Greetings Disciples,

If the Lord does not build the houseIn vain do its builders labor; If the Lord does not watch over the city,In vain does the watchman keep vigil -Psalm 127

We just finished Holy Trinity Sunday where we ponder the fact that God is a mystery much larger than our minds can take in. We should never forget this. Anytime we think we have a handle on God we should be worried. As the Danish philosopher Kierkeg-aard so ably notes, God cannot be “gotten” like that...if it were so, we wouldn’t need to have faith. Instead we’d have proof.

I love that the Trinity is illogical, and yet so real. I know many things with more than one form. And I’m not talking just about water. Take you mother, for example. She is also probably a wife, a friend, and a daughter. She is all of these things, and also your mother, yes? And yet, that illustration only works until it doesn’t...God is not best ex-plained that way. God is best explained by looking through the cross the resurrection. God is the agent of life.

And at LMC we’re experiencing life, both new life and life lost. I’m preparing as we speak for the funeral of a beloved teacher in our greater community. All the while I’m also hearing story after story of those expecting births. We’ve said goodbye to some great community members whose life has taken them now to new places, while we’re also preparing to receive some long-time members back as vocation has led them back to Chicago. God is the agent of life. The Father pouring life into the Son, the Son into the Spirit, and back ‘round again it goes...

That generative movement is what keeps this community going. This house was not built by humans; it was built by God. We shouldn’t be confused about that. But now that we’re in the circle of life that we call “growth,” how will we look with new eyes to the future that this new life is calling us toward?

We need some new thoughts on mission, on vision, and on investment. The council has been studying and praying on this topic, and we’ve got some ideas that we’d like to throw out to you on August 24th. Will you join us between services for a short con-gregational meeting on mission, vision, and investment? We’d like everyone to attend, to lend an ear to what we’ve been hearing, lend another eye to what we’ve been seeing, and begin to imagine how we might literally and figuratively expand this house that God has built, this community that God continues to watch over.

Please make plans to be here on August 24th and I’ll continue to see you in church at 9 or 11 all summer. May the life-giving blessing and peace of the Holy Trinity be with you!

LMC Internship News

To the community at Luther Memorial Lutheran:

Hey y’all! My name is Chris Michaelis, and, along with my wife, Tiffany, I’m thrilled to be joining your community as your Intern this next year beginning on August 25th! I’m excited for the upcoming year, and I can’t wait to see where God is leading us together.

Tiffany and I, and our cat, Piper, live in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Chica-go, where I just finished my second year at the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago. We moved to Chicago in August of 2012 from Ft. Worth, Texas. We love Chicago and couldn’t imagine a better place to spend this season of our life. Chicago winters are a little more extreme than what we’re used to from Texas, but hopefully this past year was as bad as it will be for a while.

I grew up in Arlington, Texas and was raised in the Lutheran church. Tiffany was born out in west Texas, near Lubbock, which is where we met. We both went to Texas Tech University and were members of the marching band. Tif-fany played clarinet, and I was a drummer. My undergraduate degree is in International Business with minors in Spanish and Music. Tiffany and I got married in 2010 and lived in Ft. Worth for two years before moving to Chicago.

Tiffany currently works as an Account Manager at a social media firm in the River North area of downtown Chicago. We love exploring the city, trying new restaurants, cooking, and spending time with friends. We’re excited to be join-ing the vibrant ministry already happening at Luther Memorial, and are eager to partner with you in this mission God has called us to.

We look forward to seeing y’all soon!

Chris and Tiffany Michaelis ◉

Meet the Internship TeamAs we prepare to welcome Vicar Chris Michaelis to spend the year with us, the Internship Team is preparing to have things in place for him when he arrives, including readying the office that he’ll be sharing with Deaconess Claire. The team is co-chaired by Audrey Downes and Andy Larson and also includes Monica Crum, Pat Kallios and Mike Oppold. We will work throughout the year that Vicar Chris spends with us to provide him support and guidance.

