Our cover shows the moon rising over Gayton Thorpe; a dark night followed and then a new day dawned, filled with glorious Spring sun.
This is the Easter message.
Jesus was crucified and the world plunged into darkness - and yet.........
The hymn “In Christ Alone” tells the story ;
“There in the ground His body lay, Light of the World by Darkness slain,Then bursting forth in Glorious Day, Up from the grave He rose again.”
It is the most triumphant end to the greatest story ever told.
Easter then is a time for great celebration. Whatever you do, I hope it is glorious.

Easter Surprise!
"Why are you looking for your friend? He is not here."
He is not here? But he must be here. We saw him laid here with our own eyes two days ago, surely?
And so the most baffling, extraordinary and sensational story of all time began.
It is surprising - the Easter story - the arrest, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The Christian Church was born out of a surprise and continues, to some surprisingly, to this very day. It will continue surprising everyone long after you and I have gone.
Some stories never lose their power to captivate us. Children today enjoy many of the same stories that I loved as a child. As adults, we love to see familiar stories told in new ways, whether it's the latest reinterpretation of Romeo and Juliet, or the ancient story of Noah told on the big screen.
The Easter story possesses particular power. It is the most important moment in the whole story of the bible and therefore the most important celebration of the Christian year. It is a story about life and renewal.
This encounter at the empty tomb following the death, the loss of their friend, Jesus, changes the disciples lives forever and a scattered band of grief-stricken mourners suddenly becomes a movement that changed the world.
"He is not here!"
What a surprising thing to say. Two thousand years or so ago, some people went to a graveyard in Jerusalem. They were going to one of the tombs, just one among countless other similar tombs there: carved out of rock like little caves. According to their culture and tradition, they were going to anoint the body of their friend who had died and had been buried there a couple of days previously.
But as they approached the place, they saw that the huge stone that had been put across the mouth of the tomb had been moved, by persons unknown. And, even more surprising, they were met by someone who said this odd thing:
The Gayton Group of Parishes April 2015 | 05
Each of us experiences death and loss in some way – perhaps in the loss of a relationship, a job or a cherished dream. And each of us longs for the hope of resurrection, however impossible it may seem.
Two thousand years after the first Easter Sunday, God is still in the business of bringing life out of death and changing lives.
So this Easter, why not visit your nearest church. Join us, if you can. You will be pleasantly surprised. Not least because nowadays, we no longer say 'he is not here'. We are able to say with complete confidence:
"He is here! He is risen! His Spirit is with us! Alleluia!"
May God bless you and those you love this Easter and always.
Revd. Jane
Enhancing Gayton Churchyard
'Now that the builders have finished, where they have made a mess, seeding will be completed and the churchyard will be returned to its former self. Those bits the mower could never reach are being turned into a wildlife area. With proper management and signage we hope to enhance the beauty of the churchyard. We do not want it to look un-cared for and are starting work with the NCCS.
The Norfolk Churchyard Conservation Scheme was established in 1981 and is run by the Norfolk Wildlife Trust in collaboration with the Diocese of Norwich.' (NWT website)The biodiversity of churchyard wildlife, developed from ancient grassland sites, is of unique value where much meadowland has been cultivated & lost elsewhere. Churchyards have become the main refuge for many grasses, wildflowers, ferns, and lichens. Species frequently associated with churchyards include butterflies, moths and bees; amphibians and reptiles including slow-worms, lizards, frogs, toads and even snakes! There are a wide variety of birds, and small mammals such as voles, mice and hedgehogs. Gayton PCC, working in partnership with Norfolk Wildlife Trust, are drawing u former self.p plans to enhance Gayton churchyard for wildlife. This will initially involve leaving a 3 meter area along the main church wall uncut, initially, to assess the grasses & plants that are there. 3 unattended areas will be seeded with wildflower/grass seeds to encourage insects. Signs will be erected and an information sheet will be available in the church. It is anticipated that local groups will be encouraged to be involved with these plans and surveys as they develop and are suitably managed for the benefit of both wildlife and the community.

