zoom, we will join together (in the deepest meaning of the words) to experience the wisdom and sanctity of these awe-inspiring days. Our High Holidays this year feels more poignant and timelier than ever before. While we are not in a position to share precise logistical plans and schedules at this time, we are committed to creating something truly special for our TBJ family, and you will be a part of it. The Jewish community has been shaped, since we left Egypt dependent on each other for survival, to deepen human connection, to respect each individual and guide us into respecting and caring for each individual’s needs. This is our goal at TBJ in these uncertain times. We plan on sending out a High Holiday appeal letter this Yontif. I ask you to recommit to TBJ and make your donation. We are so grateful for your membership and dues, but dues alone do not cover our expenses. This is not uncommon for a nonprofit. That is the purpose of our appeal, it helps bridge the gap that is not covered by our revenue and allows us to continue to provide the educational and spiritual programming of which we are so proud. I assure you that we are extremely prudent with the money we spend. Sallee and I want to wish everyone in our TBJ family a peaceful, healthy, and a Happy New Year.

MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE
Member Spotlight This month I am delighted to introduce you to the Bernstein family. The Bernsteins have been members of Temple B’nai Jacob for four years and Wellington residents for the past ten years. Ross, a native of Cincinnati is a computer engineer for a financial company. Mindy, while originally from New York, considers herself a native South Floridian, having come here when she was a teenager. Mindy, a stay at home mom, is very involved in the community, helping many others on a volunteer basis as well as taking their children to their many activities. Their children, Mitchell 13 years old, and Gabriella, who is 12, will celebrate their B’nai Mitzvah on October 24. Mitchell, who attends Polo Park Middle School, is an avid golfer as well as serving as an intern for a local sports broadcaster, enjoys writing about sports and is on the school’s debate team. Gabriella, also at Polo Park Middle, is a level 6 gymnast, pretty impressive for some-one so young, and enjoys arts and crafts. Both are excited about their upcoming B’nai Mitzvah and are planning their Mitzvah project which involves the community and is especially meaningful at this very difficult time.
When asked to talk about our temple, Mindy said “B’nai Jacob is the epitome of a family shul”. The family felt they were welcomed with open arms and the synagogue really cares about every single member. (I agree!). Both Mitchell and Ga-briella are finding their religious school experience so enjoyable, loving their teachers and learning about Judaism. We are so happy to have this young family as an integral part of our Kehilla and look forward to celebrating with them on the wonderful occasion of the B’nai Mitzvah. Lynne Birnholz

Dear Families, I hope that this message finds you all well and safe. These are such trying times for all of us and certainly not the way any of us envisioned the start of the 5781 religious school year. The Education Team will be doing their best to make these next months of remote learning with your children to be as beneficial as possible. This school year we will be following the established school calendar as much as possible using remote technology. August 30 will be a pick-up only outdoor visit. The teachers will be at tables at the mall entrance, masked and observing social distancing with prepared packets for each student. Packet pick-up time is 11:00- noon. Our school has purchased a number of new books for our students many with computer enhancements. We will all be outside at the mall circular driveway entrance waiting to hand you packets in your cars. Parents will be receiving an email from your children’s’ teachers introducing themselves. E-mail will be sent to parents with invitations and the class schedule which begins on September 13. School will be held from 10:00-11:40 for grades K-2 and 10:00-12:30 for the older grades. There will be scheduled breaks and change of classes to include time for the entire school with Rabbi for prayer and Israel studies. Rabbi Peled will be conducting special services for children on Rosh Hashanah Sunday September 20 at 2:00 PM and Yom Kippur Monday September 28 at 4:00 PM. Be certain to Zoom in for these Services. While we are in this remote classroom phase, we will also continue to have our enrichment activities enjoyed remotely. Family Service Havdallah and Animal Havdallah will be as scheduled. Simchat Torah and Sukkot events will remain as scheduled via Zoom. Yes we will still be having the Simchat Torah Flag contest and also building a Shoe Box Sukkah display.
We wish you an extra healthy New Year. Sending good wishes to our B’nai Jacob Family. Thank you so very much for your continued support.