Faith and Justice

All we have to do is read a paper or listen to the local or national news to know that there are many issues of Faith & Justice in the world and our own com-munity that need attention. Our small community here at Luther Memorial Church has done amazing things. We were instrumental in getting the Lincoln Square Friendship Center open and continue to support that through mone-tary donations and volunteers. We have been making and serving sandwiches once a month for seven years for the Night Ministry. We have held month-ly Peace Vigils for peace between Palestine and Israel for ten years. We have participated with CROSSwalk to bring attention to the violence in the neigh-borhoods of Chicago. We helped relocate the Dong family and continue to support them through tutors and mentoring. We have collected computers and electronic items to be recycled. We hosted Nancy Jones from Fair Trade Chicago, on May 18th for a discussion of the Sweatfree Chicago ordinance that Alderman Amaya Pawar has proposed. With the help of the Holy Spirit we have done AMAZING THINGS!

Pastor Tim forwarded an email from Jon Skogen of Church World Service re-garding the annual CROP Hunger Walk in the Chicago area. Here is some background on how his event began. “When CROP began in 1947 (under the wing of Church World Service, which was founded in 1946), CROP was an ac-ronym for the Christian Rural Overseas Program. Its primary mission was to help Midwest farm families to share their grain with hungry neighbors in post-World War II Europe and Asia.Today, we’ve outgrown the acronym but we re-tain it as the historic name of the program. CROP Hunger Walks are interfaith hunger education and fundraising events sponsored by Church World Service and organized by CWS local offices across the U.S.”

I spoke to Jon about our possible involvement in this year’s October 19th walk Twenty-five percent of the monies raised are used for funding three local en-deavors of justice work. The Night Ministry is one of the possible organizations in our area to share the funds this year.

As I get more information, I will pass it along. In the mean time, please share with me or any of the other Faith & Justice members ideas for future projects where our hands can do God’s work. If you are interested in joining this group, please let me know.

Peace & Hope for a better world,

Linda Miranda ◉

Junior and Senior High Youth News

Brian Myers is the Jr. and Sr. High Youth

Director at LMC

I know you’ve heard this before, but I (along with Deaconess Claire and the Youth Group) simply cannot thank you enough for coming together as one community to support the Youth Ministries of this church, and making sure each Youth that wanted to participate in summer camp was given an opportu-nity to do so. Thank you!

This summer our theme has been Seeing God Anew. God is all around us and sometimes it just takes us to be aware of God’s presence to realize that. Elijah experienced God in the silence; Moses saw God’s back only after he had passed by, but the fact remains the divine makes its presence known to us in all sorts of ways.

This is especially true when we’re thrust into a situation that is out of the ordinary, rare and sometimes uncomfortable. The Jr. Highers were faced with several uncomfortable situations at camp this summer, and maybe none more uncomfortable than staring down a 1,200 foot zip line, 150 ft above the ground. When it comes to your prayer life, trust me, hanging that high from only a wire, moving 35 mph is certainly is a time when you’re talking to God!

We took 10 Jr. High Youth to camp this summer, which is almost double what we took last year. 3 Youth were returning, 7 were brand new to the experience and 5 of those 7 are incoming 6th graders, so they were experiencing Youth Group for the first time. Out of the ordinary, rare, uncomfortable, but there for a purpose, to experience the divine in new and exciting ways.

I thank God that we’re able to do these camping trips. Being in a camping atmosphere solidifies any group and there are few things more inspiring than witnessing young people sit in a circle and take time to intentionally build one another up. If you ask me, that’s where I continually see God; in our last nights at camp, affirming one another and watching walls of uncomfortably and new-ness to a group fade and be replaced with unity and coming together for a greater purpose.

It’s easy to experience God in a wilderness setting when you’re used to concrete and cell towers, so the challenge I gave to the Jr. Highers leaving camp is the same I’ll pass along to you. Where do you see the divine in your daily life? Where do you see marks of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit? What can you do in your own lives to become increasingly more away of God’s presence?

I pray for peace and awareness for you as you hold these questions and move through life. ◉

The whole Trinity concept revolves around different aspects of one thing repre-sented in different ways and playing out in our lives and the world. I’m gonna go out on a limb here and say that your volunteer time with the church and the community embody the Trinity mindset completely. We, at LMC, are one body, members of the same unit, and we need to function together.