GRIMSTON MEDICAL CENTRE01485 600341
SORE THROATSore throats are often caused by viruses and usually settle within one to two weeks without the need for any medical treatment. White spots on the tonsils do not imply a need for antibiotics.
Paracetamol should be taken for pain. Follow the advice on the pack.
Salt gargles may be used to ease a sore throat in adults and children over 12. Dissolve two teaspoons of salt in half a glass of water, gargle and spit out. Repeat several times a day.
Please do not ask for antibiotics as refusal may offendMany people give reasons for asking for antibiotics to treat sore throats. “I'm going on holiday”, “I'm getting married” or “I've got exams” are commonly cited. Viruses are immune to such reasoning and antibiotics are no more likely to be effective on these occasions.
When to see the doctor· If a sore throat is so severe that you cannot drink· If hoarseness persists for more than six weeks· If a child who is ill refuses to drink· If you think that you (or your child) are seriously unwell

ASHWICKEN, LEZIATE & BAWSEY NEWS
Ashwicken Church of England Primary School

Nose Day on Friday 13 March and raised £120 by holding a Children's Talent Show!! Thirty acts took part and the children performed highly entertaining comedy sketches, dance and singing routines, hula hoop spinning, spoon renditions, martial arts demonstrations, musical instrument playing and poetry reading. There were many fantastic performances and the panel of pupil judges had an extremely hard decision selecting the winners from the amazing talent displayed!
Well done everyone.
Leziate WI
The February meeting opened with the singing of Jerusalem. Our speaker was Gill Southgate with her dog Jasmin. Gill has been totally blind since a car crash at the age of 18. She told us that she learned to read Braille in a rehab centre for 7 weeks and used a white stick, then went to a college in London to learn touch-typing. She was then put forward for a guide dog, which was put in a harness to be trained. It took 3 weeks and her guide dog, a black Labrador, was called Ruby. Ruby stayed with her for 11.5 years. During this time she started work at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and stayed there for an incredible 33 years. She now gives talks in the area. She has her fifth dog now, each one of course has to be trained. Gill is married and has 2 grown-up sons. The stories Gill told us made us laugh and we all felt proud to have met this lovely happy lady.
Myrtle Roberts gave the vote of thanks. Refreshments were served by Janet Jary and Heather Box. The competition of a safety tip was won by Betty Alpe, second Myrtle Roberts and third Jan Eason. Birthday lady was Ann Rainbird. Raffle winner was Mary Ryan. We also welcomed two visitors to the meeting. Wendy Twite

LEZIATE PARISH COUNCIL REPORT
The Parish Council met on Wednesday th11 March 2015.
Representatives of Anglian Water were present to give us an update on the main sewerage project for Ashwicken. It was reported that within the next two weeks the tankers will not be needed as the power has at last been switched on. The next phase will be for Church Lane. It was reported it was a statutory duty to offer this service to Church Lane. It was then asked why it would not be a statutory duty to supply this to Leziate which is part of the parish. John Lambert will come back about this. If residents have any further queries then it was suggested that they contact John Lambert on [email protected].
County Councillor Coke was present at the meeting and the council asked him about faster broadband for our parish. We have had reports that several businesses that operate from our parish need to know when we have higher speed and the information is not available or if it is it is conflicting depending on the source of information. Cllr Coke promised that we would know the exact position of this in two months' time.
The Parish Council was very concerned with the letter from NCC that plans to make the B1145 from the hospital to East Winch road a clearway. They feel that this could have a detrimental effect on our Parish and were concerned with the inaccuracies that appeared in NCC letter.
A copy of the silica sand review which forms part of the mineral framework had been received. It poses a lot of questions which need a lot of background information and calls for evidence. In the next stages there will be a call for site allocations and the Councillors felt very strongly developments on this should be monitored carefully.
thParish Council elections are on 7 May 2015 and nomination papers are available.
thLeziate Parish Council next meets on 8 April 2015, 7.30pm in the village hall, when it will discuss the provision of defibrillator in the parish and the silica sand review.
Lucy Hudson
Lucy Hudson, a resident of Brow of the Hill, Leziate, for over 50 years suddenly
ndbut peacefully passed away on 2 March. In previous years, Lucy belonged to the Leziate WI, and Gayton Evergreens, she was a member of the Village Hall Committee, a Dinner Lady at Ashwicken School, and delivered the parish magazine before I did. I believe she was also on the Parish Council years ago and she was a great supporter of village events.
Lucy was a special lady and Leziate will not be the same without her. She was a friend to all, especially the Twite family.
Rest in peace Lucy, now with Henry and baby Brian. She leaves her daughter, Heather, and son-in-law Bob.

