The Visitor A publication of Morningside Lutheran Church, Sioux City, Iowa Vol. 44-No. 1 January 8, 2013 The planning for the mission trip to Asia in December, 2012, actually began 13 years ago when I went with the United Nations to 6 different countries on the 'Mekong Project'. I had never planned to go back to Asia, but God had different plans. I had two days off during that time to go sight-seeing, so I went to Chiang Mai, met a mountain village man, and asked him to take me up to his village on the top of the mountain. God has been giving me crazy ideas ever since then. This trip was a little different from others we have taken. Other trips included sightseeing and projects, but this time we tried to establish relationships with 25,000 church people in Thailand. They are looking for an organization such as LCMC to be affiliated with. Laos is a communist country. It is on the list of the world's most persecuted nations. It is frequently mentioned in Voice of the Martyrs and talked about within human rights groups. This year we received authority from the Lao government to have Christianity recognized as a religion in Laos. Cambodia is a small country bordered by Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam. Primarily a Buddhist nation, its main languages are Khmer, French, and English. Mission agencies work among the 13 million citizens. Workers are sent to help in the orphanages, hospitals, and slums. We have a church on a floating village that began with digging a much-needed well for the community. Now there is an established church with 70% of the villagers claiming Christ as their Savior. The needs in Southeast Asia are so vast. We ate lunch in a mountain village in Laos where there is no Christian witness. That was one village on one mountain. Multiply that by the thousands of mountains and thousands of villages all over Southeast Asia. Mark Vander Tuig, LCMC Service Coordinator will join us for all worship services on January 20 and then at 1:30 in the gym Mark, the mission team, and myself will be showing slides from our trip and talking about our ministry there in the afternoon. Please come to see what God is doing in this part of the world. God Bless, Pastor Tom

The planning for the mission trip to Asia in December, 2012, actually began 13 years ago when I went with the United

Nations to 6 different countries on the 'Mekong Project'. I had never planned to go back to Asia, but God had different

plans. I had two days off during that time to go sight-seeing, so I went to Chiang Mai, met a mountain village man, and

asked him to take me up to his village on the top of the mountain. God has been giving me crazy ideas ever since then.

This trip was a little different from others we have taken. Other trips included sightseeing and projects, but this time we

tried to establish relationships with 25,000 church people in Thailand. They are looking for an organization such as

LCMC to be affiliated with.

Laos is a communist country. It is on the list of the world's most persecuted nations. It is frequently mentioned in Voice

of the Martyrs and talked about within human rights groups. This year we received authority from the Lao government

to have Christianity recognized as a religion in Laos.

Cambodia is a small country bordered by Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam. Primarily a Buddhist nation, its main languages

are Khmer, French, and English. Mission agencies work among the 13 million citizens. Workers are sent to help in the

orphanages, hospitals, and slums.

We have a church on a floating village that began with digging a much-needed well for the community. Now there is an

established church with 70% of the villagers claiming Christ as their Savior.

The needs in Southeast Asia are so vast. We ate lunch in a mountain village in Laos where there is no Christian witness.

That was one village on one mountain. Multiply that by the thousands of mountains and thousands of villages all over

Southeast Asia.

Mark Vander Tuig, LCMC Service Coordinator will join us for all worship services on January 20 and then at 1:30 in

the gym Mark, the mission team, and myself will be showing slides from our trip and talking about our ministry there in

the afternoon. Please come to see what God is doing in this part of the world.

God Bless, Pastor Tom

Dear MLC Family, We send our heartfelt gratefulness

each month and for our upcoming internship in Fiji. I am

always in awe of how the Lord has put you into our life

and how much you bless us. “Thank you” doesn’t seem

quite enough to express our thankful hearts, even more so

because you give without the spotlight. Thank you for

making this ministry possible. Thank you for loving and

remembering us. ~Jodi & Danae De Herrera~

Director of Music Ministries: Morningside Lutheran

Church is seeking a Spirit-Filled follower of Jesus to lead,

equip, and inspire the musical worship life of our

congregation. We currently have four, distinct, worship

services on Sunday morning with a broad range of musical

expressions from pipe organ and choirs to electric guitars

and drums. Each style expresses the rich diversity of our

congregation and we are eager to grow in our love for

Jesus as we worship Him with “Psalms, hymns, and spir-

itual songs.”

The ideal candidate must be passionate about their

Christian faith as well as being a talented musician and

vocalist. They must be a shepherd of musicians who

enjoys working collaboratively in directing the music

ministry of a large, multi-staff congregation.

From Gloria Sauck: In November I traveled with many

of the ELCK Central Diocese office staff to the Coast of

Kenya to visit some of the church work there and attend

the official opening of an orphanage where they would

like to see a dispensary built in the near future at Wema.

I have been working on getting the Kibera Springs of Life

Lutheran Dispensary up and running again. If we get

government permission I will work there one day per

week for a month or so to see patients until we can hire a

nurse. This will be good for me to keep up my Kenya

nursing practice license. Also, I have been writing up the

draft of the Health Department 5 year strategic plan for the

ELCK Central Diocese.

I will be traveling to Samburu to spend Christmas at

Arsim. My knee is healing well and I feel better about

walking and using it all the time. Stairs are getting easier!

Thank you for your prayer for and support of the Lutheran

work in Kenya. God’s blessings, Gloria Sauck

Jodi & Danae DeHerrera: I am so thankful to the Lord

for the opportunity to have attended the Foundation for

Counseling Ministry (FCM) school. It has been the great-

est most fulfilling course I have ever taken. I am so

excited about all this plus how now I feel better equipped

to come alongside others.

January 1, 2013, Danae & I will begin our day traveling to

Fiji to begin the next phase. We are so thrilled for this

opportunity to serve in the South Pacific and with a

wonderful team. Although this is ‘hands on” phase, it is

still a college level course. Aside from direct ministry, we

are required to complete field assignments, a book report,

case studies and prepare/teach counseling topics.