Church Music is a perfect example of many members contributing their indi-vidual gifts and time to create a church experience that is elevated, meditative, celebratory, and fulfilling. There are those who have been in the LMC music scene since before I came here 12+ years ago, and they have laid a great foun-dation. I can’t even imagine choir without these pillars (Jackie, Larry, Tom...), but church choir also isn’t the strongest and most effective with just these folks. The others that have come and stayed (or come and moved on!) are what fill out the sound and allow us to add more depth and more life to service music. The band has evolved in the same way. Andres was involved in all of this before I came on board, but all the others have joined in the last 8 years. Our band, in case you didn’t know, is amazing, versatile and talented. I’m thankful for all of these folks.

But we need more. Summer, especially, is a time when I need you to step up and step in. Handbell Choir, Children’s Choir, and Chancel Choir are all on a break for the summer. We need to act as one body and fill our space with joyful or meditative sounds even though most of the ensembles are on hiatus. What can you contribute? You, after all, are a part of this. You participate in the service, you spend time in this beautiful space, and you have secret talents and musical interests that I may or may not know about!! Will you please reach out to me so that I can help you contribute to service one Sunday this summer? One Sunday. One song. One body. Now is the time to step up and step in.

Email me if you play an instrument, love to sing, or want me to work something up with your kids! [email protected]

There’s this wonderful little children’s book called Flat Stanley that I absolutely love. If you’re not familiar, the basic idea is that there’s this kid who accidentally gets flattened by a bulletin board that falls on him while he’s sleeping. It would be tragic except for the fact that Stanley makes the best of the situation and has loads of fun doing everything from catching art thieves while pretending to be a paint-ing at a museum to visiting his friends by traveling through the mail.

This summer, we’re asking you to take Flat Jesus with you wherever you travel. Snap a picture with Flat Jesus at Six Flags, at camp, at the beach, at the family reunion, wherever. When you’ve taken the picture, please send it to [email protected]. I’ll be collecting them and excited to share all the places Jesus has traveled with us as a congregation this summer.

As much as we know that Jesus is always with us, sometimes we need a reminder. So this is my way to help you insert some Flat Jesus into your summer. He’s easy to pack.

But Deaconess Claire, where will I find a copy of Flat Jesus to take with me?Right here:

It is truly fitting and just, right and helpful unto salvation that we should always and everywhere give thanks to you O Holy Lord, Father almighty and eternal God: who, with your only begotten Son and the Holy Spirit are one God, one Lord: not in the oneness of a single person, but in a Trinity of one substance. For that which we believe from your revelation concerning your glory, we acknowledge of your Son and the Holy Spirit without difference or distinction. Thus, in the confession of the true and eternal Godhead there is adored a distinctness of persons, a oneness in essence, and an equality in majesty, whom the angels and archangels, the Cherubim also and the Sera-phim, do not cease to daily cry out with one voice saying: Holy Holy, Holy….

Hunger doesn’t take a break during the summer and neither does The Friend-ship Center. We have seen a steady increase in our number of households served at the Lincoln Square Friendship Center (LSFC) and the North Park Friendship Center (NPFC) remains as busy as ever. Together these two loca-tions serve over 400 households a month!

In June we participated in the 29th Annual Hunger Walk at Soldier Field which is a 5k walk and fundraising event put on the Greater Chicago Food Deposito-ry. Over 13,000 people were expected to participate in the event and we had a great turn out for The Friendship Center. Thank you to those that attended. If you missed the event you can still help us reach our fundraising goal by donat-ing here before July 31st: http://www.chicagosfoodbank.org

If you have some extra time this summer take that time to get involved. I can promise you it will be a rewarding experience. Strangers become neighbors and neighbors become friends at The Friendship Center.

Upcoming Events: Square Roots Festival | Friday, July 11Thank you to everyone that signed up to volunteer! We have filled our slots on Friday evening. You can still volunteer on Saturday or Sunday to give us extra credit.

We are excited to host this special event for our neighbors: a continental breakfast complete with music by musicians from the Oistrach Symphony Orchestra. Can you help setup or clean up? Donate items for the breakfast?