GAYTON NEWS
Gayton Parish Council News
thMeeting held 9 March 2015
VAS sign
There were concerns raised by parishioners who attended the meeting regarding the siting of the pole which holds the VAS (Vehicle Activated Speed) sign on Lynn Road. There were concerns that the pole obscures the view of the road of the owners of the properties it would sit in front of as they pull onto the road in a. Cllr Verber had undertaken extensive studies to ascertain whether the pole would cause a significant obstruction and found that it would not. However, the Council agreed to contact NCC Highways to see if the pole could be located in front of the electricity pole on the same side of the road as the bus shelter to try to ensure that no one feels inconvenienced by the pole. It was acknowledged that NCC Highways would be best placed to decide the positioning of the pole given their expertise.
Dog fouling
The Council heard a complaint from a resident about persistent dog fouling in Birch Road and Back Street. It was acknowledged that the intervention of the Safer Neighbourhood Team and PCSO's was good a few months ago but that it seems the incidences of dog fouling are increasing again. The Council agreed to remind residents that there is up to a
£1000 fine for not clearing up after their dog and that residents can report specific individuals to the authorities who will take action.
Dangerous DrivingThe Council heard concerns about the persistent use of an off road motor bike being driven dangerously around the Parish. It was noted that this issue has been raised with the police and it was agreed that the Council also contacts them to ensure that it is being investigated.
Norfolk County Council's committee system of governanceThe Council acknowledged a request for comments on the County Councils transparency with regard to its decision making etc, however, the request was very vague and did not provide enough information from which comments could be made. Mr Beales agreed to draft a response to the County Council and point out the lack of information required.
Annual General Meeting of Jubilee HallMr Anota confirmed that he, Mr Savage and Mr Petch would be applying to become Trustees of the Jubilee Hall at the
stAGM which will be held on 31 March 2015 at 7.00pm.

thheld at 7.30pm on 13 April at Gayton Jubilee Hall.

Gayton Evergreens
thThe meeting of February 18 was most enjoyable, our speaker Charlotte Philcox gave a very interesting and humorous talk about all aspects of our gardening, with tales of Workers, Wellies and Wheelbarrows. A welcome cup of tea and homemade cake was then served, amongst lots of friendly chatter from members. The football tote was played and the two winners of £5 each were: Mrs Vera Rasberry and Mrs Ann Rasberry. After a good raffle was drawn the meeting closed.
The meeting for March is after the Magazine deadline so will be reported on next time. It will be a lunch of 'bangers & mash' which we are all looking forward to.
In April we will be going to the Princess Theatre in Hunstanton for an afternoon matinee performance called 'Singing for Victory'

Gayton Women's Institute
Our February meeting was cancelled due to the bad weather but fortunately the
speaker, Charlotte Paton, was able to re-schedule for a meeting at the end of the
month. Charlotte was an excellent, well researched speaker, her subject being “
King Rolfe of the Norfolk Poachers “. We found it a particularly interesting talk as
King Rolfe's patch was on our doorstep, namely Pentney and West Bilney. Charlotte
discovered, during her research, that she now lives in the house that once was his.thSeveral of us went to Walpole Cross Keys WI for their 65 birthday celebrations.
Everyone was asked to wear black and white, the tables were decorated in those
colours too. We were entertained by a magician after the lovely buffet. You will
notice that food comes into each of our reports!
Had you noticed that the WI was mentioned on Countryfile recently? In the
Weekend supplement of The Daily Mail they have devoted two weeks of the cookery
section to recipes from the old days...a fish cake recipe from 1926, boiled chocolate
cake from 1940 and Royal pudding from 1957, all this in celebration of our centenary
year!thFor our own 69 birthday meal, at a local venue, we decorated the tables with
Centenary roses, which are a rich shade of pink, and these were divided between
our two ladies who had a birthday in March.
Very recently a number of us attended the Nar Valley group meeting held in the
Swaffham Assembly rooms. Our speaker was Sue Cadman, from The Roly Polys,
remember them? Lots of laughs as she spoke of dirty digs in Blackpool and of being
propositioned by a gentleman in Glasgow, but she couldn't understand what he was
saying! Great fun.
I close with a shortbread recipe from 1919 do try it. You will need 7ozs plain flour, 1
3/4oz of caster sugar, 3 ½ oz cubed butter. In a bowl mix the ingredients together,
press the mix into a 6 ½ x 7” square tin and bake in a preheated oven 160 c, 140 fan
or gas 3. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes until pale golden, cut into fingers.

Gayton Jubilee Village Hall
This is the last time that I will writing the reports and notices for the Hall after almost nine years. Myself together with Mrs Eileen Madren and Mrs Ann Rasberry each in the roll of a Managing Trustee, have taken care of the running of the Hall.
This in part has been very rewarding as we have been able to procure funds from grants thanks to the Lottery, King's Lynn Borough Council and DEFRA.This has enabled us to update the Hall and make it warm and friendly with excellent facilities.
However it has also been hard, trying to keep Hall activities going and putting things on that sometimes have had little interest from the Village Folk, times change and so do peoples loyalties, when there is so much more on offer to interest them. It does seem however to be a favourite for children's birthday party's which is great.
There are still several regular group meetings held in the Hall which will always be welcome, and on behalf of all three of us I would like to thank them most sincerely for all their support. We hope that they will continue to support the new Managing Trustees. I also know that on behalf all three of us we are most grateful to our to the folk of Gayton and surrounding villages, who have attended the functions we have held, and have generally supported us all the way, thank you all very much.
We have also had the most amazing support from people who have helped with, Bingo, parties, catering for both happy and sad occasions, coffee mornings etc, and the up keep of the Hall keeping it in pristine condition. You know who you all are, thank you very much.
stThe AGM will be held as advertised before on March 31 at 7-30pm.

Learn, Laugh, Love and Be the Best that
you can Be!
Acorn Class The youngest class of Gayton Primary School have had a very busy Spring Term, yet they still managed to find the time to dress up for Comic Relief.
Our topic has been ‘Me and My World’ and we have been lucky enough to have several visitors come in to our class and help us with our learning. A dentist came to see us and showed us how to brush our teeth properly, it was very interesting and all the children had a turn at brushing the teeth of some unusual puppets.
We also had a visit from Mr Sheldrake who bought in some chicks that were only 1 day old. He let the children hold the chicks and told us how long it takes eggs to hatch and how to look after a chick that has no mum.
We met a police lady with a tortoise, a beetle scientist, a logistics manager, a RAF officer and a paper technologist. We heard all about their jobs and the children decided what they would like to do when they grow up. What a fantastic term!
We are very proud of all our athletes that took part in the County Sportshall
final and Area Hockey Festival

This is a poem credited to Canon F C Oakley, Rector of Necton from 1926 to 1945
NORFOLK
God drew a map of England We're slow of speech in Norfolk And planted hill and wood, (Perhaps a thought too slow)He looked on stream and headland And only when we're cornered, And saw that it was good. Will we answer 'yes or 'no'Pushed far into a corner Our fathers taught us caution,He left a fair domain – They learned with moil and painHeath, downland fen, and Broadland- that ever specious strangerRich pasturage and grain. Might be a reiving Dane
It's on the road to nowhere, The sturdy Norfolk YeomenTravellers pass it by; To guard their right are setNobody comes to Norfolk As well befits the childrenWithout a reason why. Of men who followed KettNobody sings of Norfolk But Norfolk men are loyalThough many bards they be Without deceit or sham-To honour glorious Devon Ask, if you are doubtfulOr Sussex-By-the Sea. The Squire of Sandringham
Then God made Norfolk County Devon may boast her sailorsHe said they'd love her well But Norfolk makes her claimWho, patient in their wooing, To lead all England's CountiesSurrendered to her spell. By right of Nelson's name.Slowly she charms – how slowly: And mark in France and FlandersBut once the spell is cast And far beyond the wavesBy Norfolk on her lovers. The thousand wooden crossesShe holds them to the last. Guarding our Norfolk graves.
Norfolk's stately lady- When God made Norfolk County She'll hold all aloof for years. He showed his perfect art;'Furriners' she despises- Within her proud fair bodyShe's scornful of the 'Sheers', He hid a golden heart. But they'll not find her fickle So come and live in NorfolkWho once her true love win, 'Bide 'til her spell is cast'From Brancaster to Thetford, Then once you've learned to love her,From Caister to King's Lynn. You'll love her to the last.

EAST WINCH NEWSwww.eastwinchandwestbilney.co.uk
East Winch Parish Council Meeting 2nd March 2015
Norfolk County Councillor Toby Coke spoke to the meeting and answered questions from the public on the A47 and other roads. He said that NCC had agreed that after 2020, the priorities would be firstly the Acle straight and then the A47 from Tilney to West Bilney. He thought that at that point a speed reduction and a crossing might well be considered. To help him to push for improvements, he would welcome information from the public, including notification of accidents and photographs.Re minor roads, the erosion of banks and the amount of mud on the road was mentioned, and the need to extend the 30 mph limit along the Ashwicken Road.
Cllr Cook also told the meetiing about the recent conference on new technologies for dealing with waste. NCC is considering plants serving small areas, to minimise traffic flow and different technologies for different wards. he said there had been 3 very interesting speakers whose proposals are being followed up.Mrs Steele outlined the requirements for Speedwatch volunteers. We would need a minimum of 6 people. So far no one had contacted her about it. Some councillors thought it would be more useful to invest in another speed sign which also recorded speeds at which traffic was going. Further information to be sought.
Mrs Steele has emailed the bus company asking for a bus stop in West Bilney. Mr Bland is now looking after the village seats as well as the bus shelter. There were complaints that the side of the trod was falling away in Gayton Rd, and that NCC hadn't installed extra posts in Station Rd as promised. Bushes cut back outside Wilson Drive hadn't been cleared properly. The volunteers who look after the existing speed sign were thanked for all their trouble.
Because the Village Hall is a polling station, it is necessary to change the date of the next meeting to either 11th or the 18th May.

GAYTON THORPE NEWS
New Service Reminder
Our next celtic service is on the 22nd March and we always have refreshments afterwards, for those who would like to stay and chat.
Easter service
We will be having our usual Easter Service with Easter Egg hunt on Saturday 4th April at 3pm. This will be a short child friendly service followed by an Easter Egg hunt outside for the children while the adults can enjoy cake and a cuppa! Come along and have some early Easter fun!
Annual PCC Meeting Reminder
We will be holding our annual church council meeting on the 9th April, at 7pm in the church at Gayton Thorpe.
This meeting is the one where we review the activities of the previous year including services, fundraising, the state of the church building, the church finances etc. We also review future and current plans.
We have decided to hold it in the church this year, so that anyone who is interested in how the church functions on a day to day basis can come along and listen to what goes on.
After the meeting we will have an "open forum" so that if anyone has any questions about what has been discussed at the meeting, or about the church generally they can voice them and hopefully have them answered!
There is a lot of misunderstanding about how the church runs and is funded and so it would be a good opportunity to share information and understanding with anyone who is interested.
Kings Lynn Male Voice Choir Needs You!!
We don't need soloists, just willing men who enjoy a tune and help promote the tradition of Male Voice in four part singing around the local community. We sing very often to raise funds for local and other charities. Why not join others in song and comradeship on a weekly basis.
Meet Tuesdays at Springwood High School from 7 till 9pm. For further info contact:Choir Secretary: John O'Connell on 01553 630441

QEH MATTERSYou are invited to come to a
thStroke Awareness event at the QEH on May 7 at 7.00pm.
This is being held in conjunction with the Stroke Association. There will be talks from professionals and information for carers. Car parking will be free on the bus stop car park, entry through the staff entrance and refreshments available. So if you are ready for a change from election news, do join us.
As well as barriers to separate pedestrians from the traffic, work has started to improve the access from the car park to the main entrance by levelling the path.By 2016 the QEH will have its own on-site wind turbine by the car park, powering the hospital with green electricity for the next 15 years. The Trust will not incur any cost to see the turbine up and running, with all construction and maintenance being covered by the developer, Ecotricity.
Governors are there to represent the interest of trust members and the public. If you have a matter you would like to raise with the governors you can always contact them at [email protected] or write to them via the Foundation Trust Office at
ndQEH.The next Governors' Council meeting is on Tuesday 2 April at 4.00pm; in the Conference room at the QEH. Members of the public are warmly welcomed. Please phone 01553 613142 if you wish to attend.

Nar Valley Ornithological Society (NarVOS)thTuesday 28 April 2015, 7.30pm at the Barn Theatre, Sacred Heart Convent School,
Swaffham. Access and parking from Sporle Road.
Please come along to this illustrated talk by Rick & Elis Simpson, entitled:
Wader QuestIn search of waders around the world
Many people are fascinated by wading birds but there is more to Wader Quest than looking at waders across the globe. Many waders are under threat and Wader Quest was formed in 2012 to raise money for and awareness of wader conservation. Rick and Elis are certain to demonstrate their passion for waders through this talk.
Visitors most welcome. Admission £2 on the night if you are not a NarVOS member. For more information about this meeting or NarVOS call Ian Black on 01760 724092.
Cley Marshes Nature Reserve 2015
Norfolk Wildlife Trust is opening a brand new education facility at Cley Marshes: the
Simon Aspinall Wildlife Education Centre. Our vision for the centre is to help visitors
explore, discover and be inspired by fantastic wildlife and wild places along the
North Norfolk coast. Visitors can enjoy new interactive interpretation and a striking
observation deck, with breath-taking views of the marshes.
The centre is named in memory of local naturalist, Simon Aspinall (1958- 2011), in
recognition of his contribution to ornithology and nature conservation. This project,
which included a land purchase and its conservation, was made possible thanks to a
Heritage Grant of £1.5million from the National Lottery through the Heritage Lottery
Fund and more than £900,000 donated by members of NWT, the public, businesses
and charitable trusts.
The Simon Aspinall Wildlife Education Centre at NWT Cley Marshes opens to
visitors 28 March, with events from 1 April and taster events planned for Easter
weekend. A full events programme is available at
